1 Jb Specificatin Mbile Planetarium Officer, WINCHESTER Science Centre & Planetarium Winchester The Organisatin WINCHESTER Science Centre & Planetarium, lcated clse t Winchester and The M3 Mtrway in Hampshire, is a leading hands-n science and discvery centre dedicated t engaging, enthusing and inspiring peple abut science, technlgy, engineering and mathematics. The independent educatinal charity, which runs WINCHESTER Science Centre, was frmed in 1985 as a strategic initiative with lcal gvernment and businesses, t address the shrtage f yung peple entering technical careers at bth the reginal and natinal level. In 2008 WINCHESTER Science Centre pened the UK s largest capacity planetarium, a state f the art digital immersive theatre, which bsted schl and public visitr numbers and adds a new and exciting facility t the centre. A mbile planetarium was added t the ffer in Octber 2013 and is nw attracting regular schls bkings but with significant capacity fr grwth. Since pening its drs at the existing site in 2002 WINCHESTER Science Centre s visitr numbers have grwn by ver 100% and there is still ptential fr further grwth. Tday the ttal number f visitrs is ver 155,000 f whm ver 30,000 are students visiting in schl grup. The n-site planetarium receives 95,000 visits per annum. The Rle This is a pst wrking under the Head f Educatin & Planetarium as part f a team including tw Planetarium Officers. The majrity f the wrk will be related t administratin and delivery f Mbile Planetarium activities, with significant time initially spent supprting the Educatin and Planetarium teams in ther wrk. Yu will be respnsible fr maintaining the 6m mbile planetarium and its technlgies and fr delivering mbile planetarium activities t a variety f audiences (up t 45 peple per shw) at schls and ther venues acrss the suth f England. Yu will receive initial training and supprt frm in-huse staff with significant mbile dme experience, but be expected t becme the primary expert in this area with time. Bkings are managed by the Schls Bking Officer, but yu will liaise with teachers and ther custmers by and telephne as required t plan itineraries and make arrangements specific t their

2 venue, keeping excellent recrds s that anther staff member culd step in t cver in event f unexpected absence. Yu shuld expect t wrk alne ff-site delivering shws up t three days per week. Additinal days may be required during busy perids. These days will require early-mrning starts and there will als be ccasinal weekend and/r evening wrk. Initially, yu will trained t deliver ther ppular science-based shws and/r wrkshps (in-huse r as utreach) t supprt the Educatin Team and generate incme fr the charity, while the mbile planetarium bkings are increased. This rle requires that yu hld a driving licence. WSC will prvide a van. Driving time frm WSC will be cunted within yur wrking hurs. Driving expenses t be claimed at Science Centre s standard rate (currently 0.45/mile). The mbile planetarium requires secure strage and may nt be stred ff-site vernight withut prir agreement f the Head f Educatin & Planetarium. Yu will be respnsible fr the mbile planetarium and equipment, including basic maintenance and prcurement. Any damage r cncerns t be reprted t the Planetarium Manager. Yu will be required t safely lad/unlad and mve heavy equipment, usually withut help. Manual handling training and trlley assistance are available. Yu will set up (and pack dwn) the planetarium, taking great care t avid damage t fabric/equipment, including sweeping the flr if it is nt clean. All kit will be carefully re-packed at the end f each visit. Yu will arrive prmptly at each bking, cnducting yurself prfessinally at all times. Yu will liaise with the custmer ensuring that arrangements are clearly agreed, flexibly respnding t changing situatins as the custmer requires (within cnstraints f safety and quality). Yu will deliver bth film and live shws (including Q&A) t a wide variety f audiences, using a variety f sftware. During live shws yu will use the cmputer and speak at the same time. The style will be friendly and infrmal while maintaining cntrl f the audience s behaviur. Audiences are expected t be predminantly schl grups aged 4-13yr (including thse with special needs) but may als include nursery-age children, yuth grups, KS4+, the general public, adults, festivals r ther audiences. Yu will keep yurself up t date with the in-huse ffer t be able t answer questins frm mbile dme hirers abut ptential visits t the Science Centre site.

3 Yu will be required t hld a DBS certificate (arranged by the Science Centre) but will nt be expected t wrk alne with children r vulnerable adults. Yu will be respnsible fr the health and safety f the audience while in the vicinity f the planetarium. Yu will strictly fllw risk assessment cntrl measures; in the very unlikely situatin that a situatin arises where it is nt safe t prceed, yu will be respnsible fr making the decisin t stp. Yu will be prepared and able t flip the dme t evacuate in case f emergency. Yu will develp new shws r update lder shws as required, but this is nt anticipated t be a majr part f this rle. In any additinal available ffice time, yu will supprt the Planetarium Team and Educatin Team with tasks including general admin and running film shws in the giant n-site planetarium. Yu may als be invlved in events held at the Science Centre. As Winchester Science Centre has a small staff, yu will als be willing t help ther teams with any necessary tasks shuld these arise.

4 Jb Descriptin Pst Title: Mbile Planetarium Officer, Winchester Science Centre & Planetarium Salary: Circa 24,000 Wrking times: 37.5 hurs per week (average; the wrking day will vary) Wrking hurs will fit arund bkings and shuld be expected t include frequent early starts, it being usual t arrive at schls at abut 8am fr set-up. Hurs will be recrded and managed t give 37.5 hurs per week ver time. On days with full day bkings it will usually be necessary t wrk extended hurs. Lieu time must be managed carefully t avid interfering with delivery f future bkings, and t avid this building up significantly. Annual leave shuld be planned well in advance t avid leaving any bkings uncvered, as far as is practicable. Limited cver will be available frm the in-huse team. T minimise lss f incme, mst leave is expected t be taken within schl hliday perids. When wrking n-site at Winchester Science Centre, this will be within nrmal ffice hurs (with the exceptin f special events, requiring ccasinal evening r weekend wrk).
