3 Unit Popcorn Kernal: Job Description Responsibilities Be a registered BSA volunteer with an address. Work with the unit committee, parents, and youth to develop a plan and budget for the year. Decide the sale period for your unit and make sure everyone knows about it. (Orders and money need turned in to you before they are turned in to the council). Have a Unit Popcorn Kick-off. Place a Show and Deliver Order so you have product to sell at store fronts and door to door. Encourage the Scouts throughout the sale. Plan to have your Scouts participate in Blitz Day. Collect orders from den / patrol leaders on the dates you have established for the unit. Submit orders via internet or drop it off at the council service center on time. Pick up your popcorn at the assigned appointment time at the distribution center. Make sure you have vehicles large enough to pick it up. A mid-size car holds 20 cases, a Jeep Cherokee holds 40 cases, and a mini-van will hold 60 cases. You will be required to sign a receipt at pick up. Remind youth of the due dates for money. Make sure all checks are made payable to the unit. Submit prize form by internet or bringing the form in to the prize order location by November 19. Turn in all money due to the council on time with ONE UNIT CHECK by December 16. Close up any loose ends and conduct a unit evaluation to discuss changes in the sale for the next year. 3

5 Support our Troops Program Customers will have the opportunity to support our military men and women and their families by providing a gift in the amount of $30 or $50. Your Scouts will be asking consumers to help "Support Our Troops" during the upcoming fall sale. Here is how the program words: 1. The Military Product Donation will be at a set Retail Price of $30 or $ Units will get the 30% profit 2. Consumers can put a check mark or list a quantity in the column shown to designate an order as a donation of $30 or $50 of Popcorn to the United States Military. 3. Units will tally their total Military Product Donations and all other products, then submit a total order to the Council. 4. Trail's End has forged a relationship with SupportOurTroops.org to handle all aspects of the Military Product Donation shipments. The new program is already being promoted at 5. The product mix for each Military Product Donation will be determined by Trail's End and will include a variety of Trail's End items. Show and Sell Option Available You will again be able to order popcorn early for a Show & Sell sale. This option allows your Scouts to deliver popcorn as you sell it. Here is how it works: Your unit places a preliminary order by September 23. You pick up your order on October 8 at Mattingly Foods in Zanesville. There is no money due until Friday, December 16! If you have leftover popcorn, roll it over to your traditional Take Order sale! Make sure you take into account all product you have not sold and calculate that in to your Take Order. After this point, if you still have extra product, it must be brought back to the Council Service Center on or before Saturday, November 19. NO PRODUCT WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THIS DATE. Remember that Show & Sell is a way to supplement your sale. It is not meant to replace your traditional Take Order sale. Give this a try! Just think how much fun your unit will have trying to figure out what to spend all that extra money on! 5

6 Popcorn Blitz Day Each year, Scouts across the country do their best to sell popcorn, earning money to fund all the different things a unit may do. Some units may pay for events like Boy Scout Summer Camp or Cub Adventure Camp, others pay for Boy s Life or a weekend outing with the unit. Regardless of what your unit may choose to do with the money, think of what extra fun you could have if the Scouts in your unit each sold an extra $100 dollars of popcorn in one day! Here is the Plan: In your packet, you should have special Blitz Day forms. We are all Scouts and trust that you will not hand these out until the Blitz Day, Saturday, November 5. Your Pack meets at a location of your choice (chartered organization, town square, local fast food place, etc) Before the meeting, have a map of your community and identify streets for the Scouts to hit Have orange juice, doughnuts, milk (coffee for the adults) Give the Scouts the street assignments and have them sell popcorn! Make sure the Scouts go back to the original meeting place to turn in their sales forms Bring these forms to one of the following locations between 3:00-4:00 pm Cambridge McDonald s 2351 East Wheeling Ave. Mount Vernon Tim Horton s 941 Coshocton Ave. Coshocton Tim Horton s 131 Chestnut St. Zanesville Tim Horton s 3231 Maple Ave. OR Make sure your forms are faxed or ed jeff.wickerham@scouting.org by 4:00 pm Now, for the Bonus Round: For every $100 that a unit sells on Blitz Day, you will receive a $10 gift certificate to the Muskingum Valley Council Scout Shop. For instance, if your unit sells $710, you will receive a $70 gift certificate to the Scout Shop. Imagine all the fun activities they can now do with the extra money! 6

17 8 Merit Badges POPCORN SALES HELP MEET MANY SCOUTING OBJECTIVES. More and more Scouting units utilize popcorn sales to raise funds for equipment, activities, and other needs. Just last year, units from more than 300 councils profited by selling Trail s End products. But, that s not all! BOYS MAY EARN MUCH MORE THAN MONEY. Few activities demonstrate to Scouts the value of planning, organization, and commitment more clearly than a unit s combined efforts in a popcorn sale. Scouts develop and practice new skills, learn about sales and marketing, and reach new levels of personal success. And, once again, Scouts who participate in the sale may accomplish requirements for achievements, activity badges, and merit badges because many of the activities involved in popcorn sales are similar to requirements for Scouting accomplishments. Consider the following popcorn activities as counting toward Boy Scout merit badges before proceeding with your work, make sure your merit badge counselor has approved your idea. ART For requirements 2, 5, & 6, produce an America s Popcorn Sale poster for local display, using pen and ink, watercolor, pencil, pastel, oil, tempera, acrylic paint, or marker. CINEMATOGRAPHY For requirements 1 & 2, create a storyboard for a video designed to show Cub Scouts how to sell Trail s End Popcorn. COMPUTERS For requirements 2, 3, 4, & 5, design a personal sales spreadsheet to keep track of your popcorn sales, prizes won, and money made for the troop. COMMUNICATIONS- For requirement 1, show your counselor how you would teach others to sell popcorn. Then play the roles of customer and Scout, practicing selling techniques. For requirement 2, make a popcorn sales presentation to your counselor. PLANT SCIENCE With council permission, use Trail s End educational materials to show how popcorn hybrids are grown and processed. (Requirements 8a & 8b corn option) ENTREPRENEURSHIP- With council permission, use your own management of the Trail s End Popcorn Sale to meet many of the requirements for this badge such as 3, 4b, 4d, & 6. PUBLIC SPEAKING For requirement 1, prepare and give a speech to a Cub Scout pack describing the benefits of popcorn sales to the troop. For requirement 2, prepare and give a speech to a Cub Scout pack describing the steps to a successful popcorn sale. GRAPHIC ARTS For requirements 2, 3, & 4, design a poster for use during the popcorn sale, and follow the various types described for ONE of the printing methods to produce copies of the poster. SALESMANSHIP With council permission, use the meetings, practices and procedures of the annual Trail s End Popcorn Sale to meet many, or all, of the requirements for this badge. JOURNALISM For requirements 2a or 2b, create a newspaper story or radio news announcement reporting on your troop s participation in the Trail s End Popcorn Sale. TRUCK TRANSPORTATION For requirement 10, describe what kind of truck would be needed to ship popcorn from the factory to your council, tell how the popcorn would be packed, estimate the time for the trip, and explain what would be the best way to unload the shipment. 17
