2 Retail Module 1 Find out about retail Identifying different types of retail outlets (internet website, market stall), identifying named examples of each outlet type (for example, buyitnow.co.uk, Borough Road Market), the type of product sold (for example, books, vegetables), additional services offered by retailers (for example, next day delivery, reduced prices for buying in bulk) and the different job roles people do (for example, merchandiser, buyer) 1. Identify at least six different types of retail outlet 2. Identify one named example for each type of retail outlet and the type of products sold 3. Identify at least two additional services offered by two of the retail outlets identified 4. Identify three different job roles in retail Carry out a survey of local retail outlets including supermarkets, local shops, retail parks, specialist shops, markets Investigate different shopping websites and the products sold Interview retail staff about their jobs Retail Module 2 is about: must show that you can: Select and find out about a job role in retail Selecting and finding out about a job role in retail (for example, store detective, market trader), the key tasks, training/qualifications, personal skills, clothing and usual working pattern 1. Select a job role in retail to find out about 2. Identify three key tasks of this job role 3. Identify appropriate training and/or qualifications for this job role 4. Identify personal skills useful for this job role 5. Identify appropriate clothing for this job role and the reason/s for wearing it 6. Identify the usual working pattern for this job role Visit a retail outlet and interview staff about their job roles Attend a talk given by someone who is familiar with job roles in retail Use the internet and careers information to find out about job roles in retail

3 Retail Module 3 Replenish stock Following instructions to replenish stock (packets of biscuits onto a particular shelf, blouses onto a clothes rail in size order), handling stock in a way that minimises risks to yourself and others (for example, use approved lifting techniques, keep aisles as clear as possible), handling stock in a way that protects the stock (for example, load boxes squarely onto a pallet lifter, ensure clothes on hangers are secure on the rail), cleaning and tidying the work area when you have finished (for example, return surplus stock to the correct position in the store room, collect packaging and return to the recycling area) and checking with an appropriate person that each task has been completed to the required standard On two different days: 1. Follow instructions to replenish stock 2. Handle stock in a way that minimises the risks to yourself and others 3. Handle stock in a way that protects the stock 4. Clean and tidy the work area when you have finished 5. Confirm that each task has been completed to the required standard Replenish confectionary on a counter display Replenish a chilled cabinet with soft drinks Replenish a clothes display with particular sizes/colours Replenish greetings cards on a display stand

4 Retail Module 4 Process donated goods for resale Sorting donated goods for resale by type (for example, women s tops, men s trousers, toys), labelling goods appropriately for resale (for example, sticky label with price and size), identifying goods which cannot be resold and the reason/s why (for example, torn clothing), identifying goods which need to be cleaned, tidied or repaired (for example, wash, iron, mend box corners with sticky tape), cleaning, tidying and repairing goods, following safe working practices and checking with an appropriate person that each task has been completed to the required standard On two different days: 1. Sort donated goods for resale by type 2. Label goods appropriately for resale 3. Identify goods which cannot be resold and the reason/s why 4. Identify goods which need to be cleaned, tidied or repaired 5. Clean, tidy or repair at least one item 6. Work in a way that minimises the risks to yourself and others 7. Confirm that each task has been completed to the required standard Sort clothing in a charity shop Sort items for sale at a charity car boot sale Sort items for a charity sale on an auction web site

5 Retail Module 5 Look after customers in retail Demonstrating appropriate behaviour with customers, presenting the right personal image, making a good first impression, showing willingness and asking for help when needed to provide customer service 1. Follow the dress code of the organisation 2. Greet customers politely 3. Respond willingly to routine requests from customers 4. Ask for help from a colleague when needed to provide customer service 5. Thank customers for their business Supervise the changing rooms Help carry a customer s shopping to their car Show customers where the items that they are looking for are displayed Serve customers
