Product Design and Technology

What to expect from this presentation? See a range of creative ways to address each of the SAT criteria gain ideas! Help understand the SAT criteria (know what you have to do) Help give you the confidence to meet all the criteria in the SAT Be inspired!

School-assessed Task - SAT Design folio (brief, research and drawings) Production and record of progress Evaluation report, care label/user instructions Contributes to 50% of Unit 3 and 4 study score *The SAT is moderated against the exam. It is important that you complete and understand each of the criteria so that you will do well on the exam.

The folio tells a story with a beginning a middle and an end! How a good idea turned into a finished product.

Finished product can be a high-quality prototype providing that: it is constructed to exactly resemble the preferred option should meet all the evaluation criteria developed from the brief made to full scale appropriate substitute materials and processes are used

Design brief and evaluation criteria Criterion 1 End user/s profile, research, design brief and evaluation criteria Profile of end user/s Evidence of interview and/or market research Design brief including: outline of context/situation with reference to product design factors constraints and considerations expected quality Each evaluation criterion suitable for design options and finished product has four parts

End user/s profile examples Criterion 1

Evidence of end user research Criterion 1 *Top Designs Short Listed folio What evidence of end user/s research could you include in your folio? Evidence may include: Graphs Charts Q & A s Photos Measurements

Design brief and expected quality identified Criterion 1 A high-quality design brief will address all the relevant product design factors Student has identified expected quality Student has clearly highlighted the product design factors and created a code at the side of folio page.

Evaluation criteria for design options and final product Criterion 1 Criteria is used to inform and justify the selected design option as well as evaluate the success of the finished product: Each criterion has four parts: Student selected evaluation criterion from each of the relevant product design factor categories

Research and visualisations Criterion 2 Skill in conducting research and communicating developmental work. Research should include: images and information that are relevant to the brief showing an awareness of the design task annotations that explain its relevance intellectual property (IP) that is acknowledged

Creative and Critical thinking techniques Criterion 2 Graphic organisers Great way for students to plan direction of the research relevant to the brief. Shows evidence of creative design thinking Analysis of information is critical design thinking

Research Criterion 2 Research should contain both primary and secondary sources. Examples of primary include photos taken by student collecting material/fabrics taking measurements conducting market research etc.

Research and visualisations Criterion 2 Visualisations should: show a development of ideas show a connection to the research be shown alongside/near research Evidence of end user feedback must be present can be shown on research pages and/or visualisations

Design options Criterion 3 Clear and detailed presentation drawings to convey design options Features of Presentation drawings include: Intended materials identified Intended processes Exploded views Multiple views

Design options Criterion 3 Feedback from end user Intended materials shown Inspiration for design option Feedback from end user/s is a must!

Design options justified statement Criterion 3 Justification using feedback from the end user/s Evaluation criteria is discussed with end user and feedback is provided. No weighting or scoring

Production planning Criterion 4 Includes Detailed working drawings/patterns using accepted conventions identification of commercial pattern/templates and modifications made Scheduled production plan including sequence of steps, timeline and the required materials, tools, equipment and machines Risk assessment on processes, safe use of tools, equipment, machines and processes Costed materials list Explanation of quality measures Outsourcing acknowledged

Working drawings Criterion 4 For Textiles: Working drawings Front and back view is shown Drawn to scale Measurements provided Does NOT show all the pattern pieces and how it would be put together For Resistant Materials: Orthogonal/working drawings shows front, top and side view of product

Scheduled production plan Criterion 4 This student has identified that only the teacher is allowed to use the machinery in the machine room Scheduled production plan includes: Timeline/dates Work to be carried out Quality measures Tools and machinery Safety Modifications

Risk assessment Criterion 4 Risk assessment Hazards identified Level of risk identified PPE needed Safe work procedures/controls identified Control check method Identification of restricted machinery

Mockups (trial models, process trials or calico toiles) Criterion 5 Ability to document understanding of and judgments about suitability of materials and production processes, tools, equipment and machines, and explain how the product would be manufactured in industry Explanation of how the product would be manufactured in industry When you look at the products on display in Top Designs, think about: how their product would/could be manufactured what manufacturing processes would change?

Material tests Criterion 5 Material Tests undertaken should be relevant to the brief you are testing for material properties and characteristics that are required for the product

Process trials Criterion 5 photographs and documentation of the process trial

Toiles and modelling Criterion 5 Creating a calico toile, which is an example of a mock up Modelling and prototyping using plasticine to trial modelling the product to be made documented in journal

Production Criterion 6 Design folio and production work Processes are innovative and creative with a high degree of difficulty. End user/s feedback Production journal visual and written progress Application of quality measures identified in scheduled production plan Risk management identifying and managing all risks during production

Production Journal Criterion 6 Documentation can be electronic PowerPoint blog wiki Outsourcing acknowledged in documentation Gain feedback, record progress and explain and justify modifications to the end-user/s.

Criterion 6 evidence of seeking feedback from end user/s end user/s feedback should take place throughout the design and production stages.

Production Criterion 7 Skill in project management and justifying modifications in realising the preferred option Example of documentation of modifications using photos Example of documentation of modifications changes checked off with end user

Production Criterion 8 Skill in developing a quality product that is, creative and innovative. Product/Prototype needs to be: Made with accuracy and precision Highly Creative and Innovative Quality Finish Be full scale Made using appropriate materials Meets all of the requirements of the Design brief

Production Criterion 8: Quality finished products

Evaluation and user instructions/care label Criterion 9 Judgements and conclusions from testing pre-determined evaluation criteria, with end user feedback for the product End user/s feedback gathered and summarised Recommendation for improvements to the product User instructions/care label for product It is ok to say that product does not meet a criteria need to explain why!

User instructions/care label Criterion 9 Instructions/care label informs end user/s care for the product outlines features of product information about how to use/operate product May be in the form of an instructional video, annotated image of product or other multimedia format!

Evaluation on finished product Criterion 9 Evaluation of finished product - responses to each of the evaluation criteria questions -evidence of testing the product

Evaluation on finished product Criterion 9 Evidence of end user/s feedback great way to test final product is for end user/s to complete a questionnaire (or another type of survey) use Google Forms to create online questionnaire Use data gained from testing criteria combined with end user feedback to suggest areas for improvement!
