3 TM Event Agenda Day One 8:00 a.m. 9:00 a.m. Registration and Continental Breakfast 9:00 a.m. 9:15 a.m. Welcome and Opening Remarks 9:15 a.m. 10:30 a.m. State of the Legal Market Challenges for Long-term Growth and Short-term Profitability As the legal market emerges from the worst economic downturn of the past several decades, law firm leaders face the dilemma of how to make the kinds of investments needed to remain competitive in today s rapidly changing market while, at the same time, preserving short-term profitability at acceptable levels. In this session, two veteran observers of the US legal market will present an overview of the current status of the market, focusing particularly on the near-term financial challenges that firms will continue to face in a period of slow demand growth and on the kinds of longer-term investments that will be important for success in the new buyer s market for legal services. This presentation will be followed by comments from a panel of experienced COOs, representing firms of different size and market position. 10:30 a.m. 11:00 a.m. Break 11:00 a.m. 12:30 p.m. Divergent Strategies for Long-term Growth One Size No Longer Fits All One of the clear messages emerging from the dramatic shifts now occurring in the legal market is that there is no one right model for long-term success. In a market that is rapidly segmenting and in which clients are applying widely varying standards to determine efficiency and cost effectiveness in the delivery of legal services, key success factors will vary from practice to practice and from one industry to another. In terms of law firm strategy, one size no longer fits all assuming that it ever really did. In this program segment, COOs representing firms from quite different market segments will describe how their firms are approaching their markets and the different strategies that they are using to differentiate themselves from their competitors. 1:30 p.m. 3:45 p.m. Leading in a Time of Economic Uncertainty A Case Study John J. Gabarro, UPS Foundation Professor of Human Resource Management, Emeritus in Organizational Behavior, Harvard Business School To navigate successfully the uncertain waters of economic change over the next few years, to balance the need for long-term investment with the competing imperatives of maintaining short-term profitability, and to manage effectively the expectations of partners and other stakeholders, law firm managers will require consummate leadership skills particularly the skills of change management. In this program segment, Professor Jack Gabarro of the Harvard Business School will guide Forum attendees through a case study designed to challenge conventional assumptions and provide insights into successful organizational leadership strategies during times of economic uncertainty. 3:45 p.m. 4:15 p.m. Break The Leader in Law Firm Time Capture 4:15 p.m. 5:30 p.m. The Promise and Threats of Emerging Technologies Closely related to the innovative strategies being implemented by many firms to drive efficiency and cost effectiveness in the delivery of legal services is the creative use of technology to support those strategies. Indeed, it is no exaggeration to say that, without the significant technological advances of recent years, many of the most promising efforts to re-imagine and redesign legal work processes would not be possible. At the same time, the emerging technologies and particularly the growing prevalence and use of social media have created significant new risks that require careful management. In this session, market leaders in the management of these emerging technologies will talk candidly about both the promise and the threats they pose for law firms both now and in the future. 5:30 p.m. 6:30 p.m. Networking Reception 12:30 p.m. 1:30 p.m. Networking Lunch
