In rder t achieve the desired results, learning befre, during, and after everything we d must be part f the way we wrk at the IDB -nt smething extra. The IDB has develped several methdlgical tls that will help Bank persnnel and their reginal stakehlders identify, capture, and as applicable, share their knwledge fr re-use by thers. As shwn in Figure 1, these methds t mainstream learning frm ur individual and cllective experience in every phase f ur prject cycle (and ther key peratinal prcesses) include the After Actin Review, 1 In Actin Review, 2 Peer Assist, 3 Knwledge and Capture Interview. Knwledge captured using these methds can be analyzed and rganized using the Knwledge t Actin methdlgy, 4 which prduces and rganizes actinable Key Learnings fr re-use by their target audience(s). Key Learnings captured frm individual prjects can help teams slve current peratinal challenges and imprve perfrmance indicatrs. The cumulative capture f Key Learnings frm multiple prjects in a specific cuntry, (sub-)sectr, r business prcess allw fr the cmpilatin and validatin f a critical mass f relevant knwledge, which can be disseminated effectively thrugh an integrated nline knwledge base and/r be leveraged t develp r update training r ther capacity building effrts. The Knwledge Capture Interview (KCI) is ne f the methds used within the Bank s cycle t learn frm experience. Specifically, it is a learning after ding technique that helps teams identify and share what wrked and what hasn t wrked, s that thers within their family f prjects (cuntry, sectr, r subsectr prtfli) can take advantage f what has been learned. The KCI is a technique used t identify and capture effective practices and learnings derived frm the experience f the persn(s) being interviewed. Key characteristics f a successful KCI are its emphasis n the interviewee s experiences and perspective (cntext rich), and its fcus n ging beynd the first layer f knwledge t reach the deeper levels f understanding t make explicit the previusly tacit fundamental causes r attributes f the issues being discussed. What is the value added f a Knwledge Capture Interview? Knwledge Capture Interviews are a quick and efficient way t capture valuable knwledge frm participants in a prject, event, r rganizatinal prcess, s that it can be shared with thers wh may need it t supprt their decisin making fr better perfrmance and results. They can als be leveraged t cnduct exit interviews when a persn leaves a prject, team, rganizatinal unit, r the Bank. 6 Is ideally suited fr end f phase/prject learning fr disseminatin t ther audiences, but it des nt directly supprt team r relatinship building. This apprach can engage IDB prject team members, gvernment cunterparts, private sectr partners, prject beneficiaries, and ther key stakehlders f the prject, either separately, tgether, r bth. KCI and After Actin Reviews (AAR) are ften used tgether t cmplement the value added each brings. Hw can I set up Knwledge Capture Interviews and what supprt is available? Knwledge Capture Interviews require relatively little lead time t prepare and execute and are typically cnducted with ne persn at a time (r a few peple wh share the same rle/perspective). They take 1 hur (and n mre than 90 minutes) each, making them relatively easy t plan and schedule. It is imprtant t define the general purpse and scpe f the knwledge yu wuld like t capture and wh the target audience is fr disseminatin. The KNL team is available t prvide in-depth methdlgical and facilitatin supprt t plan and cnduct KCIs, and determine the best way t dcument and disseminate their utcmes. Prepare: Cllect and review relevant backgrund infrmatin t establish baseline understanding f tpic/prject/prcess/activities under review Establish the purpse and scpe f the knwledge capture effrt, identify key participants and key issues t address, any ptential risks, and schedule interviews at least ne week in advance, if pssible, and Prvide each interviewee with the purpse, scpe, and duratin f the interview, as well as a few sample questins, and hw yu plan t use the utput frm the interview in advance as part f the invitatin, s he/she understands why he/she is being asked t participate and has a chance t start thinking abut the tpic. Cnduct interview: Review with the interviewee the purpse and scpe f the interview and answer any questins r cncerns he/she may have. Explain hw the utput (ntes r recrding transcript) frm the interview will be used and that the interviewee will have an pprtunity t review and validate the utput befre it is disseminated (if applicable) Apprach the interview as an pen cnversatin -nt a simple Q&A- fcused n deepening understanding and rt cause analysis, using fllw up questins. As the interviewer: Ask pen-ended questins rather than nes with yes r n answers, Fllw the energy and interests f the interviewee, Limit yur ft print as much as pssible. Refrain frm sharing stries r pinins, 3

Cnfirm next steps with the interviewee. Create interview deliverables: Knwledge capture interview utputs can be used t create knwledge prducts (e.g. case study, technical nte, be distilled int actinable Key Learnings using the K2A 5 prcess, r used t surce ther disseminatin r publicatin frmats (web stries, presentatins etc.).
