1 CEPE Annual Conference & General Assembly September 2014, Riga/Latvia Paint IT smart! Talents and processes the ingredients to face the future Focus sessions on: Decorative Coatings Industrial Coatings

2 Paint IT smart Talents and processes, the ingredients to face the future It is always essential to keep the right balance: Between work and life, investment and return-oninvestment, as well as between smart heads and smart technologies. In our ever more digitalised industrial business environment, the latter becomes increasingly important. While we are striving to put this goal into action, it conveys a question at the same time: What does the right balance mean? Which parameters need to be applied when assessing the European Coatings paint industry? Do we need to differentiate further depending on size, structure, goals and portfolio of the respective companies? To what extent is it reasonable and feasible for the European coatings industry to adopt the industry 4.0 concept today and in the near future? Everyone is speaking about it, but the concept has not been implemented by many companies. Even if industry 4.0 may seem far away for some of the European SMEs, there is no way to ignore it in the long run. According to this year s keynote speaker Karl-Heinz Land a company s so-called digital readiness will be an imperative factor for every market player to ensure future competitiveness. A central element of industry 4.0 is the fusion of virtual and real industrial worlds. An important part of this process will be the reevaluation of the human role. For the European coatings industry, long-term competitiveness is not imaginable without employees equipped with suitable knowledge and commitment. CEPE has drawn attention to an imminent shortage of paint chemists with a B.A. or M.A. degree for several years. A shortage of professional workers will affect the innovation potential of our industry. As a consequence, well-trained graduates will be in high demand. Come to Riga to hear how the CEPE Task Force dealing with industry and education can assist you. Without doubt, coatings experts will be an essential part of the future of smart coating factories, advancing transformation in production, resource efficiency, and ergonomics, ensuring at the same time that customers and business partners can be embraced directly in value-added processes. Are smart manufacturing processes game changers in the competitive landscape of the paint and coatings industry or merely another timely tool to support smart heads with smart structures and technologies? It seems indisputable that the human being is the determining factor in the entire process of innovation and transformation. Whatever the right answer may be: It is worthwhile attending this year s CEPE Annual Conference in Riga! Come to get the bigger picture of promising new strategies focusing on smart factories, talents and customer care. Do you want to know how Europe s paint industry can differentiate itself? Join us from September to zoom-in on these subjects and find your individual approach. Best regards, Jan van der Meulen Managing Director CEPE Sponsored by
