5 Questions 1 to 5 are about a coffee shop. 1. The number of customers last year was thirty thousand and fifty three. What is thirty thousand and fifty three in figures? (1 mark) The manager looks at a chart showing the numbers of customers each month from June last year. Number of customers using the coffee shop each month 3000 Number of customers June July August September October November December Month 2. She compares the numbers in June and July. How many fewer customers were there in July? (2 marks)

6 3. The manager wants a record of sales to put on the staff notice board. The assistants keep a tally of the snacks they sell on Monday. 7 The manager decides to make some changes in the coffee shop. She tells some builders to put a barrier around the space where they will work. 4. The space is a rectangle that measures 6 metres by 8 metres. What is the perimeter of the space where they will work? (2 marks) 5. The builders will use special posts to make the barrier. Each post has a tape which they can pull out and clip to the next post. Each post and its tape can stretch up to 2 metres. 2m max What is the smallest number of these posts that the builders need to go right round the space? 8 Questions 6 to 12 are about a man buying floor tiles and under floor heating. 6. The man wants under floor heating in his kitchen. He works out the area of the floor. The kitchen floor is a square and each side is 3.5 metres long. What is the area of the kitchen floor? (2 marks) 7. The saleswoman looks at this table to find which under floor heating pack the man needs. 9 The saleswoman shows the man some different patterns of floor tiles. He decides to use this pattern. A Measure the angle marked A on the tile pattern. What is the size of the angle? (1 mark) 9. Add one more tile to the diagram to continue the pattern. (2 marks) 10. The man works out that it will take 280 tiles to cover the floor. He decides to order an extra 20% of the tiles. 10 11. The man orders the under floor heating and floor tiles. The total to pay is 720. The saleswoman says that if the man pays 144 for a deposit he can pay the rest over 12 months. She uses this formula to work out each monthly payment. monthly payment = total to pay deposit 12 How much is each monthly payment? (2 marks) 12. The man says: I want the order this week. The saleswoman says: There s no chance for this week, but there is a very good chance of a delivery next week. 11 Questions 13 to 17 are about a woman shopping. The woman is going to make pancakes and store them in her fridge. 13. She checks the temperature of her fridge to see if it is cold enough. What temperature does the thermometer show, to the nearest degree? (1 mark) 14. She wants to make pancakes for 24 people. This is part of the recipe for pancakes. Pancakes for 4 people you will need: 100g plain flour 1 egg 250ml milk oil for cooking How much milk does she need to make pancakes for 24 people? 12 15. The woman goes to the supermarket to do her shopping. She looks at the packets of plain flour for sale. The supermarket sells 1.5 kilogram and 500 gram packets. 13 16. The woman finishes her shopping at 2:25pm. Her bus home is due at quarter past every hour. How long does she have to wait until the next bus is due? (1 mark) 17. She decides to go for a drink and a flapjack at the coffee shop while she waits. She has up to 3.50 to spend in the coffee shop. Choose a drink and a flapjack that she can afford. Show your working. 17 Introduction to the task You work in a large store called PLANET. Your job is to help customers choose what they want in the store. You must use the Information pack to help the customer buy a laptop and a printer. She has 500 to spend. Read through all the steps (A-G) below before you start. A. Find the cheapest priced laptop that has a screen size between 14 inches and 16 inches. B. Work out how much money the customer has left to spend on a printer. C. Look at the printer information and work out for each printer the average (mean) review score and the range of the review scores. D. Compare the prices and the scores. Select which laptop and printer you want to recommend to the customer. E. Check your calculations are correct. Show at least one example of a check you have done. F. Check your answers to the problem are sensible. Explain why you think your answers are sensible. G. Use a table, chart, graph or diagram to help you explain to the customer what you think she should buy.
