5 KENYA STANDARD KS : 2018 Health care wastes management commodities Part 4: Bins for health care wastes Specification 1 Scope This Part 4 of this Kenya National Workshop Agreement specifies the requirements and test methods for the Bins for health care wastes. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this Workshop Agreement, the folowing definitions shall apply: 2.1 health care waste commodity these are devices used to safegurd a person against hazards or injury during handling, segreggation, storing, transportation and disposal of the wastes that are produced in the day to day provision of health care. 2.2 bins for health care wastes these are temporary storage containers of health care wastes, coloured in accordance with the class of wastes to be kept in them, while awaiting removal and final disposal of the contents. 3 Requirements 3.1 Construction The bins rigidity, deformation resistance, tensile strength shall be in accordance to Table 1. Table 1 Physico-chemical properties of bins Sl no Physico-chemical property Requirement Test method i) Resistance to deformation, max. (mm) 2 % of original KS 1567 circumference ii) Gross capacity test No leakage Visual iii) Flexural strength, min. (N/mm 2 ) 400 KS ISO 1209 Parts 1 and 2 a iv) Tensile strength test, min. (N/mm 2 ). 12 N/mm 2 KS 1567 b a Rigid cellular plastics - Determination of flexural properties - Part 1: Basic bending test, Part 2: Determination of flexural strength and apparent flexural modulus of elasticity. b Rotational moulded polyethylene water storage tanks Specification. 6 KS : The design of the bin shall be tapered from bottom to top to allow easy evacuation of the contents. The tapering shall such that they easily nest in each other for ease of cleaning Bins shall be made of durable plastic material or poly-ethene, or any other suitable material Bins shall be stable when standing with a smooth inner side for easy cleaning Bins shall have handles of the same materials at the sides with tight fitting lids that are easy to open Bins shall be fitted with a pedal to operate the opening and closing mechanism of the lid. The pedals shall be of suitable material that can easily be disinfected Bins shall be made and categorized in three colours based on the classification of waste: a) Black bins for general waste whereby printing shall be in white and legible to read as noninfectious waste. b) Yellow bins shall be for infectious waste whereby the printing shall be in white and legible to read as infectious waste with a universal biohazard symbol on the sides c) Red bins shall be for highly infectious waste whereby the printing shall be in white to read Highly infectious waste with a universal biohazard symbol on the sides (see Figure 1). Figure 1 Biohazard symbol NOTE There should always be separate Bins for food remains which shall be of different colors apart from Black, Yellow and Red 3.2 Capacity The bin capacity shall be from 5 L to 50 L in multiples of five liters. Bins from 5 L to 35 L shall be pedalled, while those of capacity greater than 35 L shall be lid flipped in accordance to Figure 2. 2 KEBS 2018 All rights reserved
