2 The First Saskatchewan Food Summit Participant Evaluation Poor Average Good Very Good Excellent No Answer 4 The TCU venue was: / / / / 71 2 / % 19.72% 54.93% 14.08% 2.82% Comments 1 Food was poor 2 Food choices could have been healthier i.e. high fat choices for breakfast - white bread for sandwiches - was any of it local? 3 Sound System 4 Great sound and tech support. I understood TCU could not provide a local menu - this is unfortunate - so maybe the conference should have been held somewhere that could seriously! It is embarrassing and leaves a hopeless bad feeling on a great conference! It is an opportunity to work with TCU and educate them so they can offer it to other conferences - should be the first action item. If this group isn't doing it - who will? If TCU was providing local food it should be labelled as such 5 More local food would be nice 6 Would like local food 7 Great job Linda and organizing committee Poor Average Good Very Good Excellent No Answer 5 The Farmer's Market Venue was: / / / / / % 16.90% 28.17% 21.13% 25.35% Comments 1 Would like more comfortable accommodations, stronger presence of product and vendor Yes No Neither Yes or No - Comments 6 Would you participate in future Summits? / 71 5 / % 0.00% 7.04% Comments 1 Maybe x 2 2 Not known first food summit Evaluation results.xls

3 first food summit Evaluation results.xls The First Saskatchewan Food Summit Participant Evaluation 7 Are there additional session topics you would like to see? a Fewer topics - I felt topic overload - or move to having concurrent sessions so folks can focus on their interest b Conference in future may want to do something more in depth on one or two of the themes. Hold it in various centres; many excellent presenters, but too many of them. Allow for longer nutrition / networking breaks; conference very Saskatoon orientated. Did not attract a broad audience; right from first question asked of first speakers, there was a negative undertone (sometimes overtone) that did not sit well with me; I learned a great deal during the table talk (break out) sessions and found people to be more positive there than at the mikes; hope the PowerPoint's are posted online c More government representation d Government Civil servant and elected officials leadership actually in a position to influence change on a panel. Stated goals? Social, economic, environmental e More participation of policy makers / legislators to listen to and understand burning problem and suggestions for improvement f Great mix of people, good to involve Sask Health & land planner groups; somehow need to attract more producers: have reps from Canola growers, Pulse growers, etc. involve Farm Credit Canada and / or other lending agencies g More representatives from other "larger" chain - those in higher government positions h More industry input - representation - higher levels of government to talk to strategy / policy including Education, Health, Agriculture i More CFIA and provincial regulations insight. To hear from the Canadian Wheat Board. To have Toronto Food Policy Council speak j Education, routes of communication k Food preparation of local foods (Chef talk) l We need to first develop local and than export m More on smaller scale distribution / market channels, e.g.. restaurant sales n Maybe a session on Nutrition covering state of the art of nutrition guidelines; healthy eating and cooking; and food habits and how to change them o Food security and waste p Land trusts, incubator farms, farm apprenticeships, non-profit community economic development. q Issues more specific to greenhouse growers r Breeding an individual responsibility in breeding s Global perspective of resource use; production models. Perspective of global and Canadian risks to food production t Improved environmental management in food production u Labelling re GMO's products and ingredients; labelling re??? foods; how to access local product campaign, website to access v Entrance into small and mid-range retail outlets; discussion of a hub for small local producers w What is governments (fed, prov, civic) long term vision for food and agriculture - what are we up against? x Could have more larger fruit, vegetable growers etc.?? y Really understanding the value-chain and highlighting impediments to overcome and finding solutions z Research and development aa Value addition to food production bb Engaging the consumer and educate the consumer

5 first food summit Evaluation results.xls The First Saskatchewan Food Summit Participant Evaluation 7 Are there additional session topics you would like to see? Continued cc Food Regulation Summit dd Policy development ee Success in Canada (or us) ff "Towards a vision statement" - how organizations and businesses, etc. Can create visions gg Pros and Cons of Marketing Coops or Boards like "Peak of the Market" hh Balancing needs of producers and low-income consumers 8 Other Comments a Good job look forward to more summits b Thank you c Great job - diverse d Excellent - thanks e Excellent chair-person f Good start g Excellent method of deciding on priorities (ex. Dots on pages) h Thank you - valuable. Enjoyed the diversity of topic and participants. Breakout session handled well i This was a learning experience of great magnitude. All information provided was quite informative and helpful. Hopefully we can have more of these food summits to engage more policy makers and individuals. Organic workshop (Regina) - start again. Access to Market and Competition. Farmer Direct Cooperative. j Farmer's Market venue novel but not set up too well k Food service should have been using local suppliers & producers. Most of the topics were related to existing food systems while local food systems should have been further explored. Elaborate on collective approaches to rural development l Local food at TCU? m Meals at TCU Place did not reflect the goal of the summit, which is a local sustainable food system; they should do so - need opportunity for people to form special interest groups (based on common interests) - where was the National Farmer's Union? n More local / organic foods for lunch and dinner o Too much white / wonder bread. TCUP could include some more Saskatchewan made food p Let some natural light into the space and place screen on other side of room (opposite food) q A little too much organic r This was a "food summit" but it seemed to morph into a local food, organic food discussion. The larger picture has to be addressed. I have some concern that some "organic" people can throw out unsubstantiated allegations about non-organic food and production that is not supported by science. This affects their credibility and allocates them to the "fringe" of food production s Too much commenting from organics. Local food and food in general is very much more than organics t Question and Answer sessions great idea but became more of a "comment / bitch" session. Ask them to take advantage of speaker panel and ask question vs. serving self-interests. u Place speaker lapel mike on side facing the power point (so voice doesn't fade out when looking at the power point screen.)

6 The First Saskatchewan Food Summit Participant Evaluation v w x y z aa bb cc dd ee ff gg hh ii jj kk Nutrition breaks should have more nutritious food - less gooey pastries i.e. oranges - bananas - cheese - apples - less sugary items such as banana bread and muffins. This is a community issue. The range of delegates was very good except for the lack of politicians that can drive change at local, provincial and federal levels - but an excellent start. Next summit - invite provincial / federal politicians to a panel - they will show up or be embarrassed by the media stories that follow. Keep expanding the invitees. More interaction between regulators at meetings. Brainstorming session on specific policy and vision of a sustainable ag system Great diversity of speakers - most of the stakeholders were here What about "Local Food"? Many small producers would like to hear about places to market their products re: Farmer's Market This was a great opportunity to get together cross-sectorally and have some important conversations. Would like to see definite encapsulated (short term and long term goals that would exact commitment and continued active content I would like to see this as an annual event and one that develops a vision and goal - something tangible. I loved that such a diversity of groups were represented but where were the politicians? - federal, provincial, local, ruling parties and opposition parties. Overall really good; but we need action items and commitment from all players to move forward on developing and making ideas reality For a sustainable food production system to happen, all players must convene to help construct this holistic goal for the province regarding food, and to help plan the path towards that goal. This includes levels of government Some of the content was just more of the same we need to think ourselves beyond the norm and expand the opportunities for development Maybe have some decision making government reps attend There were diverse interests represented here, so much so that specific opportunities could not be fully explored, e.g. from farm gate sales to selling to Loblaw's - huge spread Hear from actual growers about there difficulties / achievements - need chefs and restaurants to attend; could hear perhaps from actual consumers Group sessions need to be far more focused! Many people left during the day and came in late. Copies of presentations should be included. Should always start the 2nd day later when hosting a 2 day event. Never start at 8 am downtown, anywhere. Serve locally sourced food. Unfortunate the Food Centre didn't speak. They were mentioned during many comments. Really need to keep a more positive tone. Would value printed copies of PowerPoint - thank you, just announced would be made available on the website. Really excellent idea! Speakers! Collaboration. Would like to know Canadian - Saskatchewan servers strive to learn from other provinces - announce success Some topics not relevant Very interesting / interactive. Days were very full,?? Over 3 days, for future years first food summit Evaluation results.xls
