4 Average sales per hour: Sky s the limit! Description: Customer orders popcorn on an order form and waits for it to be delivered in November. Who buys this way? Family members, friends, neighbors, parents coworkers, teachers, coaches, hairdressers, and customers purchasing only military magnets. Best Practice: Before Scouts hit the streets and knock on doors, they should approach closest family and friends, especially during the new two week blitz (September 4-18). Help Scouts make a list of family and friends they know will make a purchase. After initial contacts, they should be close to their goal and feeling confident of their sale victories! Average sales per hour: $200 Description: Scout, with a friend or family member, sells popcorn on-hand (in a wagon or vehicle) to customers at home; delivering the popcorn and collecting payment on-the-spot. Who buys this way? Suburban neighborhoods, rural homes, city townhouses, and customers only purchasing military ribbons. Best Practice: Allow the customer to receive popcorn on-the-spot only after they place an order on the form. Say, Would you like your product now instead of waiting? Customers tend to choose the least expensive item that you have on hand, so don t let them see your stash right away. 3

5 Average sale per customer: $45 Description: Scouts solicit customers via or social media. Customers order popcorn using Scout s online link or searching for them on Then customers pay shipping and receive popcorn within 3-9 business days. Who buys this way? Out-of-town family and friends, parents coworkers, and social media connections. Best Practice: Scouts self-register for online selling and create an account at the beginning of the sale (online sales begin Sept.1). They are encouraged to and share personal order links on social media. Within two weeks, they should follow-up with those who have not ordered and send thank you messages to those who have. Average sales per hour: $100 Description: Scouts sell popcorn (exchange popcorn and money on-the-spot) to strangers in front of high-traffic stores or events. Who buys this way? Strangers, grocery store shoppers, college students, sports attendees, and festival attendees. Best Practice: Schedule booth time with store managers as soon as possible. Schedule Scouts to fill two hour timeslots. All participating Scouts get equal credit for the day s total sales. This is a great way to increase visibility in the community and recruit new Scouts! 4 4

6 o Review last year s unit popcorn sale. o Ask your unit committee: o Did our unit meet its goal? o What went well? o What could we improve this year? o Review your recommended initial order on the Unit Sales Plan Worksheet (provided by the council). o With your unit s annual budget in mind, create a unit sales goal. o Place your unit s initial popcorn order by August 28th, no later than 11:59pm.Remember, orders are by the case, not containers. This popcorn is for storefront and neighborhood sales. o Sign Up for storefront sale dates and times with council o Prepare a popcorn kickoff kit for Scouts and their parents. Include unit budget, calendar and popcorn sale expectations. o Prepare a communication plan with Scout parents and leaders (meeting announcements, mass s, social media blasts,etc.). o Enlist the help of your committee to plan a popcorn kickoff. Don t do this alone! Your most dynamic and silly leaders must be involved. o Secure decorations, snacks, music and popcorn materials (order forms, posters, etc.). o Decide on unit-level incentives (highest selling Scout throws a pie in a unit leader s face, weekly prizes for top three sellers, pizza party for all boys that sell five or more items). o Hold your unit popcorn kickoff o Review the prize program in depth with the Scouts! Most youth are motivated to hit sales goals because of prizes, not because they want to help pay their own way (even though it s a valuable lesson). o Keep Scouts motivated throughout the sale with fun competitions and prize reminders. 5 2

8 In 2015, a unit s commission percentage can easily be calculated. Forget jumping through hoops to get one, two, or three additional percentages! This calculation will be completed by the council in early October and noted in your unit s account in the popcorn system. In 2015, a unit can choose to use the prize program in the popcorn take order form. If a unit choses to use the prize program the unit will pay for the prizes at cost. If a unit decides not to use the prize program just pull the prize brochure out of the packet. All scouts participating in the sale will be eligible for high achiever prizes regardless. The order form for prizes and cost will be available on the council website. The sale ends Sunday, October 18. Manually add up all Scout popcorn orders. Use leftover popcorn to fill additional Scout orders. Place a final order (in case or container quantities) by October 20, at 11:59pm, to fill any remaining orders. Return any unsold popcorn by October 21st, from 9am to 5pm Return excel spreadsheet with scouts product sales and prize that was selected. Using the Excel spreadsheet popcorn prize order form provided by the council, complete each Scout s prize order by October 21st. Each Scout who sold at least one container should be listed on the prize order form. Pick up the final popcorn order at Fisher Beverage on November 6. Distribute popcorn to Scouts for final popcorn delivery to customers before Thanksgiving. Pay your unit s popcorn invoice by October 21st. Amount due is: retail price minus unit s commission. No commission checks are issued to units. Checks should be made out to BHAC-BSA. Checks made out to a unit will not be accepted as a form of payment to the council. Units that do not pay their bill on-time will experience a delay in receiving prizes. Congratulations! You completed the sale! Pat yourself on the back! Thank the other adults that helped make your sale a success. 7
