1 Sprt Management Practicum Curse CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS/CEDAR RAPIDS KERNELS Summer 2018 University f Iwa students can take a three-credit summer curse that includes tw weeks in Chicag cmpleting sprt business prjects fr the Chicag Blackhawks! Check ut the details belw: The class will begin meeting n June 25 in Iwa City and cnclude n July 29 in Chicag During the first half, students will be in Iwa City wrking n a sprt marketing prject fr the Cedar Rapids Kernels minr league baseball team. All transprtatin t and frm Cedar Rapids will be prvided by the University f Iwa. Students will reprt t Chicag n July 12 and be brken int prject teams t receive business challenges frm Blackhawks executives in marketing, cmmunicatins, sales, cmmunity relatins and ther areas. Each prject team will wrk tgether t perfrm research and develp recmmendatins t achieve the Blackhawks business bjectives. Each team will make a final presentatin f recmmendatins t Blackhawks executives. In past years the Blackhawks have used the best student recmmendatins! Students will have additinal pprtunities, including helping prepare fr and successfully run the Blackhawks Cnventin. Graphic Design students will have an pprtunity t wrk with all student prject teams t develp high-quality visual materials fr submissin t the Blackhawks. 1

Rsevelt University is in a secure high rise in the heart f Chicag verlking the lake and Buckingham Funtain. In Iwa City students will need t prvide their wn husing. Class size is limited! Due t high demand, students will be required t apply fr acceptance, just like an internship r jb. In rder t be cnsidered, submit a cver letter and résumé t Dan Mathesn via (danielmathesn@uiwa.edu). The deadline t submit yur applicatin is February 18, Yur letter shuld: Explain why yu wish t take the curse Explain what yu can ffer in terms f previus experience, expertise, relevant curse wrk, wrk ethic and/r any ther qualities that yu believe will cntribute t success in the curse. Desirable qualities include strng cmmunicatin skills (public speaking/presentatin and writing/editing), tireless wrk ethic, unyielding attentin t detail, ability t wrk effectively with teammates, event management experience, dependability, maturity, creativity and an interest in perfrming market research in rder t develp the best pssible recmmendatin fr the Blackhawks. GPA and cursewrk will be reviewed and taken int cnsideratin, and finalists may be asked t interview fr a spt in the curse. There are typically applicants fr 20 available spts in the curse. 2

I made s many cnnectins nt nly with sprts business prfessinals, but als with my fellw students. We created a bnd that is ging t last a lifetime and yu can t put a price n that. Yu can t match this experience in a classrm r nline. The level f prfessinalism we have t maintain during the practicum brings everyne s wrk level up a ntch. The mst beneficial experience fr me in Chicag was wrking the Fan Cnventin. Nt nly did it give me the pprtunity t shw Blackhawks staff my wrk ethic, it als allwed me t get real event management and custmer service training. I never knew I culd d s much in tw weeks and I m really prud f what I accmplished because I really believe that wrking with the Blackhawks frced me t put my best wrk frward. It was awesme hearing all the minr details and seemingly insignificant things that are actually extremely imprtant t the cntracts the Blackhawks have with their spnsrs. After taking Recreatin and Sprts Prmtin last semester, the meeting served as a perfect example f hw spnsrship activatin plays a rle in the sprts industry. These 3 weeks have been an experience that I will never frget. It has allwed me t gain a deeper understanding f what it is like t wrk in the sprts industry. Yu have shwed me the dedicatin it takes t make it in the sprts industry. Yu have helped shw me that smething I nce thught was impssible, like wrking in cperatin with the Blackhawks, is pssible. With hard wrk, dedicatin, and mtivatin anything is pssible. Thank yu fr pening my eyes and allwing me t realize that I am capable f mre than I had thught. It was an hnr t be a part f this experience! 4

The fee pays fr husing csts in Chicag, public transprtatin csts in Chicag, breakfast/lunch/dinner service at the drm in Chicag, netwrking dinner in Chicag, pizza dinner in Iwa City during the spring semester, a class uting t a sprting event in Chicag, and transprtatin in Iwa fr the prject during the first week. Students will arrange their wn transprtatin t/frm Chicag. Students frm all majrs are encuraged t apply. There is a specific need fr Jurnalism students wh can wrk n prjects fr the Blackhawks New Media and Creative Services department and Graphic Design students t help prduce reprts and ther materials fr submissin t the Blackhawks and take n ther design prjects that may cme up.
