1. Walrus radio-tracking in the southern Chukchi Sea 2008 During the 2008 migration, researchers attached satellite radio-tags to 28 walruses in the southern Chukchi Sea region. Tracking data from this study was intended to help describe walrus movements, feeding areas and sea ice habitats within the area of the Chukchi Sea where oil companies were planning to drill for oil. Data was also collected to show when the animals were in the water and when they were on ice sheets. The data from this study was plotted onto an animated map to show the daily locations of tagged walruses. It also showed the distribution of sea ice based on real-time imagery. Other information can also be collected by the walrus tags, such as sea temperatures, salt levels of the ocean and concentrations of chemicals associated with the oil industry. This information can be used to create models to predict future environmental changes, such as sea ice levels and pollution. (a) (i) Define the term real-time. [2 marks] (ii) Outline four steps involved in converting the data collected from the walrus tag to the animated map in the image on the opposite page. (i) Explain one advantage of using visualization to display the data collected on the walrus tags. [2 marks] (ii) Before walruses were tagged electronically, researchers had to directly observe and manually record their movements. Compare the data collected from walrus tags electronically with that obtained manually. To what extent can information collected from the walrus tags in the Chukchi Sea assist environmental agencies in making decisions about the future development of the area? [8 marks]
Area of impact: Business and employment 2. Visits to the bank are becoming less frequent as more customers use ATMs (automated teller machines)to carry out banking transactions such as withdrawal of funds or deposit of money. Some people, however, are concerned that their accounts may not be safe due to fraud involving ATM cards and ATM machines. Many banks also offer online services. These services include the ability to check your bank balance, transfer money, pay bills and receive alerts. [Source: adapted from fraud and mobile banking 25 August 2008] (a) Identify two output devices on an ATM. [2 marks] Describe one example of fraud involving an ATM card and one possible solution to this crime. Explain two validation processes that take place when you use the ATM to withdraw money from your bank account. To what extent does the improved customer service offered by online banking outweigh the possible disadvantages for customers? [10 marks]
Area of Impact: Health 3. Barnsley Hospital, UK, has a new project to monitor the health of heart patients outside the hospital. This method uses a special wrist device with a sensor to capture medical information continuously from the person using it. Information may then be transmitted using an infrared link to a plug and play device. This device can be connected to the USB port of a computer and the information is then sent to the patient s doctor over the Internet. (a) Identify two features of a sensor. [2 marks] Describe two advantages of using a USB memory device for the storage of medical information. Explain two advantages for the hospital of having a patient at home using these monitoring devices. Evaluate possible solutions to overcome the issues of reliability and privacy of data when patients use this technology. [10 marks]
Area of Impact: Business and Employment 4. Biometric authentication of customers is now being used by many retail stores. Customers register in a store, bringing proof of identity, and then have a finger scanned. When they go shopping at a later date, customers pay for their goods by touching the scanner with a finger and then selecting their preferred method of payment, for example a credit card, the details of which were given at registration. (a) Identify two other physical characteristics, other than fingerprints, that are currently used in biometric systems. [2 marks] With reference to the information technology (IT) that underpins biometrics, describe the process of biometric authentication. Explain why biometric options for payments at retail stores could be considered better than credit card signatures when authenticating the user. Discuss the concerns that people might have with the widespread use of biometric technology by several retail stores and different institutions. [10 marks]
Area of Impact: Health 5. People with disabilities can benefit greatly from a wide variety of IT resources. For example, a person who has been injured can still make use of a computer by using voice input. There is software available that allows a user to control a computer by means of spoken commands. It is also possible to dictate material which can then be saved as a word processed or text file. Such voice recognition software has much potential for helping students and others to perform their tasks. Before voice activated software can be used, the user must first train the system. One voice activated control system states in its documentation that it must be run on a computer with a processor of at least 1 GHz. (a) (i) Define the term GHz. [1 mark] (ii) Identify the component of the processor to which 1 GHz refers. [1 mark] Describe two other hardware features that would be necessary for voice activated input. Explain why the voice activated system must be trained before it can be used. Discuss how voice activated systems and other IT resources can be of benefit to disabled people. [10 marks]
Area of Impact: Science and the Environment 6. Active traffic management is a new pilot motorway scheme that has been put in place on the M42 near Birmingham, UK. The scheme combines a number of new technologies and existing motorway features to provide: reliable journey times reduced congestion enhanced information to drivers quicker responses to incidents. Sensors in the road surface detect traffic and alert the control centre to increases in traffic volume. If the system detects congestion, it calculates the best speed limit to keep traffic flowing and displays this on signs above the road. Speed limits are enforced by digital cameras photographing the registration numbers of any vehicles which exceed the current speed limit. Drivers who exceed the limit are sent a penalty notice requiring them to pay a fine. (a) Identify two possible ways that the road sensors can detect the passing of a vehicle. [2 marks] Describe two ways in which the active traffic management system could help to decrease journey times. Explain how the images from the digital speed cameras can be used to send penalty notices to speeding drivers automatically. Discuss how the active traffic management system could be abused by the authorities. [10 marks]
