JUNE 2017 Your free guide to the latest developments in social media and online marketing

There are many changes that happen in the online world each month, and the GU Crew are here to help keep you on top of the latest developments with our monthly bulletin. FACEBOOK FACEBOOK EXTENDS REACTIONS TO DESKTOP I am not sure why this has taken so long to roll out, but I am glad that it is finally here. To add reactions to friends posts on the desktop version, simply hover over the like button to reveal the reaction. FACEBOOK IS PENALISING WEBSITES THAT HAVE ADVERTS According to an article on Techcrunch, Facebook are now penalising websites that are hosting terrible adverts on their site. If your site is flooded with spammy type advertising, then it s time to rethink your strategy if you want good reach on your links from Facebook. (Good call Facebook!) FACEBOOK INTRODUCE PAGE PREFERRED AUDIENCE PER POST There have been lots of interesting developments for Facebook this month, but this one certainly made think oh, I can use this. It will also give you more reach as you are teaching Facebook what type of audience you would like the update to be fed to. Simply click on status update when you are in your company page and target the post. Whilst you are there, experiment with the other icons. (Especially tag products!) FACEBOOK VIDEO COVER IMAGES ARE HERE! You can now upload a video, rather than a static image as your Facebook cover. I really love this idea, although as I type it has not been rolled out to everyone yet. I am looking forward to seeing some creative videos in the very near future. To find out if your page has this feature you will see an icon of a camera and then an icon of a video camera flashing in the top left hand corner of your current image.

LINKEDIN A REMARKETING GUIDE FOR LINKEDIN In early May, LinkedIn announced that you can now remarket (or re-target) on LinkedIn. Social Media Examiner was quick on the ball and have uploaded a guide for remarketing on LinkedIn already. Visit the site here: TWITTER TWITTER NOW SUPPORTS EMOJI IN SEARCH Instagram have been supporting emoji search for a while, but Twitter quietly introduced the feature where you can search for Tweets from an emoji, or a username with an emoji in May. I didn t realise that you can have Emojis in a username - so I learned something new!

INSTAGRAM INSTAGRAM PODCAST SERIES HAS BEEN LAUNCHED I have downloaded the new Instagram podcast as I find that learning whilst in the car or walking the dog is a great use of my time. Facebook IQ have released a new four-part series as a Podcast to learn about The Power of Passions on Instagram. If listening is not your thing, then you can print a version of the podcast and read it instead. INSTAGRAM STORIES INTRODUCE FACE FILTERS We knew it was coming but we were not sure when it would happen. Finally, Instagram introduces face filters, which is the one thing that SnapChat do brilliantly. The Instagram filters are not quite up to Snapchat standards (no sticking your tongue out yet!) but it is a starting point. If they do get more creative then I suspect they will make a dent in the younger audience from SnapChat, which is Facebook s main objective. YOUTUBE YOUTUBE ARE PREVIEWING A NEW LOOK According to an article on Social Times, YouTube users are getting a preview of the Google-owned video sites new design, which includes a dark theme to help reduce glare while users are watching videos. YOUTUBE DROPS SUBSCRIPTION LEVEL FOR LIVE STREAMING Did you know that you need to have a certain number of subscribers to your YouTube Channel before you can go live on this platform? It used to be 10,000 subscribers, which was reduced in April 2017 to There were reports in early May 2017 that Google has now dropped this all together, so you no longer need subscribers to go live. But if you have no subscribers then who is going to see your content anyway? People do not get notified when you go live on YouTube in the same way that they do on Facebook, and people tend not to hang out as much on YouTube. So my favourite platform is still Facebook for live streaming.

TOOL OF THE MONTH! ECAMM LIVE (for Mac OS) I have discovered a new tool where you can stream live to Facebook, sharing your screen, showing a video, add a talking head, and images/branding all in one place. Now one of the reasons why I love this app is that there is no finding your live stream key and you can also see the comments as they happen within the software. The sad news is that this is a Mac Only application (yey, for Mac owners!).

BOOK OF THE MONTH LEADERS EAT LAST WHY SOME TEAMS PULL TOGETHER AND OTHERS DON T BY SIMON SINEK I m a Simon Sinek convert! I loved his first book Start with Why, but I found this book even more inspiring. The way he explains about how our biology works, alongside how the different chemicals released makes us feel - it just all makes sense. I ve taken away loads from this book about how I run my business. Even though I run a digital marketing business, I appreciate the importance of human contact and face to face meetings. Caring for my team is as important as caring for our customers and I will not take them for granted. There is a big difference between a manager and a leader. Which one are you? 7 YOUR TWITTER FIVE A DAY Being active on Twitter multiple times a day is essential. Below is a daily checklist of the five main activities that we would recommend. CUT OUT AND KEEP CHECKLIST 1. Schedule a minimum of four tweets using a tool such as eclincher or Hootsuite. 2. Check your Twitter lists as well as your homefeed and engage with your target audience 3. Post real, live information every day. Where are you going? What has happened in the office? 4. Check Twitter Moments and Trending content. Tweeting popular content will guarantee you extra followers. 5. React to your notifications. Thank those who shared your content. Say Hi to your new followers. Always have the last word! If you are struggling with content ideas, then feel free to download this ebook 75 ideas of things to post Ideally you should spend no more than 30 mins a day on Twitter. It is easy to get distracted on this platform, therefore set a timer, or just be aware of the Oh this is shiny syndrome
