1 Position: Location: Reporting to: Energy Trader Wellington Energy Trading Manager Band: 4 Date: March 2011 This position profile affirms the purpose of your role, confirms your key accountabilities and authorities and outlines the relationships you need to foster. 1 Role purpose The purpose of this role is to provide a continuous and compliant trading function operating in the New Zealand Electricity Market with a core focus on maximising revenue within approved risk limits. To achieve this purpose you will work a combination of shift, day and relief work and contribute to training new traders when required. 2 Role value Meridian Energy earns a large component of its revenue from selling its hydro and wind generation into the New Zealand Electricity Market. This market operates in half hourly segments, continuously 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. The Energy Traders are responsible for providing the real time trading function. The Energy Traders maximise net energy revenue, whilst optimising the best use of resources in accordance with trading policy, strategy, plans and tactics. The team also provides key inputs into other parts of the Markets & Production Business Unit and Meridian Energy. 3 Role accountabilities You are accountable for your own output and for contributing to the output of the Business Unit. You will attend to all dimensions of your role the technical and people dimensions. Technical You are expected to: Energy Trading Maximise revenue within approved risk limits by understanding and implementing the agreed trading strategy, plan and tactics and providing feedback where changes are necessary. 2 Take into account a wide variety of inputs when bidding and offering into the market to be consistent where possible with the trading strategy, plan and tactics including, but not limited to, plant availability, hydrology, minimum and maximum generation requirements, competitor activities, tranche size and pricing, price stack volatility, transmission constraints, planned and unplanned outages, ancillary service availability and strategy, wind generation quantities and rule/legislative compliance. Manage transmission constraint risk in real-time by understanding the impact of planned and unplanned outages and implementing the appropriate steps including formulation of offers, load management and stand-by generation. Work closely with the Generation Controllers and Energy Trading and Dispatch Planner to refine the trading strategy, trading tactics and hydraulic operational planning to maximise NER. Monitor current and forecast hydrological conditions including lake levels, river flows, rainfall and spill flows and take the appropriate action in response to this information. Conduct real time market analysis. This includes monitoring competitor generation patterns, transmission flows and capability and plant and transmission outages affecting generation and prices. Record experience and learning s from trading in various knowledge management systems. Continually seek to improve and contribute to policies, strategies, systems, processes and procedures. Roster Relief/Day Work Duties Represent the Energy Traders in interactions with the wider business and participate in meetings as required. Maintaining the data integrity and usefulness of knowledge management systems. Be proactive and investigate/analyse market information as required to support current and future trading strategies. Provide ad hoc analytical support to the team as requested/required. Attend Industry forums and keep up to date on upcoming changes within the industry. Complete testing of the Energy Traders disaster recovery options. Contribute to projects as required by the Energy Trading & Dispatch Planner and Energy Trading and Dispatch Analyst. Provide cover for annual leave, sick leave and training requirements of other Energy Traders. This can mean working irregular shifts and not being able to leave the Wellington region during your period of relief work. Any other reasonable work request made by your manager from time to time. People You are expected to: Develop and maintaining strong positive working relationship with the Generation Controllers and the Energy Trading and Dispatch Planner to ensure business as usual operations maximise NER whilst managing compliance. You are expected to support the Energy Trading and Dispatch Analyst in working closely with the Information & Communications Technology team to facilitate the ongoing maintenance and development of the Energy Trading systems and toolset. 3 Work with the wider Wholesale Markets Team, including the Hydrologist, Work Program Scheduler, Portfolio Team, Financial Trading Team, Product and Market Development Team and Transmission Team to maximise Net Energy Revenue across the board.
