6 1INCENTIVES & REBATES Incentives & rebates There s never been a better time to jump into solar. The government has finally created incentives for homeowners to help lower the cost of installing solar. But who knows how long they will last, so you better take action before they re gone. Combined with state, local and utility rebates, these incentives are nothing to sneeze at. In some areas you could save more than 50% off the total cost of your newly installed system. There are hundreds, maybe thousands of renewable energy incentives and rebates across the United States. Finding the ones that apply to you can be like finding a needle in a haystack. So I won t be covering each and every rebate program in detail in this section. The good news is I ve created a piece of software that lets you find all the rebates available in your area. The information in the software is updated in real time, so rebates can change day to day. Although we ve done our best to keep the software accurate and up-to-date, it s important to always check for yourself to see if there are any changes to your region regarding grants, rebates, tax incentives etc. It s best to know upfront what s covered and what s not, before investing thousands into a solar system. I want to point out something that really bothers me. One thing I ve noticed since the government announced all these rebates is the prices that commercial solar companies are charging have gone through the roof! Since most customers will be saving 30-50% off their system, they feel it s ok to add a few more thousand dollars. Government rebate forms 1

7 Another thing to realize is that you have to pay for the full bill up front. It s only after you install the system and wait for the government to write you a cheque that you get that money back. My point is, as good as all these rebates are, it s most important to get the initial cost of the system as low as possible. You ll need to submit some of them in order to apply for your rebate and tax credits. Since these rebates come from the Government there are tons of fine print to read and rules to follow, so make sure you understand their requirements before you submit your application for rebates. federal government One of the best rebates you will find is 30% Federal tax credit which applies to solar systems installed on new and existing homes. Tax credits are subtracted from the amount you owe on your federal taxes at year end. So if your solar installation costs you $12,000, you ll get 30% off with just this one rebate alone. This brings your cost down to only $8,400. The best part is that it s available all across the country. There s no upper limit and it applies to not only solar panels but solar water heaters, wind generators, geothermal and even the cost of installation. The bad news is, it s set to expire in So don t wait! Now is the time to get started. state government Each state has their own rebates and incentive programs. It s best to check the Power Freedom Rebate software to find out what s available in your area. Once you ve logged into the software and selected your state, you get access to all the rebates available in your area. 8 Some states have no property tax increase laws. These laws prevent your property taxes from rising because of an increase in the value of your home. Therefore if you install solar systems on your home and the value of your home goes up $35,000, the government won t charge you the extra taxes. This is a tremendous break; very few home improvement investments get this kind of exception from increased property taxes. local government Although there s not as many local rebates, it s best to check through them all anyway. Sometimes if you do a little digging you ll find a gem that could save you hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. utility rebates As surprising as it sounds, some utility companies offer incredible rebates. I ve seen rebates in areas like Florida where utilities pay several thousands of dollars in cash just to install your system. The reason they offer these is because of Obama s energy policies which require utility companies to generate a certain amount of energy using clean technologies. And since they re mostly using coal and oil, they need your help to meet their quota. If you happen to live in a state where you can switch power companies, compare a few and see if the incentives are worth the change. As I mentioned earlier in this section, government grants, tax credits and rebates are constantly changing. What s here today maybe gone tomorrow. So it s important to double check that major rebates don t expire before you invest in a new system. The last thing I want is for you to get all excited about how much money you ve saved only to find out the rebate is now gone. DIY Install One more thing. If you do decide to install your own panels, don t forget to get rebates on your time. That s right; you can submit the cost of your time it took to install the panels to receive additional rebates.
