Grand Blvd., Suite 319 St. Luis, MO Additinal Guidelines fr Perfrmance Presentatin and Speaker Events This dcument is t assist Student Organizatins when utilizing the Perfrmance, Presentatin, and Speaker Plicy (PPSP) (Please refer t the full plicy t assist yur grup in discussins and planning). Since student rganizatins and departments are respnsible fr uphlding University plicies such as the PPSP these additinal guidelines are t prvide supprt and guidance fr a student rganizatin during their event planning prcess fr events/ prgrams that fit their rganizatinal gals while adhering t the University missin and values. While Saint Luis University acknwledges a student's individual right t express and explain his r her wn beliefs, by virtue f its Cathlic, Jesuit character, the time, place and manner f exercising speech n campus fr events planned by students and recgnized student rganizatins is subject t plicies and prcedures adpted by the University. As such, the University reserves the right t review prgrams prpsed by students and recgnized student rganizatins, including thse which are funded in full r in part by University surces (e.g., student activity fee). It als reserves the right t reject r alter prgrams that the University deems t be incnsistent with its values and missin. This means that a balanced prgram, ne that wuld include pprtunities fr ppsing viewpints t be presented, may be necessary in rder fr Refer t the full Plicy at

2 cntrversial scietal, plitical, mral and/r ecclesiastical tpics t be addressed in a way that prvides a mre cmplete educatinal experience and understanding f the subject matter. (3.4.E.1. frm the PPSP) Examples f prgrams that the University wuld nt apprve wuld include thse deemed t encurage, celebrate r glrify hatred, vilence, abusive behavir, religius intlerance, irrespnsible r illicit drug and alchl use, and the bjectificatin f human beings. Furthermre, the University will nt apprve any campus prgram which it determines cannt be held in a safe, rderly way, in adherence t its plicies and prcedures, and withut significant interference t ther University events r nrmal functins. (Taken frm 3.4.E.2 f the PPSP) During Prgram Planning: Student Organizatins have a respnsibility t have a full discussin that invlves thughtful reflectin when cnsidering develping a prgram that invlves a presentatin, perfrmer r speaker. It is suggested t invlve the advisr and the executive bard minimally in the discussin when cnsidering events that may need additinal reflectin and planning. Each student rganizatin leadership and membership may be made up differently s cnsider wh needs t be represented in the discussin. Keep in Mind the Values f Saint Luis University: Saint Luis University is cmmitted t hlistic student learning and develpment, and prmtes values that inspire standards f cnduct at Saint Luis University which are guided by: 1) respect and cmpassin fr the dignity f all persns; 2) a genuine regard fr all persns and finding Gd in all things; 3) a cmmitment t creating a Refer t the full Plicy at

3 cmmunity f dialgue and service; 4) care and cncern fr self, thers, and cmmunity; 5) a recgnitin that all persns live in slidarity with ne anther; 6) a cmmitment t justice and serving the pr and marginalized; 7) hlistic frmatin f the mind, bdy, heart and spirit; and 8) an understanding that individuals develp, nt in islatin, but in interactins with thers. Reflectin Questins: (Cnsider having discussin abut the fllwing questin prmpts with yur student rganizatin prir t selecting the delivery methd such as a presenter, perfrmer, r speaker.) What is yur student rganizatin trying t accmplish with the event? What are the learning utcmes and bjectives fr the event? What characteristics d we wish t have in the speaker/ perfrmer/etc. t fulfill these learning bjectives? And then... Wh are ptential speakers/perfrmers/etc. that fulfills these characteristics? If yur grup s bjective is t have fun r prvide entertainment; hw is this dne in the guidelines f the PPSP? What is the brader gal beynd having fun r prviding entertainment? (Example: Is it t build cmmunity? If s, then hw will this be accmplished?) Hw des the perfrmer/speaker/etc. help accmplish the bjective and meet the learning utcmes? Why is this specific perfrmer/speaker/etc. uniquely psitined t address these utcmes? Refer t the full Plicy at

4 Given the value Saint Luis University places n diversity and inclusin relevant t ur Jesuit heritage and values, des the event have the ptential t plarize anther grup n r ff campus? If s, what steps have been r can be taken t utreach t that grup prir t the event? Is there a way fr grups t wrk tgether t create an educatinal event that shwcases multiple pints f view? (These reflectin questins shuld be revisited nce research ccurs n the ptential speaker/perfrmer/etc. since infrmatin may nt be available until the grup begins researching the ptential speaker/ perfrmer/etc.) Refer t the PPSP and The Oath f Inclusin t assist yur grup during yur internal review prcess. What types f cllabratin culd ccur t meet yur bjectives? Are there academic departments, ther campus departments, student rganizatins, etc. that culd partner with yur student rganizatin t have a c-spnsrship? Student rganizatins are encuraged t meet with ther grups t cnsider pssible cllabratrs prir t settling n ne speaker/perfrmer/etc. This als encurages shared partnerships t decrease duplicatin f events and resurces. Cnsider appraching ther grups/departments during yur planning prcess r minimally befre yu cmplete yur plans. Things t Cnsider: Is the event being planned as an utdr event? Need t cnsider city rdinances fr utdr events. If the event is utdrs then cnsider what culd ccur if peple chse nt t attend Refer t the full Plicy at

5 but they can still see r hear the perfrmer/speaker. What utreach r ntificatin des yur grup need t d t ensure that thers n campus are aware f yur utdr event? Outdr venues create additinal items fr the student grup t cnsider discuss with yur advisrs if yu are unsure f steps t take. Yur grup can als cntact the Student Invlvement Center r Events Services t understand additinal steps when planning utdr events. T assure prviding an inclusive event what steps will yur rganizatin make t assure accmmdatin needs/requests frm individuals? What reviews f the backgrund f the intended speaker/ perfrmer has yur student rganizatin cmpleted beynd reading the perfrmers / speaker s bi? Please cnduct a thrugh search and prvide the infrmatin in yur nline Prgram Planning Frm (PPF) Search nline fr news articles is there infrmatin regarding the perfrmer/speaker that culd be in cnflict with Cathlic teachings r values? Find nline vides t view their past perfrmances/lectures. Have ther Jesuit schls hsted the perfrmer/speaker n campus? If s, hw did the event g at ther Jesuit campuses? What was the respnse frm the student bdy and thers? Refer t the full Plicy at

6 Hw d yu distinguish between what the speaker/perfrmer has dne/said in the past versus what will be said in the cntent f yur prpsed event? What guidelines will yur rganizatin prvide perfrmer/ speaker s they knw the fcus f the event? Hw will yu explain the fcus f the event in yur marketing materials s it is clear what the purpse f the event is t the campus cmmunity and public? If an entertainment perfrmer des yur grup need t cnsider asking fr radi/tv edited versins f the perfrmance? (examples: sngs that are edited by artists t play n radi statins r perfrmances that are edited fr bradcast televisin) Cnsider annuncing the frmat fr the prgram prir t the speaker intrductin. Tell the audience what they can expect, such as hw questins will be handled and if fllw-up questins will be allwed. Cnsider what cmmunicatin can be prvided at the beginning f the prgram (e.g.; written ntice in prgram, verbal annuncement just befre intrducing the speaker, etc.). Sample statement included belw. During the review prcess yur student rganizatin may be asked t read the statement at the beginning f the event. In additin, the University may require the spnsring persn r rganizatin t include the Refer t the full Plicy at

7 statement in all prgram publicity, annuncements, r press releases. The views expressed by speakers, presenters, r thers wh participate in this prgram d nt imply apprval r endrsement by the spnsring grup r by Saint Luis University. Is the speaker/presenter/etc. assciated with a plitical party r a plitician? Representatives frm the Student Invlvement Center, Student Gvernment Assciatin, and the Office f General Cunsel have cnvened t discuss hw the University will handle plitical r electin related speakers during Electin cycles. As a University wh receives funding frm the Federal Gvernment, we must adhere t specific guidelines as t hw and in what manner we are allwed t hst pliticians r thse wh represent r wuld ptentially prmte ne plitical party r candidate ver the ther. Saint Luis University is a 501(c)(3) charitable rganizatin and will nt endrse r ppse any candidate r candidates fr elected public ffice.
