19 Checklist Do you or your colleagues know the journal? Can you easily identify & contact the publisher? Is the journal clear re the peer review? Are articles indexed in services that you use? Is it clear what fees will be charged? Do you recognise the editorial board? Is the publisher a member of a recognised industry initiative (COPE,DOAJ,OASPA)?

20 3 top tips to avoid being prey If you haven t heard of the journal check bibliographic databases, Stop Predatory Journals or Beall s list Don t believe the journal s web site ask your colleagues and look at indicators of journal impact. Never respond to spam choose the journal yourself.
