1 The Convenience Retail Awards How to Guide Entries Setting up an account If you are a new user If you have previously registered for this event or any of our other events, your log in details will stay the same across all our FluidReview sites. Step 1: Go to Step 2: Click Create new account button under the Not used this site before? header. 1

2 Step 3: Fill out the below details and press Register at the bottom of the page. Step 4: You will then receive a confirmation containing a link. Make sure you click on this link to activate your account. Once you have done this, you will be able to log in using the below process. Please note: s from FluidReview may automatically be sent to your spam or junk folder. Please make sure you check these folders. If you have not received an within 2 hours please contact Jessica Pope on or by Jessica.Pope@wrbm.com. 2

3 Signing in Step One: Enter the address your account is registered with and the corresponding password in the Sign In box below. If you have previously registered for another event, your log in details will stay the same across all our FluidReview sites. 4 Completing your Store Award Step 1: You will now be on your account home page. From here you need to begin filling out your store award entry. Click Start next to Store Details Form. 4

5 Step 2: You will now need to answer the following questions. 5

6 Please note the word count for the above questions. For details on criteria and what photos you need to upload please refer to the bottom of this help guide. 6

7 You will not be able to submit any written documents after this point. Please make sure you have written about your store and the category award you wish to enter in this section. Step 3: Once you have completed your form click Submit at the bottom of the form. Once this form is submitted you will not be able to make changes to this yourself. You can press Save & continue later if you would like to come back to the form to complete it another time. Please ensure that you have accepted our terms of entry, to review these please refer to If you have any problems submitting your form please contact Jessica Pope on or by on 7

8 Step 4: Once your form is submitted click Enter the Store Awards or Return to your Account to upload your supporting photos. Step 5: From your account home page click Edit next to your entry. 8

9 Step 6: You will now need to upload your supporting photos. Click Start next to the first photo. Please note you can only upload one photo per category. 9

10 Step 7: From here you can browse for files on your computer or drag and drop the photo from your folder. The file types that you are able to upload are listed on the right hand side. Step 8: Once you have uploaded your photo the system will show you a preview. If it is correct press Back at the top of the page. This will take you back to your list of photos. Complete steps 6-8 to upload all your other photos. 10

11 Step 9: Once all of your photos have been uploaded you now need to submit them. Please note if you do not submit your entry is not complete. Click Submit Store Award. Step 10: Click Continue If you have any problems uploading your photos or submitting them please contact Jessica Pope on or on 11

12 Step 11: You will now need to click Back to account if you are not entering any category awards. If you wish to enter these click enter the Category Awards. Completing your Category Awards Step 1: You will be taken to the below screen which list s all of the categories that you can enter. Click Apply Now next to the category you wish to enter. 12

Step 3: From here you can browse for files on your computer or drag and drop the photo from your folder. The file types that you are able to upload are listed on the right hand side. 13

14 Step 4: Once you have uploaded your photo the system will show you a preview. If it is correct press Back at the top of the page. Step 5: You will now be back at your entry overview. You now need to submit it. Please note if you do not press submit, your entry is not complete. Click Submit Category Award. 14

15 Step 6: Click Continue. Step 7: Your category entry is now complete. You can enter further categories by clicking Enter more Category Awards or go back to your account and log out if you are finished by clicking Back to account. 15

16 Criteria & Category Information What you need to enter Convenience Awards 2018 You will need the following information to complete our entry form: Store & contact details Store category Photos You will be asked to provide information about your store s achievements in these areas below: * Average weekly turnover, year-on-year turnover increase, years trading. These will give us an idea of your business success, and recent business growth. We understand that total achievable turnover depends on location and competition, but we are looking for a high turnover per square foot. * Key product categories We are looking for a good convenience range, so please list the key elements that make up your product range. We will assume that the ones you list first are categories of particular strength. *Community support activity Please explain the role played by the in-store team in engaging with both customers and the local community. Examples might be additional services for elderly shoppers, charity work or local community initiatives. * Points of difference If you have introduced any innovations such as new products, merchandising initiatives, marketing techniques, in-store technology, or improvements to the delivery of customer value let us know here. * Why you should win This last field is for you to outline what makes your store different and truly special. It might be your team of staff, your history of investment or overcoming obstacles, or your trading ethos and philosophy that sets you apart. We re looking for a great story to go with your great store! Photographs Images in jpeg format, maximum file size 2MB. Photographs should include: One exterior/shopfront showing fascia and any signage One photograph of yourself and manager/business partner if applicable Till point/counter Evidence of local community involvement/local product sourcing 16

17 Any other significant points of difference at your store Clear views of all the major product categories. High standards of cleanliness, product availability and in-store theatre. The first stage of judging is based entirely on your photographs and entry form, so please ensure your photographs show your store at its best. STORE AWARDS CATEGORIES To enter the awards you must first enter one of our Store Awards and then your chosen category award(s). BEST INDEPENDENT CONVENIENCE STORE: A single store or part of a group of 9 stores or fewer under the same ownership, trading under a symbol or retailer s own brand; (1,500 3,000sq ft in size). BEST MULTIPLE OR FRANCHISE CONVENIENCE STORE: Part of a group of 10 stores or more under the same ownership, or any store trading under a retail brand as part of a franchise programme; (1,500 3,000sq ft in size). BEST LARGE CONVENIENCE STORE: Any store larger than 3,000sq ft in selling space, regardless of ownership or retail brand. BEST SMALL CONVENIENCE STORE: Any store smaller than 1,500sq ft in selling space, regardless of ownership or retail brand. Please write as much as you can about your store, including any information regarding the category awards you wish to enter. CATEGORY AWARDS Best Chilled Food Retailer (sponsored by Muller) Your entry should reflect the growing importance of chilled food in the convenience retailing industry and include a photograph of your in-store display, and a description of how you manage the category both operationally and in terms of range stocked on the store details form. 17

18 THE JUDGES WILL BE LOOKING FOR: 1. A strong range of products backed up with eye-catching promotional activity. 2. High standards of food safety and product availability. 3. An understanding of the key categories in chilled food and a commitment to providing them for your customers. Off Licence Store of the Year (sponsored by Pernod Ricard) Your entry, through the use of a written statement on the store details form and an uploaded photograph should demonstrate how your range, merchandising and customer engagement makes your store a trusted and successful off-licence destination for your customers. THE JUDGES WILL BE LOOKING FOR: 1. A well-merchandised alcohol range with clearly defined product categories to help customers shop the fixtures easily. 2. Good use of chilled merchandising for beer, cider, wine and premixed products to capitalise on immediate consumption opportunities. 3. A strong and coherent spirits range covering the key product categories, plus value, mainstream and premium brands. 4. A strong understanding of the shopper to aid effective customer communication through the use of POS material, special offers and value communication, or recommendations (eg wine and food matching) in order to increase demand. Food to Go Retailer of the Year Convenience stores have a big opportunity to satisfy customers and build sales with a compelling food to go offer, including sandwiches, hot food, impulse items and drinks to go, with solutions for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks throughout the day. This award will celebrate the leader in the field. THE JUDGES WILL BE LOOKING FOR: 1. An enticing and varied food to go offer, containing both chilled and hot food elements. 2. Good use of pos material, customer communication and meal deals to help drive basket spend at key times of the day. 3. A commitment to using imaginative recipes, quality products and ingredients to keep shoppers satisfied. 18

19 Best Use of Technology Your entry should show how you have used various forms of technology to drive efficiencies, sales, profits, and operational excellence throughout your retail business. THE JUDGES WILL BE LOOKING FOR: 1. Retailers demonstrating a commitment to integrating technology within their day-to-day business operation to solve common problems, optimise efficiency and keep costs down. 2. Evidence of collecting and using store sales data to make business decisions, and to manage stock, profitability and departmental and shop sales. 3. Innovative use of technology to engage with shoppers in order to build customer loyalty and drive sales in store. Best Customer Service (sponsored by Bestway) Your entry should show that you are committed to high levels of customer service, and going the extra mile for your customers. THE JUDGES WILL BE LOOKING FOR: 1. Evidence of a clear commitment to high standards of customer service, including details of staffing levels; staff training and communications; assistance for elderly or infirm customers; product sourcing; and out-ofstore developments such as home delivery. 2. Evidence of any specific initiatives, such as themed events or store developments to make shopping easier for your customers. Best Mealtime Missions Award (sponsored by Aunt Bessie s) To recognise the retailer(s) who have made their stores a destination for shoppers looking for a quick-to-prepare but tasty meal at home, through high store standards, shopper-friendly layouts and innovative communication. THE JUDGES WILL BE LOOKING FOR 1. A mission-based store layout with product adjacency and customer flow planned in order to provide an entire solution for a home-cooked meal, combining fresh and ambient elements. 2. An appealing store environment with a commitment to excellence in fresh food. 19

Effective POS material, product merchandising and other forms of customer communication to provide inspiration for shoppers searching for a mealtime solution, including a variety of cuisines and meal types. Innovation Award (sponsored by Republic Technologies UK) This award recognises an individual or store team who has shown they are at the cutting edge of convenience retailing, by swiftly adapting their business to meet the new challenges and opportunities of trading today. THE JUDGES WILL BE LOOKING FOR: 1. The introduction of new products and/or services to capitalise on local business opportunities. 2. Recent adjustment of existing fixtures and ranges because of changed market circumstances, such as making modifications to a tobacco gantry due to legislative changes or new customer preferences. A fresh-thinking approach to non-restricted products within the tobacco category. 3. A commitment to innovation, by having plans in place in place for further store developments in the future. Community Retailer of the Year Your entry, should describe how you are working with your store to help better your local community or the area surrounding your store. THE JUDGES WILL BE LOOKING FOR: 1. Retailers who have made a direct impact on bettering their local area by taking a leading role in youth, employment, environmental or charitable projects. 2. Evidence of bespoke initiatives, such as charity projects or events, demonstrating a commitment to the local area through business, sporting or charity investments. 3. A partnership approach, including working with local authorities or local bodies to enhance the area surrounding their store. Best Communication to Shoppers This award will be presented to the store that, in the opinion of the judges, shows the most impressive levels of customer engagement and communication. THE JUDGES WILL BE LOOKING FOR: 20

21 1. Clear communication of the range and in-store offer eg value, premium, and local produce, plus additional services. 2. An innovative approach to the presentation of products and services, creating incremental sales opportunities. 3. Use of social media, digital technology or more traditional means to engage shoppers with the activities of the store. Responsible Retailing Award Your entry should demonstrate how you are actively preventing underage sales of age-restricted products, following best practice and ensuring that your store trades in accordance with local community values. THE JUDGES WILL BE LOOKING FOR: 1. Implementation of best practice in preventing sales of age-restricted goods to underage purchasers. 2. A proactive relationship with enforcement authorities. 3. Support for local initiatives to foster good community relationships. 4. Evidence of, and commitment to, staff training. 5. Proactively working to combat the illicit tobacco and alcohol trade in the community. Energy Efficiency Award Your entry should demonstrate how you and your team work to manage, and where possible, reduce your store s annual energy consumption. This could be achieved in a variety of different ways, from big-ticket energy saving initiatives such as doors on chillers and LED lighting, to less costly solutions such as night blinds and PIR sensors. THE JUDGES WILL BE LOOKING FOR: 1. Retailers who have a detailed understanding of their store s energy consumption, how it fluctuates throughout the year, areas of the business that have the highest consumption plus energy contract terms and tariffs. 2. Stores that are managing and, where possible, reducing their consumption of energy and other natural resources. 3. Evidence of staff awareness and engagement with energy saving practices and schemes, and communication of these to customers. 21

22 Best New Store This award is open to stores that have opened from scratch, or re-opened after a significant remodelling, during the calendar year This award will be given to the store which, in the opinion of the judges, is the best example of a modern convenience store and is open to stores of all sizes, and any ownership structure. If you would like to be considered for this award please provide all the entry details for the main store awards, and tick the field for Best New Store. THE JUDGES WILL BE LOOKING FOR: 1. High levels of quality in range and product presentation, staff and customer facilities, and operational excellence. 2. A sympathetic design with the environment and local community in mind. 3. A proven business success for the owners, even in its early weeks or months. Best Fresh Produce Retailer Entries should demonstrate how your store or business is making it easier for customers to eat fruit and vegetables. This award will celebrate those who go the extra mile to promote healthy produce in store. THE JUDGES WILL BE LOOKING FOR: 1. Retailers that have demonstrated a commitment to increase the range of fresh fruit and vegetables in store, with promotions targeted toward the sale of fruit and vegetables both on their own and as part of wider meal solutions in store. This could include recipe ideas and serving suggestions, and could be within the store itself or as part of an online engagement strategy. 2. Evidence of working with the local community to promote fresh fruit and vegetables, whether through partnership with schools, local business groups or other community activities. 3. Retailers that are innovating in store to promote the sale of fruit and vegetables, both in the way that fruit and veg is located in store, and the way that the store promotes healthy products on social media, through the use of technology, and in other marketing activity. Product of the Year (sponsored by best-one) This award will be decided by a telephone poll of Convenience Store readers, so please do not upload any information here. 22

23 Retailer s Retailer of the Year (sponsored by Pladis) This award will be selected by a panel of Pladis Ambassador retailers from all the entries based on the information provided in your entry as a whole. No additional material is required, but make sure your entry shows you in the best possible light and you might be in with a chance of winning! 23
