2 2. JOB PURPOSE To assist the Maintenance Team in the pursuit of maintenance of all vehicles in the Workshop. Dependant on the Divisional area this may involve a large amount of collection & delivery work to eliminate valuable operational time from this practice. 3. DIMENSIONS Assists with the process of workshop maintenance and its related efficiency for vehicles falling within the applicable Divisional area. ORGANISATIONAL POSITION See Organisation chart attached a) Driver/Handyperson reports to Maintenance Chargehand (supervisor) and is ultimately responsible to Fleet Maintenance Manager (1 per Division) b) Maintenance Craftsman and Maintenance Assistant report to the same line above c) No jobs directly report to the Driver/Handyperson Fleet Services Structure Fleet Maintenance Manager Workshop Administrator Maintenance Chargehand Maintenance Asst. 4 5. MAIN TASKS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 5.1 Collect and deliver vehicles from and to ambulance stations and workshops 5.2 Collect and deliver documents and other ambulance service materials in the course of delivery function 5.3 Assists other members of the workshop with labouring duties this will be more involved where a satellite workshop only has one technician. 5.4 Carries out workshop and vehicle cleaning duties, including the use of power washing machines & other industrial products. 5.5 Assists line manager(s) as required with risk assessment of tasks carried out and ensures that safe working practices are followed at all times in line with Service Policy and current legislation. Ensures that any accidents, near misses or hazards are reported immediately to line manager using the Health & Safety Accident & Incident Reporting Form, the Vehicle Accident Report Form and/or REPD Incident Report Form as appropriate Carries out any other reasonable and appropriate duties as may be required by the Fleet Maintenance Manager and Chargehand 5.7Induction Standards and Code of Conduct Your performance must comply with the Mandatory Induction Standards for Healthcare Support Workers in Scotland 2009; and with the Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers, both as amended from time to time, which are attached (further copies can be obtained on-line at: or from your Human Resources Department). Failure to adhere to the Standards or to comply with the Code may result in poor performance measures or disciplinary action and could lead to dismissal; or if you are self-employed, such failure will be deemed to be breach of an essential term of your contract, allowing us to terminate with or without notice. 6 EQUIPMENT AND MACHINERY Equipment and machinery includes: Power washing machine Being conversant with all the different types of vehicles in the fleet for driving purposes. Has to be conversant with all Workshop machinery in order to carry out cleaning and maintenance duties. Service communications equipment. 4

5 7. SYSTEMS Completion of vehicle log-sheets. Receiving goods and associated paperwork. 8 DECISIONS AND JUDGEMENTS Post holder will be required to travel to and from operational stations locate the appropriate vehicles and return to the workshop within a reasonable time. Where this becomes a problem must communicate with divisional supervisors in order to complete the task or advise the workshop of the problem. Where attached to a satellite workshop is expected to help the resident technician carry out routine maintenance tasks by removing wheels helping with heavy lifts and generally assisting in moving the vehicle through the workshop. 9 COMMUNICATIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS Communicates with colleagues, ambulance crew, managers, external suppliers and on occasion external customers. Is expected to work on his/her own initiative, when tasked by the relevant chargehand and carry out the main workshop tasks. 5

6 10. PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB Physical skills good driving and manual handling skills are essential, as they form a integral part of the role. Physical Effort manoeuvring/driving wide range of vehicles. Operating equipment. Working in cramped conditions, e.g. under vehicle and having to work on feet for the majority of the day. Sometimes working in dirty and unpleasant conditions. Other demands are manhandling items on the vehicle where lifting equipment cannot be engaged for practical reasons. Mental Demands good concentration required as Health & Safety risks could be severe if not following procedure. Workload will fluctuate meaning periods of high demand, occasional interruptions to attend breakdowns. Emotional demands minimal 11. MOST CHALLENGING/DIFFICULT PARTS OF THE JOB Dealing with the pressure of providing vehicles within an emergency service. Conflicting priorities between emergency vehicle work and providing good service to external customers (income generation). 12. KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO DO THE JOB Essential to be licensed to drive vehicles in class C1 + D1 13.
