We had to do something special and so we did! Abu Dhabi National Paper Mill (ADNPM)

Erkan Tirnavali, General Manager, Aktül Kagit The 2 great mosque in Abu Dhabi is an appreciated tourist attraction.

Abu Dhabi: A tourist destination with a quality demand as a driver What does it take to differentiate from competition, build a new market segment and provide product quality to satisfy your customers? For Abu Dhabi National Paper Mill (ADNPM) the answer can be spelled Flexibility. Flexibility to produce premium quality, plain and textured tissue with basis weight in the range of gsm, produced by virgin or recycled fiber at low energy consumption. How they did it? They put their bet on the new Advantage NTT technology, hard work and dedication. And it paid off. Abu Dhabi is the capital in United Arab Emirates with a population of around one million people of which more than 80% are foreign workers. Today Abu Dhabi is an appreciated tourist destination with a huge amount of five star hotels aiming only for high quality consumer products. The quality demand is a strong driver also for the tissue industry. Tissue products are typically very soft, 2-ply facial products. Facial, which is the absolute biggest product in this market, is used for all kind of purposes, as handkerchiefs, for the body, for the face or for wiping and cleaning. Tough competition At the same time Abu Dhabi is a place where tissue producers from neighboring countries sell their overcapacity so the competition is tough. Recently the energy prices have raised dramatically which also impact the tissue production in the country. In the light of these conditions there are a couple of questions still to be answered: what does it take to differentiate from competition, build a new market segment and provide product quality to satisfy the customers? Endless possibilitys with Advantage NTT technology For Abu Dhabi National Paper Mill (ADNPM) the answer was the new flexible Advantage NTT tissue making technology. A technology that provides the opportunity to produce whatever their customers need. Like the very soft paper with high bulk, typically requested by the premium segment of the market. It also gives almost endless possibilities to develop new products or combinations of paper grades. 4 Helmut Berger is General Manager for ADNPM. The belt gives endless possibilities to design your own design and your own product. Competitive and flexible with Advantage NTT technology ADNPM started their first tissue machine in 2002 and the second in After a fire in 2008 which destroyed the converting plant, they decided to focus on production of jumbo rolls. Velvet is ADNPM s own brand for facial tissue. At the time when ADNPM decided to invest in PM 3 the increasing competition from China, Indonesia, India and other countries forced ADNPM to look for new ways to differentiate to be competitive. And the choice fell on the Advantage NTT technology from Valmet. Helmut Berger, General Manager, ADNPM elaborates on the reason for selecting the Advantage NTT machine: We had to do something special! We wanted to get a competitive advantage and with the NTT machine we got flexibility. Another must, was to be able to produce facial products. At that time, nobody had considered the potential to produce facial with the NTT machine so we made a test on Valmet s pilot machine. The result was very promising as the facial product turned out to be very soft. Together with the flexibility, that was the biggest arguments for us to invest in the NTT technology. The belt is the secret The secret behind the flexibility is the belt. Operating with a plain belt gives a tissue like what can be produced with the Advantage DCT machines but with slightly higher softness and more bulk. The NTT machine is really fantastic, with all its possibilities. We have customers who only wants products from the NTT machine even produced with the plain belt as they need the bulk. This is especially important for producers of facial softpack products where the consumers actually can see the higher bulk. The fine belt is fantastic for toilet paper and gives 20% higher bulk compared to conventional machines. With the coarse belt, we can produce strong, textured kitchen or towel tissue with much higher bulk and water absorbency. The beauty is that we can make it without any reduction in speed. Compared to woven fabrics the NTT belt provides the possibility to develop own design of belt patterns meeting every specific need, something Mr. Berger has tested and is offering their customers. 4 I see a big opportunity for customers to produce tissue with their own logo or other special designed patterns. Helmut Berger, General Manager

Determine product features ADNPM s NTT machine was the third to start-up in the world and the first in Middle East. To launch something new and different to the market is not a natural success, it is also a challenge. It becomes a more One technical of the sale main where reasons you must for Aktül s discuss about the possibilities of the paper machine and the opportunities for a tissue successful maker to deliver operations different is as types said before of tissue qualities. the tissue machine itself and the Advantage Maximum ViscoNip flexibility press in particular. One The big flexible advantage pressing is that technology we can produce paper from recycled fibers that is much softer than normal. But the big impact makes is that we it possible have much to play more with flexibility softnesscling bulk, paper tensile, or virgin fiber pulp and energy no problem, we can mix if we want. We can make sandwich paper, or 2-ply products with than in an ordinary machine. Basis weight from gsm is not a problem, recy- consumption. one conventional The and nip one load textured is adjusted paper so we have an unbelievable range of possibilities. with respect to grade specifications. 5

Great possibilities The machine is fantastic The machine is running stable at a speed of m/min in textured mode. They can produce more than 120 tons per day depending on the grade. This 2,8-meter-wide machine is fantastic. I don t see any other machine in this size that can run this big range of products at such high capacity. Without the grade changes, it is possible to run up to 180 tons per day at high grammage. By the big diameter of the Yankee (5,5 m) and the high load of the shoepress, we don t see any speed limitations due to the dryness. There is no machine except NTT that can make that. Big increase in energycost What ADNPM didn t know when they decided to go for the NTT machine was the big increase in energy cost that the authorities announced in November 2016 for the new year Something that of course greatly affect the production cost. With all facts on hand the selection of NTT with its low energy consumption, was a lucky draw. ADNPM s customers have traditionally come from the GCC market, i.e., Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain Qatar, Kuwait, and the UAE. South Africa is another big market. The number one product in GCC countries is facial which counts for more than 60% of the production. Number two is towel and napkins while toilet tissue mostly is produced for countries outside GCC. The Advantage NTT technology has opened doors to new markets for ADNPM. In addition to the GCC countries, they sell both plain and textured tissue to Europe today. Asia is another market they have high hopes for as their consumers appreciate the typical soft paper ADNPM are offering. Good learning There are lots of possibilities but our customers must understand them. Today we can provide a wider product range than our competitors in the local market. It gives us the chance to get customers which we normally never could supply. But it has also been a good learning for us. We have learnt to produce tissue in many ways. Today we have a flexible production where we can provide jumbo rolls from virgin, recycled or mixed pulp, with all kind of softness and elongation. We don t use chemicals in the pulp, the energy consumption is low and we can meet different customer demands from different regions. ADNPM has for sure succeeded to differentiate from competition, build a new market segment and provide product quality to satisfy their customers. Helmut Berger, Gaber Hamid and Johan Björn, Valmet are checking the softness. The screen shows the machine speed of m/min in plain mode. Helmut Berger is taking active part in the daily work on the machine and is often seen in the control room adjusting some parameters or checking the process. 6
