Supply chain management therefre invlves the crdinatin f multiple value-creating prcesses that typically fragmented and dispersed acrss rganizatinal and natinal bundaries. This fragmentatin creates pprtunities (e.g. lwer csts) but als challenges (e.g. lnger lead times). Firms therefre need t find a way t explit the benefits prvided by fragmented supply chains, while making sure that the challenges are managed effectively. This curse will expse students t the challenges invlved in managing supply chains and understand the cmplexity f inter-firm and intra-firm crdinatin. In additin t the basic challenges and trade-ffs assciated with reducing csts and increasing respnsiveness, we will als discuss ther supply chain issues such as surcing and the need fr greater transparency in supply chains. We will als discuss the relatinship between supply chain management and sustainability. The gal f the curse is t develp a framewrk t address a variety f supply chain management challenges. COURSE MATERIALS & REQUIREMENTS Reading Materials: There is n textbk, but the readings packages include relevant excerpts frm varius surces. The lecture ntes will be psted n the class website befre each class. Required readings: The required readings fr each class are nted in the belw, and are included in the curse package r in the ereserve BASC 500 page available thrugh the Library

Optinal readings: Optinal readings are included in the ereserve BASC 500 page available thrugh the Library. Other readings (usually frm the business press r newspapers) will be made available thrugh n-line access. Links t access these ptinal readings will be annunced n the class website as they are psted. Other Learning Resurces: The BASC 500 ereserve Library page, and the Cnnect website. Technlgy Requirements: Sme class activities require a laptp. Activity Fees: We will play the Harvard Glbal Supply Chain Simulatin game in class, which will require a fee The readings fall int three categries: 1. Abslutely required (in bld fnt n syllabus belw), since students will be cld-called in class t answer questins abut them: Outcme Driven Supply Chains article Crdinatin: An Overview article SCM Hng Kng Style article Making Supply Meet Demand in an Uncertain Wrld 2. Semi-required: there will nt be frmal discussin questins and cld-calling (in nrmal fnt n syllabus belw): Bullwhip Effect article What is the right supply chain fr yur prducts? Article Aligning Incentives article Strategic Surcing article SC Transparency article 3. Ttally ptinal, but enriching. Materials might be psted n the Cnnect website. ASSESSMENT Student learning will be assessed thrugh the fllwing assignments, with these weights: In-class assessments: Class participatin: 15% Other assessments: In-class grup case mems (Barilla, Sprt Obermeyer): 40% In-class individual case mems (Exel and Haus Mart) 15% Perfrmance in grup Supply Chain Simulatin Game: 15% Individual case analysis (Bergerac): 15% - 3 -

EXPECTATIONS Students are expected t shw up t every class n time (if yu must miss a class fr sme reasn, yu must me t let me knw the reasn; yu will lse class participatin marks if yu miss class and yu dn t ntify me), t have read the required readings, and t be prepared t answer the discussin questins abut each reading. I will cld-call students in class t assess yur attendance and yur degree f preparatin. Every student is expected t cntribute questins and cmments frm time t time, withut dminating the class discussin. As the classes prgress I will try t fcus n students wh have nt cntributed much befre that pint t diversity the discussin and give everyne a chance t cntribute. I will keep recrds after each class f wh cntributed and the quality f their cntributin, and I will base the class participatin grade n these recrds. This means that there is n way fr yu t appeal yur class participatin mark

TEACHING & LEARNING ACTIVITIES The classes will revlve arund discussing the material in the ntes, in the readings, and ne case. Students are expected t have read the readings, the case, and the articles, and cme t class prepared t answer questins abut them. In additin, students are expected t be able t relate the material presented in class t their prir business experience if called upn t d s. Discussin Questins fr the Outcme-Driven Supply Chains article fr class SCM 1 Imprtant nte: Yu d nt have t prepare written answers t these questins t hand in. Hwever, I will randmly call n students t give answers t these questins in class, and s yu shuld be prepared t give an answer. Here are the questins, in rughly the rder in which they appear in the article: 1. The article defines six pssible utcmes that a supply chain might aim at. Briefly define each utcme: Cst Respnsiveness Security Resilience Innvatin Sustainability 2. The article argues that sme blending f these utcmes is desirable. Why? 3. The article argues that trying t d all six utcmes equally is bad. Why? 4. The article argues that sme utcmes blend well tgether. Which utcmes des it suggest, and why? 5. The article suggests that sme utcmes blend tgether prly. Which utcmes des it suggest, and why? And ne ther questin t pnder that I wn t cld-call abut: The key design traits in the table n page 37 ften map int the Operatins Triangle. Hw wuld yu place the six utcmes n the Operatins Triangle? Discussin Questins fr the Crdinatin: An Overview article fr class SCM 9, the SCM Hng Kng Style article fr class SCM 10 and Making Supply Meet Demand in an Uncertain Wrld article fr class SCM 13 Based n past experience, it is unlikely that we will have enugh time t discuss these articles in class, s fr the mment n discussin questins fr them will be psted. Hwever, these articles are quite infrmative, and I strngly encurage yu t read them anyway. Mem Questins fr the Barilla (A) case due the after dinner n Friday Imprtant ntes: Yu shuld frm yur wn team f 2-3 students. Each team shuld prepare a rughly five-page answer t the questins belw (yu can include supprting - 7 -

analyses in appendices if yu want). Yu shuld avid tiny fnts and narrw margins, but therwise feel free t frmat yur answer as yu wish. The mems shuld be submitted t the curse Cnnect website by 8:15pm n Friday, 4 December (the start f class SCM 3). Late submissins will nt be accepted. Please include the student numbers f the three members f the team n yur submissin, but nt yur names. Yur mem shuld address the fllwing questins: 1) What are the prblems that Barilla is experiencing that the JITD (Just In Time Delivery) prgram is intended t address? 2) In Barilla s envirnment f 1990, frm the viewpint f Barilla, d yu think that JITD wuld be feasible? Effective? a) If s, what distributrs wuld yu target next? Hw wuld yu cnvince them that the JITD prgram was wrth trying? b) If nt, what alternatives wuld yu suggest t cmbat sme f the difficulties that Barilla s perating system faces? 3) What cnflicts r barriers internal t Barilla des the JITD prgram create? What causes these cnflicts? As Girgi Maggiali, hw wuld yu deal with these? 4) As ne f Barilla s distributrs, what wuld yur respnse t JITD be? Why? Nte that yu d nt have t answer each questin separately; if yu feel that tw (r mre) questins are clsely related, feel free t answer them tgether. Hwever, yu must answer all questins t get full marks. Yu shuld bring a cpy f yur mem t class and be ready t talk abut yur analyses in class. Mem Questins fr the Sprt Obermeyer case due Saturday mrning Imprtant ntes: Yu shuld frm yur wn team f 2-3 students. Each team shuld prepare a rughly five-page answer t the questins belw (yu can include supprting analyses in appendices if yu want). Yu shuld avid tiny fnts and narrw margins, but therwise feel free t frmat yur answer as yu wish. The mems shuld be submitted t the curse Cnnect website by 1:00pm n Saturday, 5 December (the start f class SCM 7). Late submissins will nt be accepted. Please include the student numbers f the three members f the team n yur submissin, but nt yur names. Yur mem shuld address the fllwing questins: 1) Using the sample data given in Exhibit 10 (spreadsheet will be psted n the Cnnect website), make a recmmendatin fr hw many units f each style Wally Obermeyer shuld rder during the initial phase f prductin. Assume that all ten styles in the sample prblem are made in Hng Kng, and that Obermeyer s initial prductin cmmitment must be exactly 10,000 units. (Yu may make reasnable simplifying assumptins t supprt yur analysis.) 2) In general, hw shuld Wally Obermeyer apprach the prblem f deciding hw many units f each style he shuld rder fr the first phase f prductin? 3) Hw shuld Obermeyer management think (bth shrt-term and lng-term) abut surcing in Hng Kng versus China? 4) What peratinal changes wuld yu recmmend t Wally t imprve perfrmance? - 8 -

Nte that yu d nt have t answer each questin separately; if yu feel that tw (r mre) questins are clsely related, feel free t answer them tgether. Hwever, yu must answer all questins t get full marks. Yu shuld bring a cpy f yur mem t class and be ready t talk abut yur analyses in class as a team. Mem Questin fr the Exel/Haus Mart case due Sunday mrning Imprtant ntes: The mem fr this case is t be dne individually. Each student shuld prepare a rughly tw-page answer fr each case t the questins belw (yu can include supprting analyses in appendices if yu want). Yu shuld avid tiny fnts and narrw margins, but therwise feel free t frmat yur answer as yu wish. Nte that fr these individual case mems, I am expecting less depth f analysis than fr the grup case mems. The Exel/Haus Mart mem shuld be submitted via the curse Cnnect website by 10:50am n Sunday, 6 December (start f class 12). Late submissins will nt be accepted. Please include yur student number n yur submissin, but nt yur name. Yur Exel/Haus Mart mem shuld address the fllwing questin: 1. Shuld Exel mve int jint planning with Haus Mart? Why r why nt? Please be as specific as pssible. Other questins yu shuld cnsider as backgrund material fr yur case write-up and fr class discussin (yur mem des nt have t explicitly answer these questins, but yu shuld be ready t talk abut them in class): 2. Hw is value added in supply chain management thrugh better planning versus better executin? 3. Why d cmpanies utsurce freight management and cntract lgistics t third-party lgistics prviders (3PLs)? Why d 3PLs perfrm these activities better? 4. Hw wuld a deep understanding f supply chain executin and strnger capabilities in executin allw cmpanies t make better supply chain planning decisins? Again, please be as specific as pssible. Fr example, hw wuld a better understanding f executin lead t better inventry-management decisins? Fr the Exel/Haus Mart case yu shuld have a cpy f yur mem available fr class SCM 12 and be ready t talk abut yur analysis in class
