3 1 Intrductin The visitr/shpper intercept surveys utilized a cmprehensive and multi-mdal apprach t determine the level f changed behavir, tgether with ther variables, by quantificatin f driver shift t public transprtatin, level f satisfactin with the parking experience, parking search times and n-street ccupancy rates f parking spts. The general methdlgical apprach included an intercept survey n lcatin at multiple pilt and cntrl sites, befre and after SFpark. The SFMTA retained Ewald & Wasserman Research Cnsultants (E&W) fr survey design and implementatin. This dcument prvides critical infrmatin regarding the availability and use f this dataset. 1.1 Timeline SFpark staff wrked with cnsultants frm Ewald & Wasserman Research Cnsultants t cllect and analyze intercept survey data ver tw data cllectin perids: Spring 2011: Befre Spring 2013: After 1.2 Availability f Data The cmplete dataset is available nline and includes all intercept survey questins and respnses fr the evaluatin f the SFpark pilt prject. The survey instrument was develped t illuminate the baseline factrs that affect the decisin making prcess fr transprtatin mde chice. These factrs included the type and frequency f transprtatin use, values placed upn time spent lking fr parking, perceptin f parking ease and availability in the area, travel party size, and the type f parking ultimately selected fr the trip. The survey data includes demgraphic infrmatin f respndents in additin t their respnses abut travel behavir. 2.1 Summary f Cntents There are five different survey data files, tw are the same data in different files frmats ie. The 2011 and 2013 data is available in bth a CSV and in SPSS frmats. The survey questins and answers are cded. There is an excel wrkbk that cntains bth years survey data cmbined and translated frm the cding s it is easily understd at a glance. Fr significant statistical analyses, using the raw, cded data may be necessary. Als included are the methdlgical reprts and the survey instruments fr each year. Tempral Attributes f the Data The date and time that the intercept survey was cnducted are the nly tempral attributes f the data and the times are recrded at the nearest 30 minute break, i.e. 11:00am r 11:30am, nt 11:27am. Fr each cllectin perid, data was cllected in each pilt and cntrl area n weekdays (Mnday thrugh Friday) frm 9am-7pm, and n Saturdays between 10am-7pm. In 2011, the survey was cnducted frm April 1 st t April 30 th, and fr 2013 between April 15 th and May 14 th. Gegraphic Attributes f the Data Survey interviews were cnducted in three pilt and all cntrl areas. The nly gegraphic attributes t this dataset are the pilt r cntrl area names, and the residence zip cdes f the respndents.

5 2.2 Data Dictinary There are detailed data dictinaries fr each year s dataset which explain the cding in the zip file. These are necessary fr understanding and using the SPSS and raw data files. 3 Methdlgy The intercept survey was fcused n adults in three pilt site areas and tw cntrl site areas in the city f San Francisc. The Visitr and Shpper intercept survey examined factrs related t parking and travel behavir, including transprtatin mde chices, parking perceptins and ultimate chices as well as level f satisfactin with the parking experience. The intercept was cnceptualized as a five t six minute survey ffered t pedestrians in ne f the targeted lcatins during the specified intervals f data cllectin. Only drivers were asked t cmplete the entire survey. Intercept participants were classified int three segments: thse wh had driven t the lcatin the day f the intercept (drivers); thse wh did nt drive t the target area at the time f intercept but had dne s in the past year (nn-drivers); and thse wh had never driven t the area (never-drivers). Nn-drivers were asked abut their mtivatin nt t use a car at the time f intercept. Drivers and nn-drivers were asked abut transprtatin mde changes in the past year, awareness f parking availability infrmatin, type and lcatin f parking and ratinal fr changes in the type f parking selected ver the past year. Never-drivers were thanked fr their time and were nt interviewed further. Fr respndents wh did nt drive n the day f the intercept but did drive t the area within the last year, the survey asked them t specify the reasns fr the decisin nt t drive, hence further examining the determinatin prcesses behind their travel mde chice. 3.1 Survey deplyment The surveyed ppulatin f the study cnsisted f adults 18 years r lder, wh had driven in a vehicle n the day f the intercept survey r wh had driven t the area f the intercept within the last year. The respndent universe was cmprised f residents and visitrs f the key cmmercial crridrs f the SFpark prject wh respnded affirmatively t having driven that day r within the last year. The key crridrs were selected and defined by parking management districts and distinguished as three pilt and tw cntrl areas. The lcatins fr data cllectin were selected based n the pilt and cntrl gegraphic areas delineated by the SFpark prject plan. The lcatins selected wuld be mst apprpriate fr intercepting visitrs, residents and peple wrking in an area. The selectin prcess integrated factrs such as pedestrian vlume in metered areas, prximity t public and private garages and parking lts, as well as

6 nearness t cmmerce, dining and ther ptential destinatin pints. Fr larger areas with multiple cmmercial crridrs, such as dwntwn, surveyrs were psitined strategically t achieve a balance between the district s main cmmercial areas. When analyzing this dataset, ne must be mindful t nly cunt ttal number f respndents and nt respnses.

7 4.2 Time f survey discrepancies The discrepancy in the number f peple surveyed in the AM vs. PM between 2011 and 2013 culd pse an issue in terms f cmparing reasn fr visit, amunt paid t park, type f parking, r even parking search time. Making a sub-sample is recmmended. 4.3 Different questins, different rder The questins fr 2011 and 2013 are almst identical fr cmparisn purpses, but there are a few additinal nes in 2013 as well as slightly different nes fr the reasn fr visit questin. This makes cmparisns difficult. The rder f questins between 2011 and 2013 are als nt the same, fr example in 2011 questin 13 asked abut hw much mney was spent in the area and in 2013 it is questin 10.
