White Paper: Insights frm Mdernized IT: Mdular Cmpute Can Have a Big Impact 3 The IT Status Qu Is Being Disrupted Fr many cmpanies, risk aversin still drives IT. Given that tday s businesses depend upn digital services, IT rganizatins have traditinally and prudently priritized reliability and predictability. If an IT service becmes unavailable, ften sme prtin f the business stps. And if the business stps even fr just a few mments, revenue can be impacted. Mdern business demands fast and flexible IT. This new reality is causing a shift in pririties Mdern IT rganizatins favr speed and agility ver predictability and reliability. Fr mdern IT rganizatins, fcusing n reliability and predictability is a lsing battle and, as a result, aging IT rganizatins as defined by ESG research are struggling. Accrding t ESG research f aging IT rganizatins: 74% f IT rganizatins balance pririties f IT service delivery between reliability/predictability and speed/agility. 49% see themselves as nt delivering IT services at the right pace, r are nt aware f whether they are r nt. 32% say their line-f-business cnsumers (LOBs) are dissatisfied with the time it takes t prvisin n-premises infrastructure fr wrklads, r are nt aware f whether they are dissatisfied r nt. 31% say their LOBs are dissatisfied with the time it takes t expand n-premises infrastructure fr wrklads, r are nt aware f whether they are dissatisfied r nt. Reliability is imprtant, but given tday s IT demands, just being reliable isn t gd enugh. The Rise f the Digital Ecnmy The realities f the mdern digital ecnmy are disrupting business, which in turn is disrupting IT. With the rise f the digital ecnmy, a direct link is frming between the effective use f data and psitive business utcmes. Traditinally, IT services were required t d business like electricity, it is necessary, but nt a differentiatr. The digital ecnmy has changed this dynamic. As the use f analytics and the Internet f Things (IT) grws, data has becme mre than a necessity. Data is a differentiatr. With the advent f mdern technlgies like artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning, it is nw pssible t turn raw data int valuable insights in just minutes r hurs rather than days, weeks, r mnths. Insights frm data can help businesses better engage with their custmers, increase prductivity, and, in sme cases, intrduce new revenue streams. Older and mre traditinal cmpanies are struggling t cmpete against businesses brn tday. Mdern, digitally-defined cmpanies require fewer man-hurs t maintain systems and can deliver superir utcmes faster. In tday s digital ecnmy, faster IT equates t a cmpetitive advantage. Digitally-defined cmpanies have a huge IT advantage and are capitalizing n it with faster, mre agile IT service delivery. Yunger and mre mdernized cmpanies priritize utcmes fcused n grwth and innvatin. They can adapt their envirnment t take advantage f new technlgies, analytics, and cst advantages. These advantages equate t imprved business utcmes, which in turn enable the cllectin and analysis f mre data, which allws fr further imprved insights. In ther wrds, fr a digitallydefined business, the cmpetitive advantages in IT service delivery and data analysis have the ptential t becme bigger and bigger ver time, turning small advantages int large nes.

White Paper: Insights frm Mdernized IT: Mdular Cmpute Can Have a Big Impact 4 The Imprtance f IT Transfrmatin T help IT decisin makers and business leaders understand the imprtance f IT Transfrmatin, ESG cnducted a detailed research study designed t uncver key learnings abut bth IT Transfrmatin and the imprtance f server cmpute capabilities t transfrmatin activities and utcmes. ESG surveyed 500 IT decisin makers cvering bth large midmarket (500 t 999 emplyees) and enterprise (1,000 r mre emplyees) rganizatins acrss Nrth America (US and Canada), Western Eurpe (UK), and Asia Pacific (Australia, Hng Kng, and New Zealand). The study als spanned multiple industry verticals, including financial, manufacturing, gvernment, educatin, and health care. The study leveraged multiple questins n the adptin f bth mdern infrastructure technlgies and IT prcess autmatin t assign each rganizatin participating in the study an IT Mdernizatin maturity scre. Based n that scring, each participant rganizatin was ranked int ne f three categries in rder frm least mdernized t the highest level f mdernizatin: Aging (23%), Mdernizing (65%), and Mdernized (12%). When the data frm the Mdernized IT rganizatins were cmpared with the data frm Aging IT rganizatins, sme stark differences emerge. Fr example, Mdernized IT rganizatins: Priritize speed and agility: Mdernized IT rganizatins are 13 times mre likely than nt t mve at the right pace fr the business, 93% t 7% (see Figure 1). They accmplish this by priritizing speed and agility ver reliability and predictability. This is nt t say reliability is unimprtant; it is still expected. The fcus f IT, hwever, has shifted t speed and agility. Deliver higher satisfactin t end-users and LOBs: By fcusing n speed, agility, and innvatin, Mdernized IT rganizatins are significantly mre likely t satisfy their LOB end-users. As a result, these businesses gain in innvatin, efficiency, and increased revenue pprtunity relative t their Aging IT cunterparts. Fr example: 93% f Mdernized IT rganizatins say they are deplying IT services at the pace required by the business versus 51% f Aging IT rganizatins that can make the same claim. 96% f Mdernized IT rganizatins say their LOBs are satisfied with the time it takes t prvisin n-premises infrastructure fr wrklads versus 67% f Aging IT rganizatins. 99% f Mdernized IT rganizatins say their LOBs are satisfied with the time it takes t expand n-premises infrastructure fr wrklads versus 69% f Aging IT rganizatins. Use 4x mre mdular cmpute than Aging rganizatins: The median percentage f mdular cmpute in the data center was fur times larger in Mdernized IT rganizatins than in Aging IT rganizatins. Additinally, amng all rganizatins using mdular servers, Mdernized IT rganizatins were mre likely than Aging IT rganizatins t achieve a number f benefits as a result f using mdular servers. Fr example:

White Paper: Insights frm Mdernized IT: Mdular Cmpute Can Have a Big Impact 5 Mdernized IT rganizatins were mre than 3.5x as likely as Aging rganizatins t experience easier manageability with mdular cmpute. Mdernized IT rganizatins were mre than 2x as likely as Aging rganizatins t experience imprved flexibility with mdular cmpute. Mdernized IT rganizatins were 2x as likely as Aging rganizatins t experience faster IT service delivery with mdular cmpute. Mdernized IT rganizatins were 2x as likely as Aging rganizatins t experience higher reliability with mdular cmpute Figure 1. Mdernized IT Organizatins Deply Services at the Pace f Business Is yur IT rganizatin develping and deplying IT services at the right pace t serve the needs f the business? (Percent f respndents) Stage 1 - Aging (N=114) Stage 3 - Mdernized (N=61) 93% 51% 37% 7% 12% 0% Yes N Dn't knw There is a clear discrepancy between Mdernized IT rganizatins and their Aging IT cunterparts. While much f the success that Mdernized IT rganizatins achieve likely stems frm the strategic decisin t priritize speed and agility, the data als suggests there is a synergistic quality between priritizing speed and agility alng with utilizing mdern technlgies. Fr example, Mdernized IT rganizatins are nt nly mre likely t leverage mdular cmpute, but they als reap a greater number f benefits than their Aging IT cunterparts frm the technlgy. This research suggests that, as businesses becme increasingly data-driven, the ld Aging IT tendency t fcus slely n reliability and predictability is simply nt enugh. Beginning the Transfrmatin Jurney The benefits f Mdernized IT extend far beynd IT service delivery and the satisfactin f internal cnsumers. Mdernized IT is a fundamental step t digitally transfrming the business and reaping a greater set f rewards. Delivering IT services at the pace demanded by the business als brings with it a multitude f cmpetitive and transfrmatinal utcmes (see Figure 2). Still, Mdernized IT achieves superir benefits when cmpared t Aging IT, even when Aging IT is able t meet the pace and demands f the business.

White Paper: Insights frm Mdernized IT: Mdular Cmpute Can Have a Big Impact 6 Mdernized IT rganizatins were able t achieve each f these benefits at a higher rate. What is even mre interesting is that the mre tangible business benefits, such as the ability t better capitalize n market pprtunities and achieve higher revenues, were significantly mre cmmn amng Mdernized IT rganizatins by a rate f fur t five times. Figure 2. Business Outcmes Achieved thrugh IT Speed and Agility Which f the fllwing business utcmes has yur cmpany achieved as a result f the IT rganizatin s ability t develp and deply IT services at the right pace? (Percent f respndents, multiple respnses accepted) We are mre innvative 28% 65% We have capitalized n market pprtunities Higher revenues thrugh accelerated business initiatives 12% 16% 60% 65% Stage 3 - Mdernized (N=57) Our custmers are mre satisfied 38% 56% Stage 1 - Aging (N=58) Line-f-business end-users are mre satisfied with the IT rganizatin 43% 54% We are mre cmpetitive 26% 54% Nne f the abve 0% 3% In ther wrds, it is pssible fr Aging IT t still meet the pace f business demands. When they are able t d s, hwever, the rewards fr firms with Aging IT are significantly fewer. T stay cmpetitive, Aging IT rganizatins need t becme mre like Mdernized cmpanies t change, t be adaptable, t be flexible, and t catch up. But, what des an Aging IT cmpany need t d t get there? The simple answer is fr Aging IT cmpanies t mdel themselves after Mdernized IT rganizatins. Budgets need t shift frm maintaining existing IT t investing in future grwth areas. Organizatins need t reduce the capital and peratinal csts f Aging IT and shift their financial and persnnel resurces tward innvatin, mdern technlgy, and speed and agility. The Emergence f Transfrmatinal Wrklads As businesses seek digital transfrmatin, the intrductin f mre emergent and transfrmatinal wrklads enables the pprtunity t extract mre value frm data, but als creates new requirements fr IT. In part, the speed and agility priritized by Mdernized IT better enables the business, but an agile and flexible IT architecture is als required fr the emergent crp f transfrmatinal wrklads. When assessing the difference between traditinal and transfrmatinal wrklads, the fllwing definitins help t serve as a starting pint.

White Paper: Insights frm Mdernized IT: Mdular Cmpute Can Have a Big Impact 7 A traditinal wrklad includes mainstream wrklads such as file, print, web serving, virtual desktp, cllabrative applicatins, and cntent applicatins. A transfrmatinal wrklad includes new and emerging wrklads such as structured data analytics, unstructured data analytics (cgnitive/ai), and clud-native applicatins. In ther wrds, traditinal wrklads enable traditinal business. Transfrmatinal wrklads, n the ther hand, are designed t extract mre value ut f data and then deliver insights designed t make the cmpany smarter, mre efficient, and able t enter new markets, as well as develp new revenue streams. Transfrmatinal wrklads mre directly align t business results, and it is this alignment that drives the emphasis fr greater speed and agility. The supprting IT infrastructure cannt be the bttleneck, but must be able t adapt and evlve if the business is t stay cmpetitive. It is n surprise that Mdernized IT rganizatins assigned a higher percentage f IT resurces t transfrmatinal wrklads (see Figure 3). Fr example: 87% f Mdernized IT rganizatins allcate mre than 20% f their cmpute resurces fr transfrmatinal wrklads cmpared t nly 25% f Aging rganizatins. This increased adptin and fcus upn transfrmatinal wrklads plays a cre rle in the business success achieved by Mdernized IT cmpanies. Figure 3. Percentage f Cmpute Dedicated t Transfrmatinal Wrklads Apprximately what percentage f n-premises cmpute infrastructure yur rganizatin emplys is dedicated t transfrmatinal wrklads (as ppsed t traditinal wrklads)? (Percent f respndents) Stage 1 - Aging (N=68) Stage 3 - Mdernized (N=60) 87% 48% 13% 25% 26% 0% 1% t 20% f cmpute infrastructure 21% t 50% f cmpute infrastructure supprts transfrmatinal wrklads supprts transfrmatinal wrklads Dn t knw Transfrm the Infrastructure Achieving the necessary IT speed and agility requires a blend f the right IT persnnel and the right mdern infrastructure technlgies. When the IT rganizatins that identified themselves as being able t keep pace with business demands were then asked t identify the reasns behind their delivery success, Mdernized IT rganizatins were far mre likely t identify the rle that the infrastructure technlgy played in their success (see Figure 4).

White Paper: Insights frm Mdernized IT: Mdular Cmpute Can Have a Big Impact 8 Fr example, Mdernized IT rganizatins are: 3x mre likely t reprt infrastructure adaptability as ne f the biggest reasns behind their IT service delivery success. 2x mre likely t reprt infrastructure scalability as ne f the biggest reasns behind their IT service delivery success. 2x mre likely t reprt infrastructure flexibility as ne f the biggest reasns behind their IT service delivery success. 1.75x mre likely t reprt infrastructure perfrmance as ne f the biggest reasns behind their IT service delivery success. In ther wrds, Aging IT is als capable f delivering IT services n time, albeit less ften, but their success may be mre likely the result f hard wrk by the persnnel. Mdernized IT rganizatins, n the ther hand, are mre likely t achieve success thanks t the capabilities f bth their persnnel and their technlgy. Figure 4. Tp Seven Reasns Behind IT Service Delivery Success Which f the fllwing are the biggest reasns why the IT rganizatin is successful develping and deplying IT services at the right pace t serve the needs f the business? 9 White Paper: Insights frm Mdernized IT: Mdular Cmpute Can Have a Big Impact 9 Rle f Mdular Cmpute in IT Transfrmatin A critical element in the deplyment f mdern IT infrastructure is the use f mdular server technlgy. Accrding t ESG s research, mdular servers cmprise a significantly larger percentage f the verall cmpute in Mdernized IT data centers with a median f 20% versus Aging IT with a median f nly 5%. What are the perceptins hlding IT rganizatins back frm greater adptin f mdular cmpute? The data in Figure 5 highlights the tp five mst cmmn reasns that hinder IT rganizatins frm deplying mdular server technlgy amng IT rganizatins that d nt currently use mdular servers. The mst cmmnly identified cncern was cst (30%), fllwed by ther factrs such as a lack f flexibility, and the perceptin that the servers are difficult t administer. Figure 5. Tp Five Mst Cmmn Reasns fr Nt Deplying a Mdular Server Slutin Fr which f the fllwing reasns has yur rganizatin nt deplyed a mdular server slutin int yur envirnment? (Percent f respndents, N=119, multiple respnses accepted) T expensive 30% Inflexible platfrm 20% Difficult t administer 19% Limitatins n strage capacity 17% Fear f vendr lck-in 17% Respndents t this questin, hwever, verwhelmingly indicated that, if a mdular cmpute slutin was available that addressed the cncern(s) they identified, they wuld likely change their mind abut mdular server technlgy. This willingness t recnsider was even mre dramatic amng Mdernized IT rganizatins, wh were 12 times mre likely t change their mind, versus the aggregate f all study participants, wh identified a willingness at a rate f 5 t 1. This increased willingness t integrate mdular server technlgy by Mdernized IT rganizatins prvides further evidence t supprt the ntin that Mdernized IT rganizatins value the ptential f new technlgy and are mre willing t integrate newer technlgies if thse technlgies ffer superir capabilities. Interestingly, hwever, the cncerns identified in Figure 5 appear t cnflict with the set f data in Figure 6, cllected frm rganizatins that currently leverage mdular servers, suggesting that sme miscnceptins exist fr mdular server slutins amng nnusers. The Value f Mdular Cmpute When users f mdular servers were asked t identify the benefits that they received frm the technlgy (see Figure 6), the mst cmmnly identified benefit was increased scalability (57%), fllwed by imprved flexibility (54%) and easier manageability (50%). When this data is placed side by side and cmpared t the cncerns f thse rganizatins that d nt leverage mdular servers (see Figure 5), almst every tp cncern is identified as a benefit by a significant prprtin

White Paper: Insights frm Mdernized IT: Mdular Cmpute Can Have a Big Impact 10 f users. In additin, the percentage f users that received a particular benefit is greater than the percentage f nnusers that identified the cncern. Fr example: 54% f mdular cmpute users identified benefits t increased flexibility, as ppsed t nly 20% f nn-users wh identified the cncern that the platfrms were inflexible. 50% f mdular cmpute users identified ease f management as a benefit, as ppsed t nly 19% f nn-users wh identified that the platfrms were difficult t administer. This trend even cntinues fr cst, as 39% f users identified lwer prcurement csts as a benefit, as ppsed t nly 30% f nn-users that identified that mdular servers were t expensive. One argument fr these discrepancies culd be that IT rganizatins with higher demands might still have cncerns with mdular server technlgy, while thse rganizatins with lighter demands achieved benefits. This argument fails, hwever, as in nearly every case, Mdernized IT rganizatins were mre likely t receive a specific benefit than Aging IT users. Figure 6. Benefits Realized frm a Mdular Server Slutin Which f the fllwing benefits has yur rganizatin experienced due t its deplyment f mdular server slutins int yur envirnment? (Percent f respndents, multiple respnses accepted) Increased scalability 47% 76% Easier t manage 21% 76% Stage 3 - Mdernized (N=42) Imprved flexibility Faster deplyments/delivery f services 29% 26% 69% 55% Stage 1 - Aging (N=34) Higher reliability 26% 52% Lwer prcurement cst 38% 41% The mre likely ratinale fr the discrepancy is that there are still miscnceptins abut mdular cmpute. And thse miscnceptins may stem primarily frm Aging IT rganizatins. Aging IT rganizatins are likely t have a smaller mdular cmpute ftprint and achieve benefits at a lwer rate. One example that supprts the thery that the discrepancy is a result f miscnceptins abut mdular cmpute is that cst was the cncern mst cmmnly identified by Aging IT envirnments (35%). Aging IT users f mdular server slutins, hwever, identified that they achieved lwer prcurement csts at a rate f 41%, the nly benefit that Aging IT achieved at a higher rate than Mdernized IT rganizatins. It may be

White Paper: Insights frm Mdernized IT: Mdular Cmpute Can Have a Big Impact 11 that the emergence f new pay-as-yu-g payment and leasing ptins culd be helping t address the initial acquisitin csts f mdular server slutins, even fr Aging IT envirnments. Or it culd be that Aging IT started frm a higher infrastructure cst pint prir t switching t mdular server technlgy. When users f mdular servers were asked t apprximate the average benefits delivered by the technlgy, the benefits reprted were far mre substantial fr Mdernized IT than fr Aging IT. Fr Mdernized IT, each f the fur benefits surveyed were reprted t be higher n average, and fr three f the fur, the benefit reprted was clse t duble that f Aging IT envirnments. Figure 7. Quantified Benefits Realized frm Mdular Servers Average benefit f mdular servers vs. what was in use prir/alternatives. (Mean) Stage 1 - Aging Stage 3 - Mdernized 32% 33% 40% 32% 35% 17% 18% 17% Percent f prcurement csts reduced by buying mdular servers cmpared t alternatives (N=107) Percent f time reduced administering mdular servers cmpared t previus slutin(s) (N=137) Percent f reduced service Percent f reduced utages f mdular deplyment time by using servers cmpared t mdular servers previus slutin(s) cmpared t alternatives (N=125) (N=98) Why Des Mdernized IT Use Mdular Servers? Ultimately, mdular cmpute is a pwerful and incredibly beneficial technlgy that plays a critical rle in bth IT Transfrmatin and in enabling the success f Mdernized IT rganizatins. When cmbined, the research data presents a cmpelling case fr why Mdernized IT rganizatins leverage mdular server technlgy. Increased scalability: Mre than three ut f fur (76%) Mdernized IT rganizatins using mdular servers selected increased scalability, making it the mst cmmnly identified benefit f mdular servers. In additin, nearly half (49%) f Mdernized IT rganizatins mving at the right pace fr their business credited IT infrastructure scalability as a factr respnsible fr their success in timely IT service delivery. In ther wrds, Mdernized IT relies n scalable architecture and mdular servers deliver. Easier management: Tied fr the mst cmmnly identified benefit amng Mdernized IT rganizatins using mdular servers (76%), the simplified management f mdular servers delivers significant savings t IT. On average, the imprved ease f administratin f mdular servers reduced administratin time by 33%.

White Paper: Insights frm Mdernized IT: Mdular Cmpute Can Have a Big Impact 12 Imprved flexibility: Mdular servers delivered greater flexibility fr mre than tw ut f every three (69%) Mdernized IT rganizatins using them. 46% f Mdernized IT rganizatins credited flexibility and 51% credited adaptability f their infrastructure as factrs respnsible fr their success in timely IT service delivery. The flexibility f mdular servers plays a key rle in IT service delivery. Faster deplyment/delivery f services: Mre than half (55%) f Mdernized IT rganizatins that use mdular servers reprted imprvements in infrastructure deplyment time. The average benefit was a 35% reductin in time spent. Mdular severs nt nly speed up delivery, but als free up resurce time fr ther, pssibly higher value, tasks. Increased reliability: 52% f Mdernized IT rganizatins using mdular servers cited an imprvement in reliability, helping t reduce service utages by an average f 40%. While Mdernized IT priritizes speed and agility, reliability is still a necessity and the data suggest mdular servers deliver agility while simultaneusly imprving reliability. Lwer cst: Despite being the mst cmmn cncern amng nn-users, lwer prcurement cst was cited as a benefit by 38% f Mdernized IT rganizatins, with an average saving f 32%. Reducing csts by nearly a third while simultaneusly delivering the ther benefits mentined makes a pwerful case in favr f leveraging mdular servers. The benefits f mdular servers align almst directly with the pririties f Mdernized IT. Mdular servers deliver benefits in speed, agility, simplificatin, reliability, and cst nt nly at a high rate but the average impact f each benefit is substantial. While there are likely sme miscnceptins abut mdular server technlgy, the data suggests that mdular servers play a key rle in enabling Mdernized IT rganizatins. The Bigger Truth As industries becme mre digitally defined, IT demands quickly exceed the capabilities f Aging IT rganizatins, t the extent that they cannt meet the requirements f their cnsumers, r wrse, they d nt knw whether they are meeting them. Building a Mdernized IT rganizatin is nt nly beneficial, it has becme a necessity. And, the rewards fr the agile and speedy delivery f IT are substantial. Businesses with Mdernized IT are mre innvative, capture mre market pprtunities, achieve higher revenue, imprve custmer satisfactin, and are simply mre cmpetitive.

White Paper: Insights frm Mdernized IT: Mdular Cmpute Can Have a Big Impact 13 Fr Aging IT rganizatins, transfrmatin is a must. There are multiple steps t the IT transfrmatin jurney: the adptin f emerging and transfrmatinal wrklads, the increase f autmatin, and the use f mdern technlgies. Frm the cmpute side, mdular server technlgy has an answer, allwing rganizatins t deliver substantial benefits t speed, agility, cst, and reliability. Mdular servers ffer the benefits Mdernized IT rganizatins require, enabling bth the IT rganizatin and the larger business t succeed. And mst imprtantly, the data reveals that there is a multiplier effect when Mdernized IT and mdular server technlgy are cmbined. The benefits are larger and mre prevalent. In an era where business cmpetitiveness is defined by digital capabilities, the IT rganizatin becmes a differentiatr. Giving yur IT rganizatin the best tls t succeed, such as mdular servers, may be the difference between thriving in this digital ecnmy, and just being part f the status qu.
