1 Date: 16 March 2015 Author: Florian Pottrick Added value with PFERD After ergonomics comes efficiency PFERD develops a new umbrella strategy and opens up untapped potential Marienheide, 16 March At the Cologne Hardware Fair, PFERD publicly promoted the topic of "ergonomics in grinding" for the first time. This manufacturer of quality tools for metalworking has an in-depth knowledge of the ergonomic properties of grinding tools on which it can rely; however, there are still only a few solutions to these problems. At that time, under the title "PFERDERGONOMICS ", PFERD defined the four main hazards when working with grinding tools: Vibration, noise, dust and physical strain. There was great interest in PFERDERGONOMICS ; the Marienheide manufacturer became the first in the industry to break the taboo and focus on the long-known side effects related to the use of grinding tools. Moreover, PFERD offered analyses of work processes, put forward suggestions on how the burdens on health could be reduced and presented innovative products to avoid the most common hazards. In retrospect, PFERD opened up an entirely new perspective on the abrasives industry and grinding: Where previously only the performance of the tools mattered - strictly enumerated, weighed and measured - nowadays a clear development towards more comfortable solutions offering greater health protection can be identified. This was a trend on which large parts of the industry soon focused. Today, in the relevant journals, hardly any advertisements are published that do not refer to the ergonomic parameters of both product and operator. PFERD now offers a comprehensive product line of ergonomically optimized tools. While many other companies in the industry are still looking to establish their positioning in the area of ergonomics, PFERD is already moving on

"We want to go further in this direction and offer our customers added value," says Stefan Braun. "Where PFERDERGONOMICS concerned itself simply with the ergonomic factors relating to the use of abrasives, now PFERDEFFICIENCY addresses the efficiency and thus the sustainability of processes," adds the PFERD director, explaining the new strategy. [Overview: PFERDVALUE, PFERDEFFICIENCY, PFERDERGONOMICS ] Efficiency and sustainability arise from saving costs while simultaneously increasing productivity. One of the challenges facing many users everyday is that tasks have to be accomplished in an ever shorter time with the best possible results and the minimum necessary use of resources. "The efficiency of the tools used is thus determined not only from the short-term work results, but also from how the long-term use of these tools impacts on people, on the machine and on the processes in the plant," continues Braun, explaining the complexities. Therefore, in addition to the well-known PFERDERGONOMICS factors, PFERD have defined four further topics that provide guidance to the user in terms of the efficiency of the solutions selected: EnergySaving Energy consumption (electricity/compressed air) of tools and drives during day-to-day use represents a significant cost factor. Tools and tool drives that consume less power or which can be used on smaller drives with the same or better performance because of their smaller dimensions provide cost benefits. WasteSaving Waste is ever present in various guises in the plant. Whether it is of a single type, recyclable or even residual or hazardous waste - the waste generated leads to cost and effort. Operating tools which have similar or

KG, Marienheide Page 3 of 7 better stock removal or cutting performance with less mass of product or with an above-average tool life causes less waste. TimeSaving Time is money and thus also represents an important economic factor. Tools and tool drives which, for example, arrive at the desired result through higher aggressiveness or faster performance, or products that can eliminate unproductive idle times such as tool change or set-up times, save both time and money. This also applies to tooling solutions which make the job easier and thus enable longer periods of fatigue-free work. ResourceSaving High savings can be achieved through optimal and efficient use of existing resources. It is important to consider not only the manufacturing process of a product, but also the entire life cycle - from the initial product idea to the end of use. According to PFERD, investigations with power tools have shown that by far the largest proportion of the resources relating to the use of tools are consumed by the end users. The people forming the workforce are also a key resource. The performance of users is crucial to productivity in the on-going process and must therefore be maintained as much as possible. PFERD tooling solutions that enable economical handling of the resources of energy and time and also avoid waste are marked with the "EnergySaving", "TimeSaving" and "WasteSaving" pictograms. If they benefit from one or more PFERDERGONOMICS advantages, they also carry the "ResourceSaving" pictogram. When employed by users, they are particularly economical, protect their health and maintain performance.

In addition, the detection of further potential savings is one of our most important goals and forms the basis for the sustained development of more efficient products," summarizes Stefan Braun. "Through PFERDEFFICIENCY and PFERDERGONOMICS we are generating measurable added value for our customers. At PFERD we call this added value PFERDVALUE," continues Stefan Braun. It has been established that optimizing work processes through the use of powerful premium tools and drives has a very positive impact on economic value in the plant. "In the long term, to be cost-effective is to be sustainable," says Braun, describing the findings and developments of the last few years. At PFERD it is known that this optimization of working conditions and processes in terms of ergonomics and efficiency can be complex. "That's why we offer our assistance to the advisory trade," states Stefan Braun. "Together with our trade partners, we visit users on-site." With "VALUECHECK", the tools and drives used are considered in terms of both hazards and efficiency, directly at the workplace. Thus, the user receives a detailed technical assessment and an evaluation that shows him the potential for improvement. In addition, PFERD works with independent testing institutes which are able to carry out detailed measurements and subsequent scientific analysis of ergonomics and efficiency in the workplace. All the loads and weaknesses are very precisely analyzed and documented. "As a manufacturer of hand-held tools, we feel particularly obligated towards the user to provide increased safety and comfort, as well as to contribute to health preservation," the PFERD director emphasizes. "The
