LEADING IN A CHANGING WORLD Tom Flick November 3, 2015
awareness Leadership is the name of the game. The speed of the leader determines the rate of the pack.
Opportunities vs. Hazards
Leadership vs. Management Why the distinction is increasingly important
Leadership! Creating vision and strategy! Communicating vision and strategy! Removing barriers! Getting buy-in! Motivating action! Creating the systems that allow for innovation, opportunities, and growth.
The 2 greatest challenges leaders have growing their business
1 st Challenge Complacency People think that what they are doing is just fine
I ve got this figured out. I m OK the way I am. Change? What s the point of that? I ve been successful for sometime now, I m doing fine. 8
2 nd Challenge False Urgency Frenetic behavior: meeting-meeting, PowerPoint-PowerPoint, protectprotect, task-force-task-force
I m burned out. I don t trust anyone to get this done but me. I ve been in meetings all day, I m exhausted! I feel like I m in survivor mode. 10
What holds us back? 11
The #1 asset leaders have growing their business
A Huge Asset True Urgency People come to work every day determined to seize real opportunities and avoid real hazards
I live consciously, and with purpose. I am constantly looking for ways to grow and get better. Only I can change and see change in others. I am accountable for my attitudes and behaviors. Great opportunities are everywhere.
True Urgency Phrases I found two ways that I can be visible to my team today to drive true urgency. I m open to learning and relentless improvement. I act with urgency and play to win to inspire my team. I m flexible and responsive to my customers. I m purging non-value added activities out of my I know one or more people I can talk to today to help create urgency for our big opportunity. We trust and empower each other to do the best work of our lives. I know how I can help knock down that barrier that stops us from moving forward. I model the change I wish to see in others. It isn t about what we can t do. It is about what we can do.
True Urgency looks like Creating action that is Exceptionally alert Externally oriented Internally aligned Relentlessly aimed at winning Making progress every day Constantly purging low value activities By focusing on the HEART and the MIND
Win the day Create a list of 1-3 opportunities you ll focus on that will ensure you win the day Now determine a list of 1-3 dangers/hazards that would prevent you from winning the day 17
