1 Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Transportation SPECIFICATION FOR PLASTIC SIGNS January 25, SCOPE This specification covers folding plastic traffic signs and plaques for use within maintenance and construction work areas. 2. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS 2.1 Blanks shall be acryonitrite butadiene styrene (ABS) grade plastic, aluminum/plastic laminate, corrugated polypropylene, polyethylene blanks, or approved equal. They shall remain strong, semi-rigid and non-brittle, and shall not distort when exposed to any temperature between 0 F to 120 F for a period of at least 4 hours. 2.2 All plaques shall have a uniform thickness of 0.16 inch, and all signs shall have a uniform thickness as follows: Sign Size Thickness 24 x x 30 * x 36 * x x x 48 * 0.25 *square or octagon-shaped signs 2.3 The blank color shall be orange impregnated, in accordance with U.S. DOT, PR Color #6, dated March 1971, except any pre-production sample may be made from any color ABS plastic. 2.4 The face of all signs and plaques (both sides of duplex plaques) shall be covered with a Type III, VII, VIII or IX retroreflective sheeting material of a type that is a microprismatic material, and which is approved by the Department and listed in Publication 35 (Bulletin 15). All orange-colored signs and plaques shall use fluorescent orange sheeting material. (Bulletin 15 is on line at: ftp://ftp.dot.state.pa.us/public/pdf/bulletin_15.pdf).

2 2.5 Each sign shall have the word PENNDOT in 0.5 inch high legend screened on the sign face or applied as a permanent decal in lieu of or within 0.25 inch and parallel to the border on the lower right side of the sign. 2.6 The hinges, rivets, handles and sign blanks shall be in accordance with the attachment, except that handles may be made of rectangular 0.5 inch by inch aluminum stock providing the handle has similar dimensions and a 3-degree bend similar to the handle depicted in the Handle Detail. The part of the hinge on the face of the sign shall be the same color as the face of the sign would be at that specific position on the sign. 2.7 All sign faces shall be in accordance with the Department s Publication 236M or other Department sign standards. 2.8 All sign blanks with other than diamond-shaped sign faces, shall be oriented to have a vertical hinge. 2.9 All Work Area Speed Limit and Right Lane Closed Ahead signs, and their associated plaques, shall have two (5/16) inch diameter holes on the horizontal centerline of the plaque or message that is to be covered. The holes shall be located the following distances to the left and right of the vertical centerline: 3. PACKAGING (a) 24 x 36 Work Area Speed Limit Signs and 20 x 12 plaques 6 inches. (b) 36 x 54 Work Area Speed Limit Signs and 30 x 15 plaques 9 inches (c) 36 x 36 Right Lane Closed Ahead Signs and 33 x 6 plaques 10 inches (d) 48 x 48 Right Lane Closed Ahead Signs and 41 x 8 plaques 12.5 inches 3.1 Completely assembled signs shall be individually packaged in cardboard folders with paper separators between the folded sign faces. The sign message and size shall be legibly printed on the outside of the folder. Plaques shall be wrapped in paper with the message and size legibly printed on the outside of the paper, and 10 to 20 wrapped plaques within a cardboard folder with the message and size legibly printed on the outside of the folder. 3.2 The individually packaged signs and plaques shall be grouped by message and size and contained on wooden pallets. The pallets shall have a minimum distance of 19 inches between the skids and a minimum clearance of 4 inches from the base of the skid to the pallet platform. Merchandise shall be adequately banded to the pallet and shall not exceed 2,000 pounds in total weight. 4. CERTIFICATE OF APPROVAL -2-

3 4.1 The manufacturer of the sign face must have a Certificate of Approval to manufacture traffic signs issued by the Department prior to the bid opening date. 4.2 Any bidder interested in bidding who does not have a Certificate of Approval should contact: 5. This sample should be submitted between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on any scheduled workday to the Sign Distribution Center, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, 21st and Herr Streets, P. O. Box 10545, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, The Department reserves the right to reject any bid if the sample does not meet the requirements outlined in this specification.
