4 What is Social Networking? Dictionary.com defines it as: Main Entry: social networking Part of Speech: n Definition: the use of a website to connect with people who share personal or professional interests, place of origin, education at a particular school, etc. What is Social Networking? A social network service focuses on building online communities of people who share interests and/or activities, or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others. What is Social Networking? Video: Social Networking in Plain English 4
5 What is Social Networking? What is Social Networking? In general, social networking services allow users to create a profile for themselves and share information about themselves with others. They are FREE! These methods of communication can be used by businesses to connect with volunteers, staff, boards, donors, friends, fans, followers, supporters, contact, media, etc. Globally Used Social Networking Sites Tool Audience Tool Audience Tool Audience Facebook, Twitter MySpace, LinkedIn Nexopia Worldwide North America Canada Tuenti Spain Decayenne, Europe Tagged, XING, Badoo, Skyrock Friendster, Mixi, Multiple, Orkut, Wretch, Xiaonei, Cyworld Asia and Pacific Islands Bebo, Hi5 StudiVZ, iwiw Germany Hungary Orkut, Hi5 South and Central Orkut, Facebook India 5
6 Social Impact of Social Networking New Term: "Groundswell" (Book by Forrester Research, 2008). "...a spontaneous movement of people using online tools to connect, take charge of their own experience, and get what they need--information, support, ideas, products, and bargaining power--from each other." Social Impact of Social Networking Contemporary youth have seen a rapid increase in curfew legislation along with loitering laws. All of which have been dedicated to the prevention of teen violence and to reduce their involvement in drugs. Social Impact of Social Networking Parents and/or guardians tend to place rules on where they can be and when they can be there. This combination of laws and household restrictions hinders and limits the area of social interaction to school and maybe with nearby neighbors. 6
7 Social Impact of Social Networking As a result the youth turns to on-line networks that allow them to communicate with not only their friend circle but others with similar interests. Social networks have ultimately become the best frontier for teenagers to interact and socialize. Social Impact of Social Networking Tap into the power of social good.
