Controller DATE: February 2004 TYPE: Modification Notice Fully Upgraded E5CN Temperature Controllers Available in April 04, Part Numbers Will Change Omron s popular 1/16 DIN sized E5CN temperature controller will feature significant upgrades, including improved functionality and user interface. The new parts will be available April The new E5CN is a direct replacement for existing models. However, the upgraded E5CN has new part numbers because they offer multi-sensor input instead of separate part numbers for thermocouple models and platinum resistance thermometer models. In addition, the new E5CN has added analog input models and long life relay output models. Please refer to Multi-Sensor Input Tables on the following page for details. The existing models will be discontinued at the end of June 04. Start switching customers to the new E5CN models starting April 04. Pricing, programming and connections are the same. Key Features of the Upgrade 1. Improved Display Existing E5CN New E5CN a) d) a. 11 segment LED display for easier alphabet character reading. 7seg 11seg b. Enlarged display area and character size c. 3 color programmable display Existing model has red and green display color programmable. New model has additional amber color. User can program amber to indicate lower limit alarm and red for higher alarm. d. Key icon is lit when key protection function is activated.

2 2. New Input/Output Variations Multi Sensor Input (E5CN- MT-500) Existing E5CN has separate models for thermocouple input (E5CN- MTC-500) and platinum resistance thermometer input (E5CN- MP-500). New E5CN has multi-sensor input and the 2 input models are unified to E5CN- MT-500 (multi-sensor input). Analog Input Models (E5CN- ML-500) Analog input models are used to control pressure, air flow or humidity. Applicable inputs are: 4 to 20mA, 0 to 20mA, 1 to 5VDC, 0 to 5VDC. Long Life Relay Output Models (E5CN-Y M -500) available in June 2004 The existing relay output model has a service life of 100,000 electrical operations. The new long life relay output model has a service life of 1,000,000 electrical operations. With a 10 times longer life, the controller requires less frequent maintenance to replace the relay. This is available for VAC versions of temperature and analog input models. 2

3 New Option Boards Expand the capabilities of E5CN to satisfy more applications with these option boards. 3-Phase Heater Burnout Alarm Pulse Voltage Output for OUT2 Both heating and cooling can have voltage output or OUT2 can be used as voltage alarm output. If a current output model is used, the OUT1 can be used as transfer output and OUT2 can be used as control voltage output. 3. Improved Software Faster control period of 0.5s min; existing model has 1s min. Faster sampling rate of 250ms; existing model has 500ms Improved tuning function; more stable PID parameter Improved loop break alarm; alarm sensitivity is adjustable Alarm delay timer 2-step simple programming function; programmable soaking time Tamperproof settings; parameter masking and password protect ModBus communication/high-speed 38,400 bps transmission to work closely with variable frequency drives and other process equipment 4. New Built-in Communication Port for Easy Programming New E5CN has a communication terminal built into the bottom of the housing. Communications with a PC can be done without an additional communication board. This eliminates the cost of ordering a separate option and simplifies installation. Simply connect a cable to the communication terminal and PC. Then, it is ready to set up temperature controllers with Thermo Tools, Omron s PC-based software tool for setup and monitoring. The software upgrade to support new E5CN models will be available in July Programming Method, Dimensions, Pin Allocation and List Price All Remain the Same The new E5CN model, full of improvements and new functions, directly replaces existing models. Omron continues to offer more value in upgraded features at the same price. 6.
