7 Multi-Media Solutions one source We are the for your customized solution GUIDE TO SALINA 2016 H O L I D A Y E D I T I O N RECIPES FROM READERS O FIVE CATEGORIES O OVER 75 RECIPES A product of the SALINA JOURNAL $ 4 FALL 2016 An Advertising Supplement of the Salina Journal SUNDAY, JUNE 5, 2016 Farmers markets growing in NCKS food system By TIM UNRUH I think we re doing OK. We just need more people aware of the quality of local food, John Thelander said. We re always looking for more variety in vendors. Salina Journal Outlets for fresh local fruits and vegetables, meats, eggs, milk and cheese; sweets, treats, and crafts, could be poised for expansion as the reincarnation of regional food systems continues in north-central Kansas. In a state where food production has flourished for generations, farmers markets represent a throwback option; when good food from fields and pastures nearby could be purchased, at least from late spring through the fall. It s an advantage for our local population, said Phyll Klima, managing partner of Kitchen 4Hire, which operates the Ninth and Grand Farmers Market. We re trying to get back to the point where we can feed ourselves, and not be so dependent on the food superhighway, she said. Three markets in Salina For the second straight year, there are three outdoor markets available in Salina at separate times during the week, and they all accept food stamps. Some vendors take credit and debit cards, Klima said. Salina Farmers Market, in the Waters True Value parking lot, 460 S. Ohio, 7:30 to 11 a.m. every Saturday from May 7 through mid-october. Downtown Farmers Market, 4 to 7 p.m. Fridays through mid-september at 321 N. Ninth, just north of the Dairy Queen. Ninth and Grand Farmers Market open from 4 to 7 p.m. every Tuesday through Sept. 30, at the corner of Ninth Street and Grand Avenue. If you prefer indoor shopping, Salina is also home to Prairieland Market, 305 E. Walnut, that stocks produce from many of the same producers in the farmers markets. Prairieland is open from 2 to 6 p.m. every Tuesday through Thursday; 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Spirit of cooperation The markets are hardly competitors. The aim is to work together and provide greater access to local food, said Melanie Sanders, Prairieland s general manager. Our goal is to support local people and give them an avenue to distribute what they produce, she said. And for the consumer, Prairieland provides a daily market for people to access local produce, Klima said. Through a grant a couple of years ago from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and another one that s in the application process, a local food task force is working on a plan to better distribute local foods. The outcome would hopefully allow us to reach out and coordinate in the area, create a plan for the distribution of local foods, and make it happen, Sanders said. Prairieland is working toward accepting food stamps, she said. Ten producers are participating in a program to sell local boxes of produce through the Prairieland Market, she said. The market itself is growing and the local foods are the most popular things we sell, Sanders said. Excited to get started The Downtown Farmers Market is run by Larry and Teresa Brundridge, who live and raise produce near Concordia. We got some hail on Mother s Day, but everything else is looking good, Teresa Brundridge said. We re excited about getting started in the market this year. We need to get more vendors to come. The Salina markets are far from exclusive, Klima said. We try to fit the schedules of the region, she said. Kansas Area Agencies on Aging provide vouchers to senior citizens to use at farmers markets, said Mardy File, manager of the Beloit Farmers Market. The Kansas Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program provides a monetary benefit to low-income seniors living in Kansas to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables, herbs and honey from certified farmers at Farmers Markets in Kansas, according to the Kansas Department of Health & Environment website. This market has been so great for our community, File said of Beloit. The Beloit market is in its seventh year and averages from 14 to 21 vendors a week, she said. September in Moses Shane Park. Hillsboro Farmers Market, 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday from Memorial Day to Labor Day in Memorial Park. Service organizations often offer meals. Herington Farmers Market, 8 to 11 a.m. Saturdays through the growing season in downtown Herington, Broadway Boulevard and Walnut Street. Belleville Farmers Market, 8 to 11 a.m. Saturdays through September on the courthouse square in downtown Belleville. Cawker City Farmers Market, 8 to 10 a.m. Saturdays starting June 4 and running through September in City Park. Reporter Tim Unruh can be reached at or by at tunruh@salina.com. Saturday, May 21, 2016 (Aaron Anders/Salina Journal) Each market is unique While there is a connection, the markets enjoy their own flavors. Some pipe in music or have live performers. Others may feature a chef who can show how to turn local ingredients into succulent dishes. Another food vendor buys straight from the booths and prepares food to sell onsite. Salina Farmers Market has an average of 10 or more vendors, and what s offered varies, depending and what s ready or ripe, said John Thelander.
