1 Unit 1: Community & Economy Lesson 1: Circular Flow of an Economy (Pg. 3-12): Students discover the rights and responsibilities of citizenship in a community and examine the flow of goods, services, money, and resources between people and businesses. Citizens, Community, Responsibility, Right, Business, Free Enterprise, Goods, Natural Resources, Resources, Services, Trade, Capital Resources, Circular Flow, Consumers, Entrepreneur, Human resources, Civic virtue, Ethics Lemonade Stand Two students model the concept of the circular flow of an economy by pantomiming the process of opening a lemonade stand and involving other class members

2 Unit 1: Community & Economy Lesson 2: Code of Ethics (Extension Activity, Pg ) Students work in a group to define/develop Code of Ethics Code of Ethics: Students write their own Code of Ethics for JA BizTown

3 Unit 1: Community & Economy Lesson 3: Free Enterprise (Pg ): Students learn the three main sources of tax revenue: income, sales and property tax. Producer, Product, Prototype, Profit, Scarcity Constructing a Product: Students work in groups to plan the production and sale of a product that they created out of construction paper.

4 Unit 1: Community & Economy Lesson 4: Economics Freedom Poster (Extension Activity 1, Pg ): Students will create posters to describe the economic freedoms. Students create a poster that interprets one of the economic freedoms of a Free Enterprise Economy.

5 Unit 1: Community & Economy Lesson 5: Public Goods and Services (Pg ): Students learn about public goods and services and how those are paid for by taxes. Gross pay, Net pay, Taxes, Philanthropy, Private goods and services, Public goods and services, Democracy Students use a rubric to identify examples of public and private goods and services.

6 Unit 2: Financial Literacy Lesson 1: Financial Services (Pg. 3-13) Students are introduced to services provided by financial institutions and discover the connection between spending and having money in the bank. Checking account, Credit card, Credit union, Debit card, Economy, Financial institution, Loan, Online banking, Safe deposit box, Savings account, Transaction Banking Bingo: Students will play bingo to identify types of banking services.

7 Unit 2: Financial Literacy Lesson 2: Checking Accounts (Pg ): Students learn how to endorse and deposit a check and how to manage a checking account register. They also learn the consequence of writing checks without sufficient funds. CFO, Endorse, Income, Paycheck, Deposit ticket, Net Deposit, Bounced check, Check register, Personal check, Direct Deposit Personal Checks: Students practice withdrawing money and write personal checks.

8 Unit 2: Financial Literacy Lesson 3: Savings Plan, Inquiry-Based (Application Activity 3, Pg. 72): Students research the benefits of using interest-earning accounts to save money Interest, Accrue, Compound interest Research Services: Students research the benefits of using interest-earning accounts to save money.

9 Unit 2: Financial Literacy Lesson 4: Debit Cards (Pg ) Students discover ways to complete purchase transactions electronically. They explore the difference between a debit card and a credit card Credit card, Debit card, Gift card, Identity theft, PIN, Prepaid card Venn Diagram: Students compare the advantages and disadvantages related to forms of payment (cash, check, debit, gift cards and prepaid cards).

10 Unit 2: Financial Literacy Lesson 5: Interest in Your Favor (Pg ): Students calculate the cost of an item using credit and discuss how interest in used in savings. Calculating Cost of Credit: Students calculate the cost of an item using credit and discuss how interest is used in savings.

11 Unit 3: Work Readiness Lesson 1: Interest and Skills (Pg. 3-12): Students learn how their interests and skills can be linked to various career alternatives. This lesson puts an emphasis on STEM and high-demand careers. They explore four interest-based career types and demonstrate appropriate workplace behaviors. Interest, Skills, Career, STEM, Employee, Employer, Soft Skills, Teamwork, Innovative solutions, Predicament Acting the Part: Students complete an online assessment and act out appropriate work place behavior.

12 Unit 3: Work Readiness Lesson 2: Education Pays Off (Application Activity 2, Pg ): Students looks at the financial advantages of entering STEMrelated careers. Reading for Information: Students looks at the financial advantages of entering STEM-related careers.

13 Unit 3: Work Readiness Lesson 3: Applying for a Job (Pg ) Students learn about the various steps required to apply for and obtain a job. In addition, they engage in hands-on activities, including the completion of a job application and participation in practice job interviews. Applicant, Job interview, Resume, Referendum Interviews: Students are interviewed for jobs in JA BizTown.

14 Unit 3: Work Readiness Lesson 4: Elections (Application Activity 2, Pg ): Students learn about the steps involved in the democratic process by holding elections for JA BizTown City/County Officials. Voting: Students participate in a election for Mayor/Chairperson.

15 Unit 3: Work Readiness Lesson 5: Career Exploration (Extension Activity 2, Pg ): Students research what kind of careers will be available in the future and how much education they will need to follow those career paths. Researching what it Takes: Students research Careers and identify requirements for the career.

16 Unit 4: Business Management Lesson 1: Business Costs (Pg. 3-11) Students will describe costs associated with operating a business, calculate business expenses and use teamwork to create a paragraph to describe their business. Quality business, Operating costs, Revenue, Salary, Promissory note, Criteria, Ranking, Best practices Calculating Business Costs: Students calculate business costs so they know how much money they will need to operate their business

17 Unit 4: Business Management Lesson 2: Setting Prices Setting Prices (Pg ): Student will define selling price, revenue, and inventory. They will describe factors that affect selling price and explain the relationship between revenue, costs and profits. Selling Price, Inventory, Budget Price Setting: Students practice price-setting method based on business inventory

18 Unit 4: Business Management Lesson 3: BizBriefs (Homework, Extension Activity 2, Pg ): Students review JA Bizbriefs to locate indications of a Quality Business Bizbrief Summary Worksheet: Students complete the BizBrief Summary worksheet according to their assigned business so they can learn more about the products/services their business will sell.

19 Unit 4: Business Management Lesson 4: Quality Task Committee (Pg ): Students brainstorm on what it takes to operate a quality business and develop the criteria each business team will use to evaluate the quality of their business. What is a Quality Business? Students are divided into groups and assigned to committees. As a committee, students complete the Web Report Worksheet based on an assigned criterion to determine what makes a quality business.

20 Unit 4: Business Management Lesson 5: Visit Preparation Pg. (49-60): Students learn about the importance of advertising as a method of marketing the goods and/or services offered by various businesses. Working in business teams, students complete their final preparations for their JA BizTown on-site visit Advertisements: Students brainstorm and create effective advertisements for their JA BizTown business.
