Kind of disappointing at first By uwe schaefer this book is about making you a good coder instead of making your code good. that means that it focuses on the people and the process. most of the views shared are easy to agree with while hard to do. i was disappointed about the size at first, but it is extensive enough to illustrate its topic, while very clear and to the point without any babbeling around. after all, i realized that this is a good thing. while this all is a valuable read, i somehow expected something different from such a bright mind of the software industry. nevertheless i like it and maybe it has a deeper impact than just another tech book. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A short software book unlike any other I have read By Ian Marshall This excellent book is not padded with pages and pages of code listings (and the re-hashing of existing manuals and guides). The book has a powerful message and each short section has weight.

This is a very important point: as a former method improvement engineer, one of your reviewer's guiding maxims is "work smarter not harder". This book uses some very short code examples in Java. But even if you know no Java nor C#, the examples are brief and clear enough that the points will still be made. There are 8 pages on improving Java, which the non-java person can skip - but this is a small sacrifice to read a book unlike any other software book I have seen. AN insightful read... By Joe Cincotta There are a few things in this piece I struggle with - there is an assumption of a dysfunctional software development culture. So, at times it feels a little 'us and them' - but you know, I think I can get over that part. The other aspect is that it comes from the perspective of 'written by developers for developers' - and again, I can get over it, but - as a manager - it gives a higher degree of friction to some of the points the author wants to make. That all said, the piece is well written, and even if you don't accept everything the author has to say, there are some real gems in this book and that alone makes it worth the read. The key points are summarised at the end of each section. It's direct and to the point, so no farting about with unnecessary verbosity. Bottom line: Buy it - even if you disagree with some points or don't like the way the author positions some of the points, there is some really good actionable stuff in there every development team should take to heart - even if they are doing a lot of stuff RIGHT most of the time!
