1 ETAIL KILLS Level 2 Diploma in RETAIL SKILLS(QCF) Qualification Specification Overview This qualification is a competence qualification which been approved by Skillsmart Retail and focuses on the ability of learners to perform effectively at work demonstrating the skills required to be a competent member of the retail work team. 2 1 Purpose of qualification This qualification is a competence qualification which been approved by Skillsmart Retail and focuses on the ability of learners to perform effectively at work demonstrating the skills required to be a competent member of the retail work team. The qualification national occupational standards have been developed in consultation with awarding organisations, employers and training providers. What does this qualification cover? Units in this qualification cover all areas of working in the diverse areas of retailing, the knowledge and skills required to be able to work confidently and competently in the fast paced world of retailing. This qualification allows learners the opportunity to further develop practical job skills at work. Who is this qualification for? This qualification is for learners who: Potential new entrants into the retail sector who have little or no previous experience Learners considering moving into this industry, who also may have been employed for some time in a different sector Established employees undertaking a retail apprenticeship It is suitable fo learners aged: Who supports this qualification? Typical job roles include: Retail Sales Assistant, Customer Sales Advisor, Retail Supervisor, Merchandisor, Stock Room Assistant These qualifications may support the knowledge required towards some aspects of: Level 2 in Retail Knowledge Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship in Retailing Entry requirements Learners must be at least 16 years old. There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification. However, learners must have the potential to achieve all aspects of the qualification. In particular, learners should be able to demonstrate that they have the minimum levels of literacy and numeracy required to comply with the health and safety aspects of the scheme, the completion of the learning outcomes, and the assessments. How is the qualification achieved? This qualification is gained when all the necessary units have been achieved. The centre will then be able to apply for the learner s certificate. The learner will also receive a certificate of unit credit, listing all the units they have achieved. However, if they don t manage to complete the full qualification, learners can still claim a certificate of unit credit for the units achieved. Therefore, they still have proof of their ability and could complete the qualification at a later date. Units can also be taken individually (stand-alone). The qualification manual must be used in conjunction with the delivery and assessment of any individual units to ensure that assessment requirements and methodologies are consistently applied. 0 1 of 6

3 2 What will be assessed? How Workplace assessment of occupational competence is required. This must be carried out in line with the guidance available from the Training Services section of the People 1st website ( The guidance consists of: Assessment Principles; a booklet containing assessment guidance for each unit; and a list of some agreed equivalences between previous and current versions of units will it be assessed? Where appropriate, learners will be assessed in naturally occurring planned activities carrying out their work tasks. Assessment against the learning outcomes of the qualification may be through observation of performance. Performance evidence may be provided by the employer in partnership with the approved centre staff where established performance management processes are used by the employer to monitor staff performance. Structure To complete the Level 2 Diploma in Retail Skills, learners must achieve a minimum of 37 credits at least 22 of which must be at level 2. 8 credits must come from achievement of the mandatory unit in group M.
