2 Standard Grade Computing Studies - General Level Marking Instructions KU - Knowledge and understanding PS - Problem solving Structure of paper on paper The layout of this paper is modelled on the format of previous General level papers produced by SQA. There are six questions in total. The sixth question is selected by the centre from either Commercial Data or Automated according to which topic has been taught in preparation for the estimate examination. 3 1 This question deals with content from General Purpose and Computer A PE department is doing time trials for the 100m. Part of the spreadsheet is shown below. (See exam paper) PS (a) Cell D2 contains the average trial time for John Brown. Fill in the space below with the function and cell reference for this average calculation. = KU (b) The formula is replicated in column D. Explain what is meant by the term replicated? KU (c) After the trial times were entered the teacher wanted to ensure that they could not be deleted or altered by mistake. What is the name given to the feature that would prevent this? PS (d) All the times shown should have 2 decimal places. Explain clearly how this could be done using a package with which you are familiar. PS (e) In column E the teacher wants to show their best time over the two trials. 4 2 This question deals with content from General Purpose and Communications and Networks Below is part of a delivery schedule that a delivery courier can access using their PC. The courier uses this to plan his delivery route for the day. (See exam paper) PS (a) Three different field types have been used in this database. One is text. Name the other two. Date Numeric PS (b) The courier would like to find all the morning deliveries in postcode area AB11. Choose the correct words from the list below to complete the following paragraph. KU (f) (i) An individual has been accused of hacking. Explain what is meant by the term hacking. KU (ii) Do you always have a right to see personal data held about you? Explain your answer. 5 3 This question deals with content from Computer (a) High level languages are used to write programs. A translator program is needed to convert it into machine code. KU (i) Explain why a high level language must be converted into machine code. KU (ii) Why would a programmer choose to use a high level language rather than machine code to write a program? So that the computer can understand it. 1 mark It is English like, therefore easier for a human to understand It is easier to correct mistakes Any bullet point 1 mark - Max 1 mark KU (b) There are two types of files data files and program files. Explain what is meant by a data file and a program file. Data file is a file created or used within a program 1 mark Program file is a set of instructions that the computer follows 1 mark KU (c) Complete the sentences below using the correct words from the following list, stating how whole numbers and text are stored in memory. 1. binary digits 1 mark 2. 6 4 This question deals with content from General Purpose and Communications and Networks A company specialises in organising weddings. KU (a) They have information on a number of hotels stored as standard paragraphs. What is meant by a standard paragraph? a piece of text stored as a separate file which can be re-used (b) A document is to be sent to one set of clients confirming all the details for their big day. Unfortunately the name of the hotel Pitmedden Hotel has been typed as Pitmoodle Hotel several times in the document. It is possible to change the name throughout the document in one operation. PS (i) Name the feature which would enable this to be done. PS (ii) Describe how this feature could be used in this example. search and replace 1 mark Search for the word Pitmidden And replace with the word Pitmedden (c) The document is checked before being sent to the clients using a spelling checker. KU (i) Explain how a spell checker can be used to find and correct errors.
