1 How to be a Savvy Consumer! 2 What does it mean to be a Savvy Consumer? ~Being knowledgeable about how you spend your money. ~Knowing how to research and look for good deals. ~Being able to discipline yourself when it comes to your finances. ~Being in control of your finances.
3 Why should we be Savvy Consumers? ~SAVE MONEY! ~See where you spend your money. ~To become a better shopper/spender. ~To ensure that you and your money are protected. ~Feel empowered to plan for your future.
4 SAVE!!! ~Start saving TODAY! ~Work overtime or extra shifts when you can. ~Save your raise or any bonus. ~Participate in a 401(k) or 403(b) plan through your employer. ~Take advantage of all employer-sponsored benefits and employersponsored health plans. ~Use your tax return to build savings.
5 More on Savings!!! ~Keep making payments when you pay off a debt. (Place payment in savings account.) ~Set up a percentage of your paycheck to automatically go to savings. (12% women, 10% men.) ~Put change into a jar or piggy bank and let it grow over time and then take it to the bank. ~Pay off your credit card each month to avoid interest or late fees. ~Price-matching
6 Clothing ~Take advantage of off season sales. ~Don t buy clothing at regular price. ~Be wary of shipping costs when shopping online or through a catalog. ~Buy less clothing and purchase items that last longer. ~Buy clothing that is washable and easy to care for. ~Follow the washing directions on the clothing tags.
7 MORE ON Clothing ~Change into more casual clothes after work or other activities. ~Stop buying what you don t need. ~Don t fear returning clothing. ~Always try on your clothes! ~Find and shop at a consignment store. (DI, Savers) ~Donate your unused items to charity. (Tax deduction)
8 MORE ON Clothing ~Eliminate extra costs such as gas. Stop driving so far away just to save a few dollars on gas. ~Group your shopping tips together. Try shopping at the mall or a shopping center where lots of store are close and available. ~Don t let other people who are shopping with you sway your decisions. ~Stick to your budget and avoid credit. If you buy, ONLY Spend what you have!
9 Cutting costs on Groceries ~Buy in bulk Take advantage of case lot sales. ~Avoid expensive cuts of meat. ~Eliminate convenience foods. ~Consider buying generic brands.
10 Cutting costs on Groceries ~Take advantage of resources in the area like community gardens or farmer s markets. ~Plant a garden. ~Use a shopping list ~Manage portion control ~Shop with cash. (Budget envelopes)
11 Cutting costs on Groceries ~Use existing food in the home. Avoid the nothing to eat syndrome. Plan around leftovers. Use your food storage. ~Select and use coupons carefully. ~Prepare food from scratch.
12 ~Plan meals in advance. ~Shop alone and AFTER you have eaten. ~Find a thrift bakery in your area. Day old ~Use unit pricing. ~Drink more water! It is better for you and it s free.
13 Medical Expenses ~Remember good health habits! ~Learn symptoms of common diseases and don t delay in seeing a doctor. ~Take advantage of wellness programs and health screenings. ~Contribute to a Flex or a Health Savings Account.
14 ~Ask for generic prescriptions. Medical Expenses ~Get a second opinion for any major medical procedures. ~Shop around for health insurance. Find out if your job provides benefits. ~Keep track of your medical expenses and examine all hospital, doctor, and dentist bills.
15 Transportation ~Wash your own car. ~Learn basic vehicle maintenance. ~Keep tires inflated properly, check your oil regularly. ~Reduce the amount of driving if you can. Combine errands. ~Carpool or use public transportation.
16 Transportation ~Lease with caution! ~Research before you purchase a vehicle. ~Avoid making late payments on your loan. ~Make extra payments on your loan if you can afford them.
17 Transportation ~Make sure your vehicle is properly insured. ~Ensure you always have your current driver s license and your car is up to date on registration. ~Maintain a steady speed when driving. ~Don t speed. Avoid the ticket! ~Keep your car longer. If you want to sell it, consider selling it yourself.
18 Utilities Turn down your thermostat when you aren t home and when you go to bed. Wear slippers and jackets inside and put an extra blanket on the bed. Take shorter and cooler showers. Maintain and clean your furnace regularly.
19 Utilities Wash clothing in cold water. Don t over dry. (Hang your clothes to dry instead) Insulate ceilings, exterior walls, floors, heat ducts, and hot water pipes. (Keeping outside air out and inside air in.) Drafts
20 U T I L I T I E S ~Use curtains. ~Close doors of unused rooms and shut off heat in those areas. ~Turn lights off. ~Install smoke detectors and have fire extinguishers on hand. ~Save all warranties, owners manuals and receipts.
21 Entertainment Choose activities that are free or cost a small amount. Check out your state or city website for upcoming events and activities. Take a family vacation during the off season. Go camping for vacations. National Park Passes- $80 annually for access to 2,000 sites. Free to members and dependents of the military.
22 Some MORE Ideas! Join 4-H and complete a project as a family. Make puppets with your children. Make a scrapbook. Attend a free cooking class. Have a potluck dinner. Take your own snacks to movies. Go to a matinee movie or $5 Tuesdays.
23 MORE Ideas on family fun! Try to go out for lunch instead of dinner when eating out. Cook a meal with your family. Roads Roll night! Play board games at home. Visit the library. Read books together. Spend time outside.
24 Other Expenses Cut hair at home. Arrange schedules so that one parent is home with the children to save on child care. Recycle. Find new uses for old things. (Old bath towel- car wash towel.) Don t buy a house that you can t afford. If you have the money, pay extra on your mortgage. Have paychecks be directly deposited into your account and for bills to be deducted automatically.
25 Other Expenses Beware of home-shopping networks on the TV. Consider the cost of habits. Take advantage of discounts through your employers(gym memberships, concert tickets, passes) Pay more than the minimum payments on debts!
26 Other Expenses Use only your bank or credit union s ATM. Always send in for rebates. Beware of discount store syndrome. Consider buying a used item instead of new. Shop for holidays year round.
27 Generating Extra Income Recycle scrap metal. Open a childcare business. Sell crafts, jewelry, art, or photos at farmer s markets. Start a small business like lawn mowing or pet walking. Rent out a room in your home if you have the extra space. Share or trade talents with friends and family. Teach piano or singing lessons in exchange for lawn mowing, hair cuts, etc.

29 Ask yourself these questions before making a purchase: ~Can I do without it? ~Can I postpone this purchase? ~Can I substitute something else that costs less? ~Can I use my own skills to make it myself? ~Do I already own it?
