1 Data Science and Business Analytics Certificate Data Science and Business Intelligence Certificate Descriptin The Helzberg Schl f Management has launched tw graduate-level certificates: ne in Data Science and Business Analytics and ne in Data Science and Business Intelligence. The prgrams examine techniques fr predictive and descriptive mdeling using cncepts that integrate statistics, cmputer science and business strategy. These six-curse certificate prgrams help students mve beynd Excel and standard SQL reprting, helping them create predictive mdels and dynamic dashbards. Students will als wrk with large data sets and mine textual data frm scial media and websites. All f these technical skills will be delivered with the idea f slving a business prblem. Cmmunicatin f technical mdels t a nn-technical audience will be emphasized in each class. Psitin in the Market Based n McKinsey Institute s analysis there will be a shrtfall f 140,000 t 190,000 candidates with deep analytical talent, plus a need fr an additinal 1.5 millin data savvy managers by The Helzberg data science certificates are designed t fall between what an emplyee wuld receive by attending a series f ne r tw day prfessinal wrkshps and what they wuld receive by cmpleting a specialty master s degree in analytics (MS in Analytics, MS in Predictive Analytics, etc.). Audience Business analysts, bth new and experienced in their industry, wh wish t leverage their business knwledge alngside analytic techniques as they mve frm traditinal reprting and analysis t mre advanced analytics. Cmputer science prfessinals wh need mre experience wrking with statistical and predictive analytics mdels. Prfessinals trained in statistics r ther quantitative disciplines that have nt wrked with large data sets r in an applicatin beynd Excel. Individuals wh are mtivated t learn the fast grwing field f data science. Certificate Design The Helzberg graduate certificates in Data Science and Business Analytics r Data Science and Business Intelligence will be cmpsed f six curses, which meet ne night a week fr eight weeks each. A student wuld typically take ne curse per 8-week sessin. The student wuld cmplete the graduate certificate prgram in abut 15 mnths. 1

2 We have tw certificates based upn the student s interests and gals: ne that ges mre in depth in Data Science and Business Analytics (DS-BA) and ne that ges mre in depth in Data Science and Business Intelligence (DS-BI). The DS-BA certificate ges further in depth int the technical skills f data science (this is what McKinsey calls Deep Analytical Talent ). The DS-BI certificate, while preparing students t mve beynd Excel and enhance their technical skills, als prepares them t wrk mre at a prject and strategic level (this is what McKinsey calls data-savvy managers). Curriculum Outline Students in the certificate prgrams will take a minimum f 12 credit hurs. Each certificate includes a cmmn cre and specializatin track, bth cmprised f six credit hurs. Curse descriptins fr each curse are included later in this dcument. Typical Curse Design Each 8-week cllege credit curse will be taught in a wrkshp frmat. In each class, a new dataset and methd will be used t further understand the valuable infrmatin cntained in the data. Students will bring their laptps and wrk alng with the instructr t get the mst frm the sessins, gaining hands-n experience as they cmplete weekly prjects. All classes will begin with presenting a business questin r prblem, learning the apprpriate applicatins and methdlgies fr answering the questin, learning t cmmunicate the data and results t a nn-technical audience and discussing hw the results can be integrated int an rganizatin s strategy. Mst classes will have a final prject (nt exam), similar t an analysis prepared fr an rganizatin. The student is encuraged t use their wn cmpany s data fr each prject. Certificate Prerequisites The student is required t have: -Cmpleted an accredited bachelr s degree. -A basic statistics curse thrugh regressin. -Have sme expsure t prgramming cncepts via a curse r jb experiencespecially wrking in a cding r scripting envirnment. -Basic knwledge f SQL. -BUS6311S Intrductin t R fr Data Analysis and BUS6311S (.5 cr) can be taken during the prgram fr students wh d nt have basic skills in this language. -(Business Analytics Track Only) BUS6312S Intrductin t Pythn fr Data Analysis (.5 cr) can be taken during the prgram fr students wh d nt have basic skills in this language. If a student feels they need a refresher in any f the abve, they shuld cntact the prgram directr (myles.gartland@rckhurst.edu) wh can recmmend several ptins that can be cmpleted prir t beginning the prgram. Sftware expsure in prgram The certificate prgram will be taught using many f the cmmn (typically pen-surce) tls f data science. They include: R & RStudi Pythn with Pandas 1 Tableau MicrStrategy Ggle Analytics MySQL/Oracle Hwever, if a cmpany uses a different prgram fr analysis (SAS r SPSS) they are welcme t use it instead fr hmewrk and prjects. Technlgy Each class sessin, students will need t bring a laptp capable f dwnlading and running the sftware listed abve. The laptp als needs the capability f accessing the university s wireless internet. The laptp may be a Windws, Mac r Linux. It is highly recmmended that the laptp be using a mre recent perating system (i.e. Windws 7 and abve r Mac 10.8 r abve) and have at least 4GB f RAM. Higher amunts f RAM (8 GB r mre) are als recmmended. 1 Pythn will be a required prficiency fr students in the DS- BA track. It will be ptinal fr thse in the DS- BI track. 3

4 Cst, Dates and Credits These curses will meet in the Helzberg Schl f Management, Cnway Hall, at Rckhurst University. The tuitin fr the certificate prgram is $1,260 per 8-week curse at rates. Fr persnal r crprate budgeting, the ttal cst f the prgram is estimated t be less than $9,000 including all tuitin, fees, curse materials, and ther incidentals. With the average cst f a full master s degree arund $40,000, the data science certificates are very affrdable ptins t btain significant educatin in this emerging area. Additinally, at $1,300 per 8-week class, the curses are als mre ecnmical than many ne and tw day wrkshps. At the end f the prgram, students are eligible t receive a graduate certificate frm the Helzberg Schl f Management and Rckhurst University. Each curse cmpleted will be n the student s Rckhurst University transcript and the student will have earned 12 graduate credit hurs frm the Helzberg Schl f Management. Under certain cnditins, many f the credit hurs can be applied t the pursuit f a Helzberg Schl MBA degree. 5 Curse Descriptins BUS 6300 Business Intelligence (2) Business leaders must have the ability t cllect and interpret infrmatin cncerning custmers, suppliers, and cmpetitrs, and t make decisins that affect their cmpany's perfrmance. Business Intelligence is a set f methdlgies, prcesses, architectures, and technlgies that transfrms raw data int meaningful and useful infrmatin used t enable mre effective strategic, tactical, and peratinal insights and decisin-making with an emphasis n knwledge management. Using the case study apprach in cmbinatin with cntemprary sftware tls, students will apply the cncepts f business prcess analysis, quality cntrl and imprvement, perfrmance mnitring thrugh perfrmance dashbards and balanced screcards and prcess simulatin. BUS6301S Applied Data Mining (2) The curse prvides a cmprehensive verview f data mining techniques used t realize unseen patterns, including traditinal statistical analysis and machine learning techniques. Students will analyze large datasets and develp mdeling slutins t supprt decisin making in varius dmains such as healthcare, finance, security, marketing, and custmer relatinship management (CRM). Mdels will include decisin trees, clustering, classificatin, k-means, neural nets, supprt vectr machines, ensemble methds and ther supervised and unsupervised predictive mdels primarily fr structured data. Students will als learn hw t apply these mdels int prductin thrugh business rules and SQL. Statistics and expsure t any prgramming language is required. The primary sftware tls fr this class will be R and Pythn 1. Prerequisite BUS6311S Intrductin t R fr Data Analysis. BUS6302S Data Visualizatin (2) This curse is abut the interactive explratin f data, and hw it is achieved using state-f-the-art data visualizatin sftware. Students will be able t present cmplex quantitative and qualitative data visually. Participants will learn t explre a range f different data types and structures. They will learn abut varius interactive techniques fr manipulating and examining the data and prducing effective visualizatins. Participants will be guided thrugh an explratin f quantitative business data t discern meaningful patterns, trends, relatinships, and exceptins that reveal business perfrmance, ptential prblems and pprtunities. Data visualizatin is bth an art and a science. It is an art cncerned with unleashing creativity and innvatin, designing cmmunicatins that appeal n an aesthetic level and survive in the mind n an emtinal ne. Statistics and expsure t any prgramming language is required. The primary sftware tl fr this class will be Tableau. R and Pythn 1 will als be incrprated. Prerequisite BUS6300. BUS6303S Predictive Mdels (2) The curse will teach advanced statistical techniques t discver infrmatin and build predictive mdels frm large sets f data. Emphasis is place n applicatins fr marketing research and peratins. Methds will include multiple and lgistic regressin, prpensity mdels principal cmpnent analysis, market basket analysis, lngitudinal 1 Pythn will be a required prficiency fr students in the decisin science track. BUS6304S Text Mining (2) This curse will intrduce the essential techniques f text mining, understd as the extensin f data mining's standard predictive methds t unstructured text. Students will als learn web scraping techniques and cllectin f unstructured data frm scial media sites like Twitter, as well as a cmpany web site. An intrductin t prcessing images will als be included. Students will als be intrduced t sentiment analysis and natural language prcessing. Statistics and expsure t any prgramming language is required. The primary sftware tl fr this class will be Pythn & R. Tableau will als be incrprated. Applied data Mining is recmmended prir t taking this curse. Prerequisites BUS6301, BUS6311, BUS6312 r cnsent f the Prgram Directr. BUS6305S Preparatin and Analysis fr Big Data (2) This curse will emphasize the extractin, transfrmatin and preparatin f data frm traditinal relatinal databases as well as mre cmplex strage systems (such as Hadp) fr analytical purpses. Students will be intrduced t data wrangling, munging and scraping f bth structured and unstructured data. Students will als be intrduced t parallel prcess fr big data such as map reduce and query languages like HIVE. Expsure t any prgramming language is required. The primary sftware tl fr this class will be Pythn as well as access t a standard ratinal database (Oracle r Mysql) and a Hadp system. BUS6306S Web and Scial Media Analytics (2) The primary fcus f the curse is the applicatin f descriptive and predictive techniques t web analytics and ther scial media platfrms including user behavir mdeling and e-metrics fr business intelligence. Students will als wrk with Ggle analytics and ther web based analytical platfrms t judge perfrmance and ROI f a cmpany s web and scial media prgrams. The primary sftware tl fr this class will be Ggle Analytics and ther web based tls. Prerequisite BUS6300, BUS6301 and BUS6302 r cnsent f the Prgram Directr. BUS6307S Dashbard Creatin and Implementatin (2) This curse prvides instructin fr creating analyses and dashbards in business intelligence applicatins. Students will begin by building basic analyses t include in dashbards, with mre cmplexity as the curse prgresses. Emphasis is placed using the prper metrics and ways t display them fr different users. Dashbards will be built fr implementatin n bth desktps as well as tablet devices. Students will als identify KPIs and hw they may be used acrss different levels f the rganizatin. Examples include human resurces, recruiting, sales, peratins, security, infrmatin technlgy, prject management, custmer relatinship management and many mre departmental dashbards. Students will als be intrduced t analytical strategy mdels like the balanced screcard. The primary sftware tl fr this class will be MicrStrategy. 7 BUS6308S Analytics and Strategy (2) The fcus f this class is the implementatin f analytics as a cmpetitive advantage acrss the enterprise. In this curse, students will read case studies and hear frm guest speakers abut challenges and pprtunities generated by the advent f big data. Students will make grup presentatins and write critical respnse papers related t these case studies. Students will cnsider sme f the traditinal business framewrks (e.g., SWOT analysis) fr evaluating the strategic pprtunities available t a cmpany in the big data space.
