4 Change is gd and change is needed like nw fr me, ff t Wheatn By Christal Petersn UCF Frum clumnist University f Central Flrida I wish there was a way t knw yu re in the gd ld days befre yu ve actually left them. Frm the final episde f The Office televisin shw. Studies shw that the mst cmmn fears amng peple are the fear f heights, snakes, enclsed spaces, and being in a scial setting. But there s a fear even deeper than thse that mst peple dn t even realize until it hits them. And that is the fear f change. We ve all experienced that in sme frm. It s nt like changes in the weather r even changes t ur behavir. N, this change digs deeper because it is ne we can t stp even if we put ur ft dwn, hping that the frictin will smehw slw it dwn. N, the change I m talking abut is the change that ur life s phases bring, such as graduating r mving. N matter what yu d r dn t d, time is always ticking. It is certainly true that time waits fr n ne. T help yu understand mre f where I m cming frm, think back t a time that yu wuld classify as the gd ld days. It can be when yu were in schl, summer camp, rad trips, the times when yu and yur friends used t hang ut at yur favrite spt when yu were a kid. One f mine may be the times at UCF when my track and field teammates and I ften used water ballns t ambush the ftball players, wh lived in the same residence halls as us. Remember hw yu felt at yur gd ld days. Happy. Fun. Cntent. Excited. Yu name it. Nw tell me the exact day yu stpped ding thse things. Yu may nt be able t, because thse experiences ften just slwly faded away n their wn. In reference t the qute abve, a lt f time we find urselves cnnected t thse gd ld days thinking that this, the mment with friends, family r a significant ther will last frever. But usually it desn t. Eventually that party ends, yur friends evlve, and yu re left with the decisin f t be r nt t be ready fr what s next, n matter the situatin. I remember plenty f times when I wuld transitin t anther grade level I felt like the wrld was ending. What abut my friends? What was I suppsed t d nw? I can t grw up. It s t sn, I m nt ready. Take me back nw! I felt like I was the master f my wn time, s hw dare yu, time?! Putting an expiratin date n my gd times and frcing me t remember it just as that, a gd time. But that s the beauty f change, it frces yu t get ready whether yu like it r nt, because there s n time machine. S ging back t relive thse glry days is nnexistent. S instead we make a decisin t adjust t the changes happening t us, with resentment, f curse just t realize hw much we ve grwn r are grwing in the prcess. T this day, I still have mini fits when a friend starts a new jb and mves away r even when a traditin starts t cease t exist, because I knw that change is cming. And that is what is happening t me nw. My days as a UCF student have cncluded and I m mving t Massachusetts. I ll sn be wrking n an NCAA grant t start a student athlete welfare and develpment ffice at Wheatn Cllege. I m super excited abut what s t cme but definitely apprehensive abut all the change that is happening in my life. But as the philspher Shakur, better knwn as Tupac, nce said: That s just the way it is things will never be the same. S if yu re like me, even if yu have t remind yurself, just knw that change is gd and change is needed. The treatment can address islated fat almst anywhere n the bdy, including the abdmen, flanks r lve handles, inner and uter thighs, the lwer back, upper arms and submental fat, als knwn as the duble chin. While ClSculpting has always ffered dramatic results fr patients, the latest versin f the technlgy available at Clevens Face and Bdy Specialists is even mre effective and streamlined, he said. Mstly this is carried n in the states, with Republicans ften favring limits n access t the plls, and Demcrats usually hping t expand access. The chief argument fr mves t restrict access fcuses n ballt integrity: prtecting against fraud. We knw that fraud happens: a vter shwing up at the plls pretending t be smene else, r nn citizens trying t vte. But this is rare. After lking ver 1,800 files cllected by President Trump s nw defunct Vter Integrity Cmmissin, Maine s secretary f state wrte, the Cmmissin dcuments made available t me d nt cntain evidence EDGE new ad ed f widespread vter fraud. Indeed the sectins n evidence f vter fraud are glaringly empty. Mre pintedly, a few years ag Judge Richard Psner, a widely respected Republican appintee t a federal appeals curt, raised eyebrws when he declared that he d been wrng in 2007 when he d vted t uphld an Indiana law strengthening vter ID requirements. That law, he wrte, is f a type nw widely regarded as a means f vter suppressin rather than f fraud preventin. Of curse, yu dn t need vter ID laws t make it harder t vte. Yu can cut the hurs when the plls are pen. Yu can reduce the number f vting places. Yu can cut funding fr effrts t encurage vting r help vters get t the plls. Yu can make vting itself difficult by limiting the number f bths, fr example, s that lng lines frm. Yu can excessively purge the vter rlls. Creative minds have cme up with all kinds f devices t make it mre difficult t vte. I dn t mean t dismiss the idea that we need t prtect the integrity f the ballt and ensure that peple wh vte are entitled t d s. We d. But I believe representative demcracy is strengthened by expanded vting thrugh Can yu mve writing in burst dwn a little s it is nt hitting the tp brder f the burst thanks Nw Under Cnstructin Occupancy January 1, 2019 public marketing campaigns, registratin drives and even autmatic registratin when yu get a driver s license, thrugh lnger hurs, early vting r vting by mail. Vting is ur mst basic right as a citizen. It s hw we make urselves heard and felt. Our elected representatives respnd t what vters cnsider the mst imprtant issues and hw t decide them. Our whle plitical system depends n it, and erdes if vting turnut falls. S, the impact f vting is huge. The results that flw frm vting in a representative demcracy can determine the availability f guns, which health care prpsals mve frward, the quality f gvernance yu have, the ecnmic plicies that shape yur life. Ask yurself why it is that the federal gvernment spends a lt mre mney n prgrams fr lder peple than fr yung peple. Is it because lder peple are simply mre deserving f public spending? Of curse nt. The reasn is that pliticians knw lder peple vte at far higher rates than yunger peple d. The laws reflect members f Cngress sensitivity t that simple fact. As a plitician, I kept track f the reasns peple gave me fr nt vting. Often it was just plain apathy, incnvenience, r a sense f pwerlessness. Transprtatin culd be bad. Older peple were intimidated by the hpla that surrunds the vting place, what with pliticians ut there shaking hands and peple carrying signs. As a result, I understd their reasns fr nt vting, and culd wrk t crrect their legitimate cncerns and make ur demcracy strnger. We need t d everything we can t lift vter turnut, nt suppress it. 10 Cming changes may put clleges in United States in adapt r perish situatin, says educatin cnsultant By Ashley Pntius apntius@newsandexperts.cm News & Experts When businesswners investigate the future and see big changes cming that will impact their revenue stream, they adapt new strategies, r their businesses die. Higher educatin in the United States nw faces that same challenge as enrllments f the traditinal 18 t 23 year ld students cntinue t decline. Higher educatin is headed fr a majr sea change and the nly clleges and universities that will survive will be thse that adapt aggressive strategies t address thse changes nw, says Andrew Simn, a partner in Simn Assciate Management Cnsultants ( The higher educatin mdel f the last 50 years is abut t becme bslete. Simn, wh has perfrmed strategic wrk fr higher learning institutins, says ne f the majr reasns fr the cming realignment is the discnnect between schls and wrkplaces. Arnld Financial 8/13/18 page 6 Artemis 8/13/18 5/22/17 page 14 8 Clleges seem t have a built in bias against the needs f industry, says Simn. The cllege administratins and faculty f many institutins f higher learning appear t have a reluctance t understand what their students will need t succeed after they leave the university. Emplyers say that sending students ut with the technical skills is nt enugh. Students entering the wrkfrce need peple skills. They need t cmmunicate, crdinate, cllabrate and creatively slve prblems, says Simn. The demgraphics amng traditinal cllege age students suggest that the demand fr higher educatin has peaked. The next generatin will have fewer cllege students, Simn says, and thse that d g t cllege will encunter escalating expenses. Cnsequently, they are ging t pay mre attentin t their return n investment. Wrk r career readiness will be key. Simn ntes that these are the changes that the clleges f the future are ging t have t face: l Adult learners will be the new key t survival. The need fr lifelng learning will cntinue t increase while there will be a drp in the number f traditinal students wh enter cllege right after high schl. Adult learners will need new (peple) skills and new rganizatinal mdels. l Wmen are utnumbering men. This trend will cntinue int the future. l There will be mre Latins and African Americans attending cllege. l Sacred nrms will be challenged. Traditinal clleges are ging t have t re examine their business mdel, their tenured faculty, their dependence n adjuncts, and the rle f classrms as the preferred methd f delivery. Other lng held traditinal beliefs will als be challenged. l Future students will examine mre clsely return n investment (ROI). As the csts f higher educatin cntinue t rise, the ROI may nt justify the expense unless smething dramatic begins t transfrm that cllege experience, s it becmes mre relevant fr the needs f the wrkplace. In rder t survive, Simn says, institutins f higher learning are ging t have t becme mre integrated with emplyers because students will be mre mtivated t get an educatin that helps them be thrughly prepared fr their career. 13 Office space inventry tightens in cunty as businesses add jbs and expand n strength f ecnmy; cmmercial firm Team LBR at center f strng activity By Ken Datzman Office space inventry in Brevard Cunty is fast shrinking as existing businesses expand amid a strng wave f hiring, new cmpanies lcate here, and startups chart their curse. One f the best ways t gauge the strength f the ecnmy in a cmmunity is by the availability f ffice space. During the Great Recessin, which started in 2007 and seemed t linger frever, space was plentiful. Tday s market envirnment is the ppsite. When times are gd, businesses bring n new staff. Mre peple n staff generally means mre space will be ccupied. And many businesses in the regin have been in a hiring mde fr at least the last tw years, frm big brand glbal technlgy cmpanies t family wned enterprises. Brevard Cunty is experiencing what we believe is an all time lw vacancy rate fr ffice space. It s sub 6 percent right nw, said Rbert Rb Beckner, an ffice specialist and a principal at Lightle Beckner Rbisn Inc., a Melburne based full service cmmercial real estate firm that des everything frm leasing space t managing prperties fr clients. With ffice space inventry tight in the cunty, we are having t be very creative. A great example f that is what we are nw ding at the 119,000 square ft Gateway Business Center in Melburne (which abut 18 mnths ag came under new lcal wnership and was abut 35 percent ccupied at the time). Beckner added, In the last year, we have clsed eight deals ranging frm 2,500 square feet up t 12,500 square feet at the Gateway Business Center. We have brught it up t abut 70 percent ccupancy. It s an attractive ffice and flexible space cmplex, and that seems t be the type f prduct that a lt f businesses and rganizatins are lking fr right nw. Anther ht market fr ffice space is Viera, he said. We are seeing a lt f peple wh want t have a Viera address. S, at the Wickham Cmmns Office Park, where The Viera C. is lcated, we tk a 6,000 square ft building and subdivided the space int increments f 2,000 square feet r less. In ur marketplace, spaces that range frm 1,500 t 2,000 square feet lease quickly. There seems t be a big demand fr thse sized spaces. Wickham Cmmns Office Park features six buildings ttaling 79,085 square feet. It s lcated at Murrell Rad, Cabt Curt, and Devereaux Drive in BBN pht Adrienne B. Rth Lightle Beckner Rbisn, a lngtime full service cmmercial real estate firm headquartered in Melburne with an ffice in Titusville, is n track t pst a recrd year. These cmpanies are lking at Class A ffice prperties. They are digesting ur market fr pprtunity and wuld prvide supprt services t cmpanies like Nrthrp Grumman and private space ventures and s frth. I think we are ging t see significant business grwth in this cunty in the years ahead. The wrld s eyes are pening up t the attractiveness f the Space Cast. It s been a very exciting year, he said. The gains in every aspect f the cmmercial sectr in Brevard Cunty are a sign f the verall strength f the ecnmy and seem t bde well fr the future. Cmpanies such as Lightle Beckner Rbisn are grwing alngside the cunty, prviding cmmercial real estate services t businesses and rganizatins. Activity fr ur firm cntinues at a recrd setting pace, said Brian Lightle, brker and cmpany president. We hsted ur cmpany frum in February and talked abut the market, made bservatins, and prvided a frecast fr the year. 14 African Wax Prints featured in new Ruth Funk Center exhibitin; tells hw fabrics reflect stries f wearers The exhibit Wandering Spirit: African Wax Prints will pen Sept. 1 at Flrida Institute f Technlgy s Ruth Funk Center fr Textile Arts. It is a tribute t the century ld handmade designs and patterns n textiles that riginated in Indnesia and were cpied and industrialized by Eurpeans and exprted t West Africa. The histry f the African wax print is a histry paved alng clnial trade rutes and glbalizatin in the pst clnial era. Thugh nt riginally African, these textiles have becme ingrained in many regins f African culture and sciety. Wandering Spirit traces the develpmental pathway f the African wax print and tells hw these fabrics reflect the stries, dreams, and persnalities f the peple wh wear them. Maybe better knwn by its Javanese descriptin batik, the handiwrk n display is based n a traditinal technique f wax resistant dyeing in which a pattern is made n bth sides f cttn fabric with warm liquid wax applied by a small, brass cup with a sput knwn as a tjanting. After the wax cls and slidifies, the clth is dyed with a primary clr and the wax is remved, revealing the pattern where the wax had nce been. J.B.T. Prévinaire, a Dutch cttn printing mill wner, was instrumental in develping a machine that culd print imitatin batiks. Despite the technlgical advance, La Javanaise prduced imperfectins in the print that did nt appeal t the Javanese buying public, s the Eurpean printers fund themselves lking fr new markets arund the wrld. After many years f transcntinental explratry travels and investigatins, they identified Africa as the new ptential market fr their wax prints. The success f the wax prints n the African scene is driven by many factrs, such as the culture, taste and desires f African cnsumers. Clthing in Africa serves an imprtant means f cmmunicatin, sending hidden messages and retelling lcal prverbs. Clthing als depicts a persn s scial status and psitin, plitical cnvictins, ambitin, marital status, ethnicity, age, sex and grup affiliatins. Wandering Spirit: African Wax Prints is curated by Gifty Bensn, Ph.D., adjunct prfessr at Rgers State University, and rganized by ExhibitsUSA/Mid America Arts Alliance, Kansas City, M. A supplemental exhibitin, als curated by Bensn, is rganized by The African Hspitals Fundatin, Tulsa, Okla. Select prgramming is made pssible by a grant frm the Cmmunity Fundatin fr Brevard. At 1:30 p.m. n Sept 1., Bensn will lead a free gallery tur f the exhibitin. A cllectr f African wax prints and textiles, she will lead a talk that highlights stries assciated with each bject and the detailed meaning f their patterns and designs in West African culture. The event is free and pen t the public. Als n Sept. 1, the Ruth Funk Center, in partnership with Think Humanity, a nnprfit charity whse effrts supprt refugee cmmunities in Africa, will ffer a retail space with gds handmade by ppulatins in Uganda. Sales prceeds will supprt and fster educatin within these displaced cmmunities. Wandering Spirit runs thrugh Dec. 15. 15 New Flrida Citrus Prductin Guide helps keep grwers prductive despite present threat f HLB By Tm Nrdlie tnrdlie@ufl.edu UF/IFAS Cmmunicatins University f Flrida GAINESVILLE Flrida citrus grwers nw have an updated resurce t help them keep grves prductive despite the ever present threat f Huanglngbing, the bacterial malady als knwn as HLB r citrus greening disease. Experts with the University f Flrida Institute f Fd and Agricultural Sciences have just cmpleted a 180 page technical handbk, Flrida Citrus Prductin Guide It was debuted at the 2018 Citrus Exp in Nrth Frt Myers Aug The guide cvers all aspects f grve establishment and management in Flrida s current grwing envirnment, said editrial team member Lauren Diepenbrck, an assistant prfessr f entmlgy with the UF/IFAS Citrus Research and Educatin Center in Lake Alfred. HLB has impsed many changes n citrus prductin, and ur gal was t gather all f the mst imprtant current infrmatin int ne place, said Diepenbrck, ne f three editrs wh crdinated the effrts f 42 cntributing authrs wh wrte, revised and updated material fr the guide. In additin t sectins n grve establishment, nutritin, irrigatin, pests and diseases, the guide features tw new chapters this year, cncerning cld prtectin and the Citrus Under Prtective Screen system used t grw high value fruit fr the fresh market. Diepenbrck ntes that the guide als cvers the new federally mandated Wrker Prtectin Standards, which tk full effect in January Emplyers need t make sure they re in cmpliance, s we included material n that tpic, she said. The current guide evlved frm a smaller handbk devted t citrus pest management, which was prepared by UF/IFAS entmlgists and had been in prductin since at least the early 1980s. Revised editins f the pest management guide were issued annually, and assisted grwers in cping with Diaprepes citrus weevil, citrus rust mite and many ther challenges. With the emergence f the HLB crisis, it became clear that grwers needed an expanded resurce cvering all factrs relevant t successful citrus prductin when the HLB pathgen is fund statewide and virtually all cmmercial grves cntain infected trees. Respnding t this need, last year s prject team rlled ut a mre cmprehensive handbk that included sectins devted t hrticulture, plant pathlgy and sil and water science, she said. This year, we nt nly updated the material, we jined frces with a new publisher, Meister Media, Diepenbrck said. They were respnsible fr securing spnsrs and printing the physical cpies f the guide. The editrial team hpes t receive feedback frm grwers abut the new editin s that they can make imprvements fr the guide, expected next summer. We cnsider the guide t be a wrk in prgress, Diepenbrck said. One questin I ve been asking myself is, hw we can make the guide mre engaging and accessible? I m hping that grwers will have sme suggestins in that vein. Besides Diepenbrck, the editrial team included tw f her clleagues at the Citrus REC: Megan Dewdney, a plant pathlgy assciate prfessr, and Tripti Vashisth, a hrticultural sciences assistant prfessr. The cntributing writers included citrus experts with the Citrus REC, the UF/IFAS Indian River Research and Educatin Center and Suthwest Flrida Research and Educatin Center, the UF main campus and the Flrida Department f Citrus. A digital editin f the guide is available free f charge at Viera High student Sid Ranganath n a missin t help thers excel in schl VIERA Siddarth Ranganath, better knwn t fellw students as Sid, is nt yur typical teenager. This rising junir at Viera High Schl is a prblem slver, and passinate abut finding ways t help ther kids excel in schl. This summer, Sid decided he wanted t raise mney t prvide schl supplies fr children in Brevard Cunty wh may nt have access t them therwise. He had an ambitius gal and ended up raising $1,500 and cllected fur bxes f physical supplies and presented bth t The Supply Zne, a service f Brevard Schls Fundatin which puts schl supplies directly int the hands f children in need. When asked abut why he chse t take n this task, he said, I decided t wrk with the Brevard Schls Fundatin because ur missins cincide. I want t help students wh are unable t pay attentin and participate in class because f nt having supplies. Fr them nt t have them just because f a lack f resurces is just unacceptable t me. I feel lik e these kids need a chance just like anyne else. Mike Alba, the principal at Viera High Schl wh was n hand fr the check presentatin, said, It makes me feel prud when I see an individual student wh thinks beynd themselves. We re trying t create students that can achiev e academic success, but als find ways t help their schl and cmmunity and Sid is an excellent example f that. I m prud f him fr taking a risk and I hpe ther students wuld lk at him as an example. It is always such an incredible gift t witness yung peple wh have a passin fr helping thers said Janic e Kershaw, president and CEO f Brevard Schls Fundatin. Sid s genersity in helping thers is truly inspiring. The mney he raised is able t be matched by the educatin fundatin matching grant prgram thrugh ur legislature an d it will g t helping students in need all acrss Brevard Cunty. In additin t finding resurces fr the Supply Zne, Sid als develped a new cncept t help his fellw students. He nticed that sme f his peers were struggling with science and math cncepts and were falling behind. He decided t us e his time tutring at a lcal library and created Math with Sid inviting students wh needed extra help t jin him. It was during these tutring sessins that he realized transprtatin was an issue fr sme f the kids wh wanted t attend but were unable t. Using his knack fr finding slutins, he develped STEMHelps.rg, a free tutring website with vides and cntent taught by Sid, in rder t give greater access and help thers t imprve their grades and understanding f cmplex material. He is hping t engage mre f his peers t cntinue building this resurce. It s always abut what is best fr the patient. Befre practicing in Brevard Cunty, Dr. Eldaif was an attending staff physician at the Cleveland Clinic in Suth Flrida, and the clinical directr f rbtic surgery at Excela Health System in greater Pittsburgh. He earned his undergraduate degree frm Emry University and then went n t graduate frm Duke University Schl f Medicine. Dr. Eldaif als did his urlgic surgical training at Duke, and cmpleted a Fellwship in neur urlgy research and advanced laparscpic and rbtic assisted surgeries. Dr. Eldaif hlds privileges at Health First s Viera Hspital and Rckledge Reginal Medical Center. He has extensive experience in rbtic surgery. Dr. Eldaif perfrms davinci rbtic surgeries treating prstate cancer and kidney cancer, as well as recnstructive surgeries fr strictures r injuries f the ureter, kidney, r bladder. I wrked with the varius davinci mdels thrughut my residency at Duke and in my early career at the Cleveland Clinic. I trained n the first tw generatins f the davinci, and then in my prfessinal practice, after finishing my Fellwship, I wrked with the davinci S mdel. Recently, I have used the Si and the Xi mdels. The Xi is a beauty t wrk with. The davinci surgical systems, develped and manufactured by Intuitive Surgical Inc. f Sunnyvale, Calif., are designed t help surgens perfrm minimally invasive surgery. The systems ffer surgens like Dr. Eldaif high definitin, three dimensinal visin, a magnified view, and rbtic and cmputer assistance. They use specialized instrumentatin, including a miniaturized surgical camera and wristed instruments (such as scissrs, scalpels, and frceps) that are designed t help with precisin dissectin and recnstructin deep inside the bdy, he said. The Xi system is intended t be a technlgical leap. Intuitive Surgical designed the system t ptimize ease f use. Fr example, Xi can help simplify prcedures requiring access t multiple areas f the pelvis, abdmen, r chest. Fr mre than a decade, davinci surgical systems have enabled surgens t ffer a minimally invasive alternative t pen surgery. Dr. Eldaif said the benefits f rbtic surgery include shrter hspitalizatin, reduced pain and discmfrt, a faster recvery time and return t nrmal activities, small incisins which result in reduced risk f infectin, reduced bld lss and transfusins, and minimal scarring. I think mst patients have a general understanding f the cncept f rbtic surgery. They may nt knw exactly hw things are dne, like taking ut a gallbladder r prstate r uterus, but verall they have embraced this technlgy. What we nw have as surgens are mre tls t use that make surgery mre effective with better utcmes, he said. One f thse new tls fr rbtic surgery is a technlgy called Firefly, which the davinci system features. Fr surgens, Firefly is like wearing night gggles. In general, Firefly uses a dye that highlights the difference between cancerus tissue and healthy tissue, said Dr. Eldaif, thus enhancing the surgen s ability t capture all f the cancerus tissue mre precisely while aviding remving healthy tissue. 21 Lightle Beckner Rbisn Inc. Cntinued frm page 13 Lking ahead t next year and beynd, Lightle said he is very ptimistic abut Brevard s cmmercial real estate market. Barring an unfreseen wrld event, I dn t see any reasn fr a slwdwn in the near future. Interest rates are rising slwer than what sme peple perhaps had anticipated. That s gd news. We d see cnstructin csts rising. But all f the quality jb grwth in this cunty is ging t make Brevard unique, I believe, as cmpared t the rest f the state and as cmpared t mst f the cuntry. Jb grwth builds an area. Grwing cmpanies dn t drain yur infrastructure, they help pay fr yur infrastructure. We think Brevard is well psitined fr the next cuple f years. The lcal cmmercial real estate market is s buyant these days that the wrd spec has re entered the industry s ling after a lng absence. There is sme speculative retail building ging n in the cunty and that is smething we haven t seen in the past seven r eight years in Brevard, said Jeffrey Jeff Rbisn, a principal and retail specialist at Team LBR. He added that retail and hspitality demand cntinue t grw alng the Interstate 95 and Palm Bay Rad crridrs and in Viera. We re seeing higher than usual demand in thse areas. An example is the new $30 millin Palm Bay Executive Park, which will feature a Hyatt Place Htel, a Hme2 Suites by Hiltn, tw restaurants, and three retail buildings. The U shaped 10 acre parcel is next t Bass Pr Shps and Space Cast Harley Davidsn, just ff f Palm Bay Rad. There are htel prjects literally frm the suthern part f the cunty t the nrthern part f the cunty, said Rbisn. The develper f Palm Bay Executive Park is AD1 Glbal Hspitality. The cmpany is headquartered in Hllywd, Fla. The prject s general cntractr is Certified General Cntractrs in Melburne. Cnstructin is underway at Palm Bay Executive Park. Rbisn said he is seeing upbeat activity cuntywide. A specific example f the market s strength can be seen in the leasing at a Winn Dixie anchred center in Titusville. Fr six years r lnger, the center was arund 40 t 50 percent ccupied. Our retail team is leasing that prperty and we are nearing 85 percent ccupancy. That has ccurred in the last 12 mnths. This is an example f what we re seeing thrughut Brevard Cunty. His cmpany recently pened an ffice in Titusville. It s led by Hlly Carver, a sales and leasing assciate wh is a lngtime Titusville resident. Hlly is running ur Nrth Brevard peratins and she is ding a fantastic jb, said Lightle. Hlly is very bullish n Nrth Brevard, especially Titusville, added Rbisn. She knws the nrth part f the cunty prbably better than anybdy I ve met in this business. Hlly is unequivcally a Titusville expert. She is an incredible asset t Team LBR. In Melburne, the recently vacated sizable Tys R Us facility n West New Haven Avenue is sure t see a lt f interest. That cmpany liquidated. There are peple clamring fr that asset. It s nt listed yet. There is huge demand fr thse types f big bxes that are empty think creative replacement and think creative slutins, said Rbisn. Mike Mss, directr f industrial prperties at Team LBR, pretty much eched what his clleagues are saying abut the cmmercial market. In the industrial segment f the industry, lcally, demand fr space is far utstripping current inventry. He said there is a strng demand fr flexible manufacturing space in Brevard Cunty. We are seeing sme f that grwth being driven by ut f state businesses that are cming here and are ding wrk fr aerspace cmpanies and ther entities. Occupancy in the cunty fr everything frm flex space t warehuse distributin space is at an all time high. We are getting very creative t find slutins fr prspective tenants as well as fr ur landlrds t meet demand. Mss said the I 95 crridr, lcally, is becming a distributin rute fr the state f Flrida. In December f 2017, the Department f Transprtatin mandated electrnic lgging devices fr truckers. They can nly drive a certain number f hurs a day. I think that is ne f the reasns we are starting t see third party lgistics cmpanies cme t Brevard Cunty. He added, They can reach Miami, Tampa, and Jacksnville, and actually all the way t Savannah and back in a ne day perid. S there is less cst invlved fr their transprtatin. We are seeing sme f that grwth. There is just s much ging n right nw in ur industry. As an rganizatin acrss all sectrs f the cmmercial real estate market we are very bullish n Brevard Cunty, added Rbisn. We believe we will cntinue t see a strng wind in the sails f Brevard fr a very lng time based n tday s activity in the market. 23 Club Esteem Cntinued frm page 1 Park in Melburne. S we have seen expnential grwth ver the last 15 years. He added, It s been an incredible success stry partnering with the cmmunity. Ellena is really the driving frce behind the cnnectivity f Club Esteem in the cmmunity. We have cnnectins with mre than a dzen different prgrams in ne way r anther which cntribute t the utcmes and the success f the kids at Club Esteem. The relatinships include United Way f Brevard, which is ne f ur lngest and mst cnsistent supprters, Cmmunity Fundatin fr Brevard, and the Flrida Institute f Technlgy. Flrida Tech has been huge helping us, said McGee. Club Esteem has all kinds f interactin with Flrida Tech. Their psychlgy department, fr instance, des all f ur childhd testing and cunseling fr the prgram. Little s invlvement with Club Esteem began in 1994 as a vlunteer mentr and perfrming arts teacher. Several years later she jined the staff f Club Esteem and served as activities directr, prgram directr, and assistant directr. Our gal is t create pprtunities that help children and teens break free frm the cycle f pverty and develp int healthy, prductive and visin driven adults, Little said. We believe that all children deserve equal pprtunity t reach their full ptential, regardless f their ecnmic circumstances. Club Esteem is cmmitted t helping children and their families btain real lasting success and create meaningful change in their cmmunity. As the executive directr, Little is respnsible fr the develpment and implementatin f the rganizatin s prgrams and curriculum, and determining and addressing the nging needs and interests f Club Esteem s yuth and families. Well run after schl prgrams that ffer a psitive envirnment can help students in lw incme cmmunities be mre academically successful and feel mre cnfident tward their schlwrk, a new study finds. Cnducted by researchers at New Yrk University, the study suggests that such prgrams, which ften bring students in cntact with instructrs wh are similar t them in age and backgrund, are particularly beneficial fr students at risk fr behavir prblems and disengagement frm schl. Students wh had the highest level f scial behaviral risk but attended after schl classrms with mre psitive envirnments als became mre academically engaged, the researchers fund. Club Esteem s prgrams are designed t imprve students academic achievement, imprve their behaviral and scial functining, and increase readiness fr pst high schl educatin, training and emplyment. Club Esteem prides itself n being an agency that prvides a hand up and nt a hand ut t children and families, she says. And that guiding principal has led the way all these years fr the nnprfit rganizatin. Club Esteem prvides a safe and caring envirnment fr children and teens t learn, grw and reach their full ptential. Club Esteem s services include cllege readiness, career explratin, STEM learning, character educatin, perfrming arts, hmewrk assistance, tutring, parenting wrkshps and mre. Additinally, Club Esteem students participate in meaningful cmmunity service learning prjects, educatinal field trips and cllege turs. Ellena has dne a fantastic jb as executive directr, said Dr. Deffebach. Club Esteem has maintained a AUGUST 27, 2018 culture f pride and excellence that puts children n the path t academic and persnal success. She cntinued, Fr example, Club Esteem basts a 100 percent high schl graduatin rate, cmpared t the state f Flrida s average graduatin rate f 60 percent fr lw incme students. Natinally, 46 percent f lw incme students g t cllege, whereas Club Esteem s rate is 95 percent. Dr. Deffebach said 100 percent f Club Esteem students wh attend cllege finish their degree within six years. S as a bard we are super prud f that. We are ding great and helping kids, and we have the real numbers t back that up. When we g ut int the cmmunity and ask peple t invest in ur rganizatin, we can cnfidently tell them they are making a great investment in the future. That s really imprtant t us. Sme f the students elect t serve in the military r g n and earn certificatins that will help them enter the wrkfrce and start a career. We have high expectatins fr Club Esteem graduates, but nt every kid needs t g t cllege, we believe, said Dr. Deffebach. But we d believe that every student needs t have the skills t be able t gain emplyment, get a gd jb with benefits, and be able t supprt a family. Hwever, mst f ur students d g n t cllege. Club Esteem alumni are attending a wide range f clleges, including Flrida Tech, University f Flrida, Gergia Tech, Flrida State University, Flrida Atlantic University, Flrida Internatinal University, University f Suth Flrida, Flrida Agricultural and Mechanical University, Clark University, Hward University, and Eastern Flrida State Cllege. These are first generatin cllege students, she said. Research shws that when the first member f a family ges t cllege, the trajectry f that whle family every generatin t fllw changes frever. New research frm Campus Labs, a higher educatin data cllectin and sftware cmpany, examined the nncgnitive skills f first generatin students and cmpared them t their multigeneratinal peers. The research fund that first generatin students are mre engaged and cmmitted t their educatin. Campus Labs measured respnses t rughly 40 questins frm students at mre than 60 clleges and universities that wrk with the cmpany. We ve had tw first generatin cllege students frm Club Esteem be awarded Gates Millennium Schlarships, said Dr. Deffebach. The Gates Schlarships prvide fr a student s educatin fr as lng as he r she wants t stay in schl. Our tw Gates Schlars are currently bth enrlled in dctral prgrams. One is in mechanical engineering and the ther is studying psychlgy. That s incredible. Established in 1999 with the gal f develping Leaders fr America s Future, the Gates Millennium Schlars Prgram is funded by a $1.6 billin grant frm the Gates Fundatin, making it the largest single gift t a schlarship prvider. The award cvers tuitin, and rm and bard thrughut their bachelr s, master s, and dctral prgrams. The schlarships are fr students frm lw incme backgrunds. They attend Ivy League clleges, flagship state universities, histrically black clleges and universities, and ther institutins. Club Esteem is funded by dnatins frm crpratins, small businesses, families, and individuals, as well as rganizatins such as United Way f Brevard. In additin t that, Club Esteem is funded thrugh varius grants and fundraisers. Our biggest fundraiser f the year, by far, is Rck The Visit BrevardBusinessNews.cm fr Advertising Infrmatin Casbah. It s ne f the mst imprtant events fr us as it pertains t the well being f Club Esteem, said McGee. We raise ver ne third f ur annual perating cst at this fundraiser, added Dr. Deffebach. The event is in its 13th year. This year s theme is The Future is Nw. We have been frtunate in the last few years t see the benefits frm this fundraiser increase. And we re n track, thugh it s early, t d the same this year, thanks t Kim (Deffebach), wh leads this effrt every year (as the event chairwman). She has dne a fantastic jb with Rck The Casbah. This is the hippest fundraiser in twn. That s what peple tell us, said McGee. Because we want this t be a great party, we bring in a band (Blue Stne Circle) frm Universal Studis in Orland, Dr. Deffebach added. We have live music and dancing. That band is very talented. We aim t make it a really great time fr everyne. The gurmet dinner will be prepared by Chef Matt Nugnes (the wner f Matt s Casbah). It s always exciting t see what the chef cmes up with. The fd is always fantastic, said McGee. Club Esteem s gal is t raise $150,000 frm this year s Rck The Casbah and mst f that mney will cme thrugh spnsrships. A limited number f general admissin tickets are available fr purchase. They are $150 each. Spnsrships range frm $500 ( Maker ) t $15,000 ( Visinary ) and include tickets t the event and ther amenities. VIP spnsrships start at $2,500 ( Influencer ) and include reserved seating and full table service. T inquire abut being a spnsr fr Rck The Casbah, cntact Dr. Deffebach at cerckthecasbah@gmail.cm r at Yu can als becme a spnsr by registering nline at ClubEsteem.cm. The prgram will feature shrt speeches by Club Esteem members. S peple can better understand wh they are supprting by attending this event r being a spnsr f this event, she said. Club Esteem was established in 1991 by Gladys Williams, a grandmther wh was alarmed by the challenges facing yung peple in her Suth Melburne neighbrhd near Lipscmb Park Cmmunity Center. Williams, her clse friend Drthy Dt Linsn, and thers believed that the effrts f a few culd change the directin f yuth in and arund their cmmunity. In the spring f 1991, they began a club fr children. The yuth chse the name Club Esteem and defined their gals as staying in schl, making gd grades, and making psitive life chices. In 2003, Junir League f Suth Brevard Inc., the City f Melburne, and general cntractr M.H. Williams Cnstructin jined tgether t build Club Esteem a new facility, next t the Lipscmb Park Cmmunity Center at 3316 Mnre St. In 2004, the Club Esteem Yuth and Family Center pened, ffering expanded prgrams and services five days per week during the schl year. With the pening f the new facility, Club Esteem was able t prvide tutring, mentring, character educatin, cultural arts, and mre t 60 yuth per day at that time. The students have gne n t achieve, and becme leaders in their respective cmmunities. We ve had kids wh have ventured far and are ding great in their careers, and we ve had kids wh have stayed in Brevard and are ding great things here. S ur Club Esteem graduates are all ver the United States right nw. They are making an impact n sciety. It s really exciting t see this.
