1 WORLDSKILLS SINGAPORE 2016 TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE (Information for Competitors) Name and Description of Skills Category 1 The name of the skills category is Aircraft Maintenance. 2 Aircraft Maintenance competition covers inspecting, servicing, troubleshooting, removing, installing and repairing aircraft systems. Upon completion of their tasks, competitors must certify their maintenance carried out on the aeronautical product with the understanding that a licensed practitioner has the signing authority to release the aircraft for service. 3 The competition will require good skills and knowledge in airframe, engine and propeller which include the mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, avionic and electrical equipment in an aircraft. Scope of Competition 4 The Aircraft Maintenance competition consists of the demonstration and assessment of the following competencies: 4.1 Perform sheetmetal repair; Objective: To test the competitor s ability to interpret drawings, bend sheet metal with a high degree of accuracy, layout fastener and install solid rivets in accordance with the supplied drawings. Also, to form a hat section and channel and fit as required to make the assembly shown in the drawing in accordance with Standard Practices (AC 43 13) 4.2 Perform composite repair Objective: To test the competitor s ability to perform a composite repair on a laminate panel. The wet layup repair will require surface and material preparation, including bagging and curing with the use of hot bonders. All works to be carried out to comply with manufacturers specifications and Standard Practices (AC 43 13) 4.3 Rig a flight control; Objective: Test the competitor s ability to interpret drawings and graphs, including the ability to correctly set flight control cable tension with the ailerons centred (using a rigging pin). All flight control travels limits must also be set correctly and safely.

2 4.4 Perform daily inspection; Objective: To test the competitor s ability to perform a daily inspection on an aircraft or helicopter, thus determining whether or not the aircraft or helicopter is safe for flight or if further inspection is required as per the defect report & daily inspection checklist. All corresponding paperwork shall reflect the status of the completed daily inspection. 4.5 Remove and install component; Objective: To test the competitor s ability to remove and install a component in an aircraft or helicopter. 4.6 Inspect gas turbine using boroscope; Objective: To test the competitor s ability to use a boroscope to inspect and report defects found inside a gas turbine engine. 4.7 Troubleshoot electrical wiring defect Objective: To test the competitor s ability to troubleshoot faults in a wiring harness and correctly report any defects found. Duration 5 The project will be structured in modules and the time allocated for the project is 20 hours spread over 3 days. Practical Work 6 The competitor has to carry out the following tasks: 6.1 Perform sheetmetal repair as per supplied drawing; 6.2 Perform composite repair 6.3 Rigging flight controls as per supplied module; 6.4 Daily Inspection Visual Inspection of an aircraft prior to flight; 6.5 Removal and installation component; 6.6 Gas turbine hot section inspection; and 6.7 Troubleshooting an electrical wiring defect. 7 One week prior to the finals, the Shopmaster will facilitate a 1-day training/practice on the competition equipment. 8 During the familiarization session, technicians to be on site to assist in the orientation and answer questions from competitors related to machine functions and processes. This would help competitors with the use of the equipment and reduces the risk of injury and damage.

3 9 Competitors will be required to acknowledge and follow the safety instructions at Appendix I when working with tools and equipment involved in Aircraft Maintenance modules. Competitors are encouraged to view all incidents as preventable. Theoretical Knowledge 10 The theoretical knowledge required includes: 10.1 Proper use of reference manuals ie. AC Aircraft Standards Manual; 10.2 Following procedure as per instructions in Aircraft Maintenance Manuals Major Tools, Materials and Consumables 11 Equipment/Accessories 11.1 Sheet metal bending machine and sheet metal shearing machine; 11.2 Hot bonder; 11.3 Heat blanket; 11.4 Thermo coupler; 11.5 Sander; 11.6 Scissors for cutting fibre glass; 11.7 Composite panel; 11.8 Weighing machine; 11.9 Flight control rig; Aircraft or helicopter, with manuals; Engine turbine section, boroscope inspection equipment and accessories; Electrical wiring board setup and Boeing Standard Wiring Practices Manual. 12 Materials/Consumables 12.1 Aluminum sheet metal plate; 12.2 Rivets; 12.3 Fibreglass; 12.4 Adhesives; 12.5 Breather cloth; 12.6 Sealant tape; 12.7 Bagging film; 12.8 Vacuum cleaner; 12.9 Fasteners; Drill bits; Cotter pins;

4 12.12 Lock wire; Circuit board; Wires; Switches; Connectors; Terminals; Lamps; Heat shrink sleeves; Clamps; Ties; Tags. Marking Criteria 13 All Competitors are required to perform completely all the following modules within the maximum time allocated for each section : 13.1 Sheetmetal repair; 13.2 Composite repair; 13.2 Flight control rigging; 13.3 Daily inspection; 13.4 Component removal and installation; 13.5 Hot section inspection; and 13.6 Troubleshoot electrical wiring defect. 5 Appendix I Safety Regulations for Aircraft Maintenance The following safety instructions should be followed when working on equipment of Aircraft Maintenance Personal Protective Equipment: All competitors must wear personal protective equipment such as ear muffs, ear plugs, safety shoes (reinforced toe) and work specific clothing. All competitors must use safety glasses when using any hand, power or machine tools or equipment likely to cause or create chips or fragments that may injure the eyes. All competitors must use headlights when working with simulator. All competitors must use suitable gloves when using any hand, power or machine tools or equipment likely to cause injury to hands. Housekeeping: When working in your own competition area, make sure that no working material interferes with the adjacent competitor s area, and that your actions do not hinder his or her work. When shared machines are used, leave ample space for the person working on the machine. Floors and passages must be kept free of unnecessary clutter, wires and rubbish. Work areas must be cleaned at the end of each day.
