1 1 Make Your Presentation More Interesting As you know there are three major principles for Presentation Mastery, and one of the three is to Energize so that your presentation is interesting to your audience. So today s workshop is going to focus on how you incorporate the 4Es of Energy in your presentation and ultimately avoid this from happening (Give a moment to view) So what are the 4E s of Energy? They are Examples, Engagement, Entertainment, and Emotional Connection Examples Engagement Entertainment Emotional Connection One of the questions that is frequently asked is, Do I apply the 4E s to every presentation? The answer is: Ideally yes, but how much depends on your objective.

2 2 4Es of Energy - Usage depends on your presentation objective High Med Low Educate Persuade Inspire Engagement Entertainment Examples Emotional Connection For example, if your presentation purpose is to educate you should use lots of Engagement followed by examples and entertainment. CLICK But if your objective is to persuade then you will want to lead with examples over the other categories like engagement and emotional connection. CLICK And lastly if your objective is to inspire then you will want to lead with emotional connection Today I am going to share a sample presentation that uses all four E s of Energy. The objective is to show you how you can add these to your presentations going forward to make them more interesting To help you identify the 4Es of Energy we are going to use the Energize evaluation tool. You have either been handed this or have downloaded it. So get your sheet out and let s see how many E s you can identify in this presentation. Winning in the Marketplace Today I would like to present a strategy for winning in the marketplace. Let me start off by asking you, when you think of healthy food choices, does this come to mind?

3 It probably doesn t. But in the next few minutes I am going to share how this Milky Way is actually very relevant to a healthy direction that many companies are taking to be more be successful. In addition to being a candy bar, the Milky Way is also the name of our galaxy that contains our solar system As you all know, in our solar system the sun is at the center. But what if we were to look at this picture from a business perspective? What would be in the center of our business? I think many of you would say 11 Customer is at the center Customer The customer is at the center. For most of us it is a long held belief that if you treat your customers well, they will reward you with business and you will be profitable. Interestingly, there is an increasing number of companies that are challenging this concept. They are doing it for two reasons Different Generation 2. Volatile Business Atmosphere Customer 1) First off, we re dealing with a customer base and a workforce that are from a newer generation that respond to the world of business far differently than the Baby Boomers Secondly, the atmosphere in which we do business is far more volatile than in the past leading to more uncertainty in our organizations. 13 So today, I am going to be like those scientists who announce new discoveries in the solar system. It turns out that many companies believe that in order to win in the marketplace it s not the customer who needs to be at the center, but instead

4 4 Your employees should be at the center your employees. Let me ask you, how many of your employees feel like this fellow? Your Employees 14 (Give them a moment to read) It s always, Sit, Stay, Heel Never : Think, Innovate, Be Part of the Solution. 15 How engaged do you think your employees are? Strongly engaged Engaged Disengaged Strongly Disengaged 16 Kidding aside, how engaged do you think your employees are? (Give them time to read/think about) If you are like most of us, you have employees who fall into all four of these categories. I know that I personally have been in all four of the categories during my career. The time I was most disengaged is when I worked (add a 30 second personal story here) CLICK But what if all your employees fell into the top two categories? There is some very compelling evidence that the more engaged your employees are the more successful you will be. The most impressive data comes from the annual Gallup Employee Engagement assessment. 5 Level of Engagement Level of Engagement 5 Difference Between Those in Top and Bottom Top Quartile 2nd Quartile 3rd Quartile In the study they analyzed the difference between those employees in the top quartile of engagement versus those in the bottom. What do you think was the difference when they analyzed the customer satisfaction ratings of those who had be serviced by the top versus the bottom quartile group? Bottom Quartile 18 Difference Between Those in Top and Bottom Was it 10, 20, 30 or 50% higher for the top group? Top Quartile 2nd Quartile 3rd Quartile A) 10% B) 20% C) 30% D) 50% Bottom Quartile 19 Engaged Employees Positively Affect Business Outcomes Percent difference in top quartile vs bottom quartile. Surveyed 192 companies. 40% 20% 0% -20% Turnover Safety Incidents Quality Defects 30% Profitability Productivity Customer Satisfaction The answer is 30%. Which is significant. In fact, as you can see from the research, when comparing the top and bottom quartiles, the differences are notable in every category. Engaged employees positively affect business outcomes in all areas. -40% -60% -80% Source: Gallup Employee Engagement Assessment 20 It is at this point that you are likely to ask, but isn t employee engagement expensive? The answer to that is, it can be. But an increasing number of companies are discovering the secret to employee engagement that doesn t cost a lot. 21 Remember that Milky Way Bar I mentioned in the beginning. 22

6 6 If you turn that bar over, on the back you ll see the nutrition label that details everything inside. It s full transparency about what you re eating. 23 Transparency is Big News Turns out that same full transparency is very powerful when implemented in an organization. Though it s understood that public companies have some limitations, the reality is that employees respond very positively when management includes them in what s happening in the organization. Forbes had an article recently on 24 Ten Leaders Who Aren t Afraid to Be Transparent. 7 7 Tony Hsieh, CEO And lastly, the CEO of Zappos, Tony Hsieh has encouraged a wide spread use of twitter to break down walls and create transparency. When the company had to layoff 8% of their workforce, the remaining employees cited the transparency as one of the most important elements in helping them move on and stay engaged. Covey As Stephen Covey said, Treat your employees exactly as you want them to treat your best customers. 29 To help you remember the importance of transparency I have a Milky Way Bar treat for each of you (hand out bars) 30 Win in the Marketplace Transparent in the Way You Do Business More Engaged Employees More Satisfied Customers PLUS Much More! So in conclusion, in order to win in the marketplace, be transparent in the way you do business. It will lead to more engaged employees. Which will lead to more satisfied customers PLUS much, much more. Is this strategy right for your organization? 31
