Twitter Twitter is a social network. Twitter boasts over 300 million users. Many of these users are young professionals who post personal and professional topics from their computer or smartphone. Developing a presence on Twitter is a great way to increase your knowledge of your industry. If you are new to social media, you may wonder how time spent on Twitter can help you grow professionally. Many people p have found an open,,professional community on Twitter that is easy to be a part of. It is important to treat Twitter as a professional community and build up connections with consistent use over time.
Things You'll Need Professional photo of yourself Background image TweetDeck application Smart phone Twitter application American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine (AACPDM)
Twitter TODAY, LET'S TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT WAYS TO USE TWITTER EFFECTIVELY:
Creating a Professional Twitter Account Decide what you want to get from your Twitter account, before you sign up for one. Defining your purpose will help direct your actions. Create your bio as if it's an online resume, or an introduction at a professional conference. Try to make your Twitter username as close to your real name as you can. Customize your background image. Choose an image from your website or your logo. Start tweeting about professional topics and personal interests. You should post at least 20 or more times before starting to follow people on Twitter. Few people will follow you, if they can't read about your interests and favorite topics. American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine (AACPDM)
Networking on Twitter Find former and current colleagues on Twitter. Search for them by name or website in the top search box, and then click the "Follow" button on their profile. Tweet them with a greeting, using the "@" followed by their username. Go to WeFollow or Twellow to find industry leaders on Twitter. Don't be shy, if you find a post that you want to respond to. Click the reply button and state an opinion, ask a question or say "Thanks" for a helpful industry post. The only way you will gain followers is by thoughtful interaction. Tweet consistently, but not constantly. Professionals like to follow Twitter users that know up-to-date industry news, tweet thoughtful comments and retweet or respond occasionally. Follow trending topics and hashtags. h If there is any big news in your industry, or you know of an upcoming professional event, look for hashtags related to that event. A hashtag is a hash "#" symbol, followed by a word or 2 that identifies and important topic.
Managing your Twitter Account Make lists of the people p you follow, so that you can easily scan and respond to tweets. Go to your profile page and click on the "Lists" section to create a list. # Download a desktop application such as TweetDeck. American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine (AACPDM)
#aacpdm13 What s the best way to engage your followers? Ask questions. Listen. Then show people you re listening by responding. #aacpdm13 the most retweeted content tends to contain links, pictures, videos or quotes. #aacpdm13 Make it shareable. What makes people p share? Funny, helpful, newsworthy or inspiring content. #aacpdm13 Keep it conversational. Write a Tweet tlik like you re having a conversation with a good friend. Strive for a genuine style. #aacpdm13
Twitter Tips and Tricks Try to have fun on Twitter. The most successful Twitter users understand that it is a community conversation, and they are good natured, positive and often witty. Even though h you are using your Twitter for professional reasons, don't take it too seriously.
Warnings Never post anything on Twitter that you wouldn't say in front of your managers at work. Although you can remove a past tweet, you cannot completely delete it, because it is part of the site, once it has been tweeted. Leave religion, politics and other polarizing topics for other platforms. American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine (AACPDM)
#aacpdm13 Employ yyour razor wit. Show off your own brand of humor, wit and know-how. #aacpdm13 #aacpdm The d or D at the beginning of a message tells Twitter to send that message privately.
Step-By-Step Sign up. Go to twitter.com, register and select a screen name. Your new Twitter name will be prefaced with sign. Add it to your signature so people know to find you on aacpdm
Step-By-Step Find people p to follow. Twitter is nothing until you start building a network of folks you're interested in hearing from. Beyond the news, check out your favorite friends, athletes, politicians, musicians, comedians, movie and TV stars.
Step-By-Step Write up a bio (160 characters). Let people p know about you, with a short, one sentence blurb about yourself. And be sure to include a photo, because a photo is associated with your posts in the Twitter feed. If you don't add the photo, an image of a little egg in a yellow box will show up in your tweets instead.
TIP Learn how to write in 140 characters. The art of tweeting requires the ability to be concise. You have 140 characters, but try to stay under 125, for when someone RT s you tweet
TIP Use hashtags in your posts and searches. The hashtag symbol # is what's used to search for "trending" topics.
TIP Don't just promote: RT and MT. Rule No. 1 of the successful tweeter is that it's not all about you.
TIP Get response from companies with a tweet. Many businesses are now all over Twitter to monitor what people are saying about them. You might have better luck getting companies like Verizon to respond to a customer-service issue on Twitter than you would waiting for a rep on the phone. Hotels, restaurants, airlines will see what you post, and respond in kind.
TIP Tie your account to Facebook. It's easy to pair your Twitter activity with your Facebook account, so you don't have to double the effort.
TIP Direct messages. On Twitter you can communicate directly in private messages, but only with folks who already follow you (until this week twitter is allowing DM s to anyone). So be sure to follow your friends you want to DM with, and get them to respond in kind.
TIP Add photos to your tweets. Text and a link are great, but let's face it, everything looks better with visuals. The images show up as a link, but they're worth adding.
Ways to use Twitter effectively Hope this helps. Good luck getting g your Twitter started, and hey, if nothing else, you've got a new person to follow. Start and let me know how you're faring in Tweetland.
