The Beauty of October National Cyber Security Awareness Month You should start planning for October s Cyber Security Awareness now. Approach October as an opportunity to engage your coworkers and create fun, unique experiences. Here are some ideas for how to plan now for success. B. Phase 1: June/July Pre-Planning Goals What do we want to start thinking about? Themes Focus on 1-2 behaviors (e.g., social media security, reporting incidents, or s) Reinforcement of behaviors Don t overwhelm users People will get outside messages from social media sources/news Stick to the road map How do you stay on track? 2 Budget If you have a small budget Beg, borrow, and steal from other departments if you have no allocations. Sponsorship If you do a good job, they might sponsor again the following year. Make sure you don t have any other conflicts or other events happening during October It is usually benefits elections month Coordinate with other departments as far as the timing of messaging Rough Overview 6 Key Ways to Communicate Your Messages 1. Events Live hacking demonstration Think about including everyone Online scavenger hunt for global audiences Takes a lot of forethought Complete a task each week (example: go to the internet site and tell me the answer to a question, or successfully report a phishing , or attend live in person, or watch a live hacking demonstration, identify different classification levels (copy from the website)). Only people who complete all four are entered into the raffle for a high-value gift like a TV or ipad. Right now globally October is not Cyber Security Awareness month. Ambassadors Extended team members in other regions Another reason to plan ahead C. Phase 2: July/August Planning Create a Planning Committee Stay local Pull experts in each area/gather key stakeholders Have a rough draft and outline of your plan and core goals to present to them Get buy-in and ask for criticism Discover roadblocks Identify other teams plans Assign roles Corporate communications team no internal conflicts IT team no updates going on to provide awareness around Where could you go wrong?
