5 Fundraising requires both optimism and realism. Without the first, few if any gift solicitation efforts would be made. Without the second, few if any would succeed. - Howard L. Jones Fundraising fundamentals Pick a project. Raising money for a specific project (e.g. travelling to a tournament) is generally much easier than raising general funds. Not only is motivation generally higher for specific projects but the sale is often much easier when you can be specific about where the money is going. Set Goals. Most successful fundraising campaigns start with a goal. Setting a specific targeted amount keeps everyone focused and motivated. It s also very important to keep everyone informed about the progress (i.e. how close you are to achieving your goal). One way of doing this is to post a fundraising thermometer in your club. Sell Strategically. When making the ask/sale: Be friendly Get the attention of the customer by using a friendly approach and be sure to make eye contact. Communicate causality communicate why you are raising funds (be specific). Demonstrate need demonstrate how much you need to raise to achieve your goal. Explain the value be sure to explain how much value is in the product you are selling. Make it easy. To facilitate the sale, you need to make it as easy as possible for an individual to make a purchase. At a minimum, make sure you have correct change on hand. For larger displays (e.g. malls), you might want to consider optional ways to accept payment (e.g. credit card, debit). Extend appreciation. Probably the most important step in fundraising is extending your appreciation. Be sure to thank everyone for the purchase. This can be a simple thank you or even a small thank you card or flyer. Saying thanks will make it much easier to fundraise the next time around!
