7 The Weekend Edition Saturday, October 11, 2014 AN EDITION OF THE IONIA SENTINEL-STANDARD PINK WARRIOR FUNDRAISER Beth Trierweiler daughter, sister, aunt, friend, dependable employee, college student, self-proclaimed comedian, lifelong resident of Portland, Michigan, and an almost four-year cancer survivor. You can t prepare yourself to learn that you have cancer, no matter what your circumstance. As I waited for the doctor to come in with my results, I joked around with my carpool pal and friend, who insisted on coming to my appointment with me. I had had three previous biopsies in other areas that had all been tested and deemed benign. As we tried to make sense of the CT scan of my head/neck area that was on the lighted board, cracking jokes about the empty, hole-like spaces, we found ourselves laughing, making light of the long waiting time typically experienced in a specialty medical practice. I felt comfortable with this physician, as he had been treating me for a couple of years prior to me making him aware of this lump behind my ear. He entered the room and I said in a cheerful voice, Hi, I hope you have some good news for me? He replied, I m sorry, I don t. He proceeded to tell me it was cancer. I was diagnosed with Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid gland (salivary), Stage 0. The Stage 0 was excellent news. However, the type of cancer was not; it was aggressive. It was November 18, You never forget that date. Everything became serious, my thoughts wandered. What does this mean? I have very limited family history, how could I be diagnosed with cancer? Dr. Donna Moyers, the event emcee, spoke amidst musical performances by the Flat River Big Band and silent auction bidding to provide information on the hospitalʼs program to attendees. Carson Foundation Director Jaime Cassady said that she hopes the money raised through the event, which is approximately $10,000 annually, will be directed toward a new program aimed at providing mammograms for underinsured and uninsured women in Ionia, Montcalm, Clinton and Gratiot counties. The free event was held at St. Maryʼs Hall in Carson City, and was designed as a way to raise funds and awareness for local cancer programs. Itʼs a good cause and we love doing it, Cassady said. PINK WARRIOR Beverly Helms This journey does not come without a price. My grandmother used to always say, Every good thing worth having has a price. It is difficult to look at this journey and believe anything good can come out of it, but three years later, I see that it has. The cost is disappointment, grief, sorrow, helplessness, and sometimes hopelessness and a sense of violation. But on the other side is freedom, joy and peace. In my journey, my biggest obstacle was fear. Receiving a diagnosis of cancer is fear evoking in itself. After all, cancer is no respecter of persons, position, title or how much one is loved or needed. Cancer is a thief. It can rob us of joy, peace, comfort even our purpose. There is nothing it considers sacred. It doesn t just take the person diagnosed on one frightful journey; it drags everyone who loves or cares for them along. Bystanders feel hopeless and helpless. Cancer stops your life as you know it. Things change and it can affect every nook and cranny of your life: financial, personal, all of your relationships, the things that bring you enjoyment, employment, even when and what you eat and drink. The stress piles up and can feel unbearable and so very unreal. There is so much that cannot be addressed here, but I can draw from my experience and the positive things I did while going through my cancer journey. I chose not to live in fear. A co-worker gave me a sign for my desk that said, Cancer, you have picked the wrong woman! I said that out loud often. I chose to educate myself on my diagnosis and Returning first flight winners were Gary Kramer, Jamie Kramer, explored all of the options Dave Kemp and Jeff available, including the See GOLF Page B2 See HELMS Page B3 Ionia Sentinel-Standard PROGRESS 2014 Page 1 A PUBLICATION OF THE IONIA SENTINEL-STANDARD MARCH 2014 JANUARY FEBRUARY 2017 THIS PUBLICATION IS A PRODUCT OF THE IONIA SENTINEL-STANDARD Multi-Media Solutions We are the one source for your customized solution. pink Tools for the journey: Humor, music, research y name is Beth Trier- Best known as Mweiler. a 47-year-old mother, Paint it all Pink!
