3 Presentation Abstracts Presentation #1: SMS is Now Mandatory for DB2 V10! SMS Best Practices for DB2 Abstract: Confused about SMS? Do your Storage Administrators intimidate you when discussing how to best use SMS for DB2? Not sure if your company is conforming to best practices for SMS and DB2? Come and understand what SMS means and how to relate your DB2 needs to the Storage Administrators. This topic will be delivered as a fullmorning session at MDUG and is derived from the presenter's full-day workshop on SMS Best Practices for DB2. Presentation #2: DSN1LOGP It could save your job one day Abstract: Every shop does not have the funds available to purchase a log processing tool. However, every shop does have the DSN1LOGP utility which is distributed with DB2. In an emergency, knowing how to use this tool to understand what has happened on your DB2 system to enable you to recover from whatever situation may just save your job. After a brief discussion concerning the contents and information held within the DB2 log, details of the syntax and usage of DSN1LOGP will be presented. This will be followed with examples of how to interpret DSN1LOGP output for auditing and recovery purposes. Presentation #3: DB2 10 Hash Access: Access Path or Collision Course? Abstract: Hash Access is a new DB2 10 access path which could reduce the number of GETPAGE requests for a random access. But not all table spaces are candidates for this new feature. This presentation will cover the internals of hash organization and compare it to the index and table structures we are all used to. Then, we will discuss tips on how to determine which table spaces are good candidates and provide some rules of thumb on how to best define your hashing structures. We will also look at some performance statistics. Speaker Biographies John Iczkovits (IBM) John Iczkovits is a Consulting IT Specialist with IBM Advanced Technical Skills. If you need an invoice for the year, MDUG at admin@mdug.org, and one will be ed to you. 4. Group Support Volunteers are the heart of any non-profit group. This is especially true for MDUG. Without volunteers to handle the affairs of the group, the group wouldn t exist. Group membership fees only provide enough income to cover the costs for holding the seminars, and others things such as the web site and the PO Box, which are required for the group s operation. There isn t enough income to pay someone to find speakers, pay bills, coordinate activities, etc. As always MDUG needs more volunteers to keep operating. Volunteering is a good way to find out more about the group operations and expand your skills. If you can volunteer to support the group s activities next year, please let us know. Many of the support activities can be done from your home or desk and many do not take more then a few hours a month. Even MDUG Board meetings can be done from your desk, as all meetings are held via telecom. And supporting the group allows you to attend the seminars at no cost. A few of the areas where you could help out are: supporting the web site, taking reservations, suggesting topics/speakers, management of the group s, group coordination, providing onsite support at the seminar, handling evaluations, and speaker introductions. We hope you will talk to one of the red ribbon wearers at the seminar about MDUG December 2011

7 how you can volunteer or send an with your contact information to asking where you can help out or just that you want to discuss volunteering with someone on the board. We will get back to you. 5. Increase in Membership Fees for 2012 Due to increased costs for the seminars, MDUG is looking into increasing membership fees by 10% in 2012 as well as looking into additional ways to lower expenses. At the December seminar, additional details on the income and expenses will be provided. MDUG December 2011
