3 The Green Event Module 2 Teaching Example Name Make Up Your Mind Decision-Making Grid Grid Analysis helps you to make a decision when you have many good options. To use the tool, lay out your choices top to bottom on the side of the grid. Place the criteria across the top of the grid. Then, order the criteria from least important (lowest number) to most important (highest number). Score each choice for each criteria using numbers from 0 (poor) to 3 (very good). Multiply each score by the weight of the criteria to show its importance in the decision. Finally add up the total scores for each option. Select the highest scoring option. Example- Domingo is new to town and is having some friends over tonight to hang-out, He has to decide what to do for entertainment. He must choose between- watching a movie, playing board games, watching TV, and playing capture the flag in the park. Domingo loves to rent new movies, but his friends love to play capture the flag. He doesn t have a lot of money, but he wants to get to know the kids in hs neighborhood better, and the other ideas are just as good. He can t decide what to do so he puts it in a grid. 5 Scenarios for Make Up Your Mind Game Hand-out 1 Scenario Per Group Teacher s Print Outs Scenario #1: Your mom suggests that you invite several of your friends over for a birthday party for you Friday after school. She tells you, though, that you only have $25.00 to spend to rent a movie and pay for the food and snacks. You rent the movie for $5.00. Now you must decide on what food to buy. You consider 4 choices: A. Apples, Cheese, and Crackers with Milk (You feed 10) B. Chips and Salsa and Pop (You feed 20) C. Fruit Pizza and Milk (You feed 10) D. Pizza and Pop (You feed 8) SAMPLE CRITERIA: Taste, Nutrition, Easy to eat while watching the movie, Size of the Party/ Number of Friends, Cost, Prep Time, and Personal Preference. Scenario #2: Your mom agrees to take you school shopping for new clothes for school. You know that your mom will not buy any additional clothes for you until Christmas. She agrees to spend only $70.00, but you can decide how and what you spend it on. You absolutely need a new pair of jeans. You really want a new coat from your favorite store. You should get new shoes before winter. You consider 4 choices: A. Buy the coat you want from your favorite store - $ B. Find a pair of jeans from the DI - $5.00 and do extra chores for a week for $5.00, and buy the coat you want - $ C. Go to the store your mom suggests which is having a sale on jeans and coats. Buy a coat for $50.00, a pair of jeans for $10.00, and a pair of cheap shoes for $ D. Go to a store and buy a cool pair of jeans and shoes. You want to buy a new bicycle that costs $ Your parents have told you that if you save for the bicycle, they will pay half ($50.00). Otherwise they will give you $ You also want a video game that costs $ Sometimes you have the tendency of losing money you don t save. You consider 4 choices: A. Have your parents buy the video game, and put the money from your relatives in the bank. No bike for 6 months. B. Save the money from your relatives, and earn $20.00 in chores and allowance in 2 months. Buy the bike with the help of your parents in 2 months. C. Have your parents buy you the video game. Keep the $35.00 to spend on class field trips and snacks after school. No bike. D. Put your parents $35.00 in the bank, and keep the $35.00 to spend on class field trips and snacks after school.
