2013 St. Louis Green Business Challenge Emeritus Company Case Study Questionnaire THANK YOU for your leadership in the Green Business Challenge, and in demonstrating successful integration of sustainable thinking into your business operations. We want you to share your experiences to advance sustainability in the St. Louis business community. Your input through this questionnaire will constitute completion of the 2013 Challenge at the Emeritus level. Challenge staff will compile this information into an Emeritus Case Study and will utilize your input to better recruit and support Challenge participation as the program evolves. **We plan to include this information in the 2013 St. Louis Green Business Challenge Accomplishment Booklet. Please mark with an asterisk which answers you prefer not to be published. CONTACT INFORMATION Company Name: St. Louis Cardinals, LLC Address: 700 Clark Street, St. Louis, MO Website: Sustainability-specific web content: Primary Sustainability Contact: (Please include name, , phone) SUSTAINBILITY BASICS When did sustainability become a distinct element of your company s functions? Our 4 A Greener Game program was started in What factors motivated your company s focus on sustainability? Our focus on sustainability is driven by the urge to do the right thing. Sporting events are wasteful endeavors by nature, so there is a need for sporting venues to offset this waste by conserving energy and diverting waste out of landfills. 1

Briefly describe your company s process of incorporating sustainability into business operation. We look at what we can do with regards to sustainability, and then we have to look at a few factors before incorporating new processes. We must consider the impact of any new processes on our fans. Monetary and labor costs in terms of man-hours must also be considered. Once we decide to incorporate something, we try it out on a small scale, tweak it, and then roll it out on a larger scale. How did you form and select your green team? The Green Team was formed and made of staff members who have the ability to implement change and who are involved and familiar with the operation of Busch Stadium as a facility and entertainment venue. Briefly describe the makeup of your company s Green Team. (which departments are represented) The St. Louis Cardinals Green Team is made up solely of staff from the Stadium Operations Department. The VP of Stadium Operations Joe Abernathy, Manager of Facility, Security, and Stadium Operations Hosei Maruyama, and Stadium Operations Assistant Tony Valleroy. Our Green Team is made up of staff members who are involved in different aspects of operations at Busch Stadium, allowing enough diversity to bring differing perspectives to our greening efforts. How do you maintain or increase engagement in the group? Our group stays engaged in greening because some of our everyday responsibilities have something to do with a sustainability initiative. Each member of our Green Team is thinking green in some way or another every single day. How is responsibility for sustainability considerations/actions primarily distributed within your employee base? (e.g. dedicated position/division; part of operating group; part of staffer s job, etc.) Duties involving sustainability are written into some jobs, and the Stadium Operations department is responsible for sustainability at Busch Stadium. Please share, attach, or provide a link to, an example of your company s public verbiage related to sustainability (e.g. sustainability policy statement, description from an award nomination, summary text from internal sustainability communications, sustainability reporting documentation, etc.) The St. Louis Cardinals are committed to promoting environmental stewardship and sustainability. Our goal is to put a winning team on the field and create a safe, fun, family friendly environment and entertainment experience for our guests while minimizing the impact on the natural environment. Specifically, the Cardinals will: 2

Strive to minimize pollution and waste through programs designed to reduce and recycle the consumable materials we use throughout our operations. Conserve energy and water, support renewable energy resources, and encourage environmentally sound transportation options for employees and fans. Identify and purchase environmentally friendly products and services for all stadium and team operations. MAKING SUSTAINABILITY WORK Briefly describe up to three major successes from your sustainability strategies. - We are currently diverting over 4.5 tons of waste for each home game at Busch Stadium. We are able to achieve this by continuing to evaluate our strategies and execution of strategies throughout the season. - By incorporating local organizations that are related to sustainability, we are able to give this movement visibility in a market where green is still catching on. One of our greatest accomplishments is bringing sustainability to the top of peoples minds when they think of the St. Louis Cardinals. - The St. Louis Cardinals currently run one of the most successful and recognized recycling volunteer groups in Major League Baseball. Provide up to three quantifiable, cost-saving sustainability accomplishments. Please include data if possible. Diverting around 33% of our waste from landfills into recycling streams has saved money due to rebates received for our recycling. Reducing energy usage by 20% saves costs as well. Provide up to three examples of ways sustainability measures that you plan to implement and collect in the future. We are planning on increasing our recycling and compost bins, as well as experimenting with post consumer sorting of our waste stream to maximize diversion rates. We are working on methods for quantifying our energy and water usage so we can form strategies to reduce usage of both. What are some examples of barriers to sustainability integration within your company? How did you overcome these barriers? One of the main barriers to sustainability within the Cardinals is the different needs of the different groups within the company. Our industry is very diverse, so making a change that has little impact to one department may have big implications to another. We overcome this by piloting new ideas during times when negative impacts have smaller implications so we can evaluate these impacts and fine tune before full implementation. 3

What are the Top 3 Sustainability Best Practices you recommend to other companies as they begin their start towards sustainability? 1. Establish who in your company will be involved with sustainability (i.e. Green Team) and empower them. 2. Identify where your company produces the most waste and develop strategies to reduce that waste. 3. Educate your staff on the importance of sustainability, and make sure they know what they can do to help. BROADER INFLUENCES Please describe how your company s sustainability focus is influencing some of the following sectors: supply chain vendors, your industry sector, and your company s internal culture. Please provide specific examples. The Cardinals sustainability has had influence on what is purchased by our Food Service Provider, Sportservice. In areas where they were previously purchasing items with no regard to sustainability, it is now being considered before ordering. Within Major League Baseball, the Cardinals are considered to be on the leading edge of sustainability, particularly in the Midwest. The Cardinals participated in a Sports and Sustainability discussion at the White House in If applicable, please share an example of how sustainability is negatively perceived within your company and your thoughts on how to reverse that perception. LEADERSHIP VIEWPOINTS What external driving forces do you see as factors motivating continued integration of sustainability focus into your company s activity and why? Please provide up to three examples. (Examples: supplier/vendor reporting requirements, government contracts, young talent expects it! etc.) As sustainability comes to the forefront, Major League Baseball is likely to mandate more sustainability standards for its clubs. We like to stay ahead of the curve, so these standards would push us to expand our sustainability efforts. What resources or forces within the business world do you see as the strongest contributors to sustainability growing as valued part of doing business for business in general? 4

As younger generations begin to join the workforce, we begin to see professionals who see sustainability as a normal thing, rather than a change in culture. Rather than being something that is a painful, expensive process, it is becoming something that is simply part of doing business in modern society. Of course, as technologies advance, infrastructure improves, and demand rises, some aspects of sustainability will become less painful and less costly. Provide up to three examples of how you see sustainability functioning in the mix of your company s strategic and operational development over the next 3-5 years? Please cite factors or resources you see as necessary for such outcomes. Sustainability will become more integrated with the purchasing practices for day to day operations of our office. We are currently very focused on sustainability during events because that is what the Stadium Operations Department can control. As our purchasing department begins to see the benefits of sustainability and possible financial benefits, we sustainability will likely become ingrained in our day to day operations. Please share a statement about your personal engagement with sustainability. Sustainability in the sport industry is not an easy task sporting events are wasteful in nature (guests generate roughly one pound of waste each per game) and present large challenges operationally and strategically with regards to sustainability. Anything we can do lessen the impact of this waste on the environment makes quite a difference. Consequently, successes in sustainability at Busch Stadium are incredibly rewarding. Our accomplishments at Busch Stadium are certainly something to be proud of. THANK YOU! 5
