1 Prject Cde Shelf-life MILITARY MARKING (MIL-STD-129P) Marking permits ready identificatin f military supplies and equipment fr shipment and strage. Marking is required t assist ur dept persnnel srt shipments and pull stck t fill requisitins. Marking als aids ur custmers t identify items received. If an item has a discrepancy, it can be traced t the riginatr by the markings n the package, if the paperwrk is separated frm the item. Identificatin markings assist Dept persnnel t pinpint discrepant items and keep stck inspectins ecnmical by narrwing inspectin requests t a specific cntract number. References: Military Standard 129P, Standard Practice - Military Marking fr Shipment and Strage, prvides the requirements fr the unifrm marking f military supplies and equipment. This publicatin is apprved fr use by all Department and Agencies f the Department f Defense. ISO/IEC 16388, Autmatic Identificatin and Data Capture Techniques - Bar Cde Symblgy and Specificatins - Cde 39 (als called Cde 3 f 9) is suitable fr encding general-purpse alphanumeric data. References symblgy fr many industry standards. ISO/IEC 15438, Autmatic Identificatin and Data Capture Techniques Bar Cde Symblgy and Specificatins PDF 417 (Tw dimensinal frmat) ASTM D 996, Standard Terminlgy f Packaging and Distributin Envirnments, defined marking as "the applicatins f numbers, letters, labels, tags, symbls, r clrs t prvide identificatin and t expedite handling during shipment and strage". Minimum identificatin infrmatin required t be marked n all unit packs, intermediate cntainers and unpacked items.

2 MIL-STD 129 Markings Cnt The fllwing is the required marking in the rder listed: Natinal Stck Number (NSN). The NSN will include spaces r dashes and any prefix r suffix shwn in the cntract r requisitin. If n NSN is assigned, then this line may be mitted. CAGE Cde and Part Number (PN). The CAGE cde f the cmpany awarded the cntract fllwed by the part number specified in the cntract prefixed with PN r P/N. Item Descriptin r Nmenclature. The exact name and descriptin f an item as it appears in the cntract. Quantity and Unit f Issue. A nn-definitive unit f issue shall be accmpanied by a quantitative expressin. Cntract Number. Includes fur-digit delivery rder r call number, if applicable. Military Preservatin Methd and Date f Unit Preservatin. Example: "M41-4/02" - Use f the letter "M" in the first psitin indicates that the pack is a military preservatin methd; "41" is the methd number; "4/02" indicates the date f preservatin. If a military preservatin methd desn t apply (cmmercial packaging), the methd space will be left blank. Serial Number(s) (when assigned) Preceded by SER NO Bar Cde markings: NSN fr unit and intermediate packs NSN, Cntract r Purchase Order number and CAGE cde n exterir shipping cntainers Address Markings- (n shipping cntainers): Shipments that will enter the Defense Transprtatin System must use a military shipping label (MSL). The TCN, Ultimate Cnsignee DODAAC, and Piece Number must be bar cded in cde 39 linear bar cde frmat. The MSL will als include a 2D (PDF 417) symbl that will cntain shipment, line item and TCMD data. Cntractr riginated shipments that will nt enter the DTS shall have address markings applied as specified by the cgnizant activity. When nt therwise specified the fllwing address markings are recmmended:

Special Marking Fragile/ Delicate Methd 50 DOT (i.e. Hazardus Materials) Placement f markings n unit pack, and intermediate cntainers. Markings n unit packs, intermediate cntainers, and unpacked items shall be s lcated as t allw the markings t be easily read and t ensure that the markings will nt be destryed when the pack r cntainer is pened fr inspectin r until its cntents have been used. The marking surface shall be the utermst wrap, bag, r cntainer f the unit pack. When a barrier bag is used within anther unit cntainer, bth the bag and the utermst cntainer must be marked. Placement f markings n exterir cntainers. The identificatin markings shall be applied t the upper left tw-thirds f the side f the cntainer having the greatest verall, usable marking surface. Additinal identificatin markings that are required by the cntract shall be placed either belw these markings r in a cnspicuus lcatin n the identificatin-marked side f the cntainer. Additinal Labels that may be required: ESD sensitive devices Expedited Handling (999, NMCS) DOT (i.e. Hazard Class Labels) N matter hw well an item is made r packed, it may becme valueless if it cannt be identified upn reaching its destinatin.
