2 CBD AND BUSINESS ENGAGEMENT During COP 10, parties requested that the Secretariat f the CBD engage with business t prvide supprt t help mainstream bidiversity/sustainability issues int business plans and actins

3 BUSINESS ENGAGEMENT: STRATEGY (I) Internatinal Plicy/Legislative Issues: Helping t set the internatinal agenda in terms f regulatry issues, such as: the eliminatin f perverse incentives; the restructuring f tax cdes and incentive structures t favur mre ecfriendly industries; the enacting f legislatin t prtect certain key areas r prvide fr sustainable use; setting f standards Encuragement f Market Pull: Sustainable public prcurement Can be required thrugh legislatin Crprate requirements f suppliers Awareness raising campaign (ie: the business case fr sustainability) cmbined with pressure frm cnsumers will help t create the necessary cnditins fr business t make these demands

4 BUSINESS ENGAGEMENT: STRATEGY (II) Facilitatin f Infrmatin Flw: Encurage cmpanies t share best-practices; Case studies and varius tls and mechanisms available t help cmpanies; Prblem is nt a dearth f infrmatin (althugh there are gaps) but t much infrmatin that cmpanies can have truble navigating; Streamlining the infrmatin and ensuring that cmpanies knw where t g can help t alleviate this prblem and allw fr greater uptake Prvisin f Infrmatin and Services t Cmpanies: Many cmpanies lack knwledge, time and resurces t take advantage f the infrmatin and tls available Civil sciety rganizatins, cnsultants and/r lcal authrities may be able t help thrugh direct training, resurce augmentatin r ther services Want t create a level-playing field, but nt smething that is beynd the means f small business.

5 BUSINESS ENGAGEMENT: IMPLEMENTATION GLOBAL PLATFORM FOR BUSINESS AND BIODIVERSITY WEBSITE Platfrm fr businesses t get infrmatin t assist in mainstreaming bidiversity and raise awareness. Case studies, tls/mechanisms, research, lists f events, etc Platfrm where businesses can ask questins and exchange ideas Capacity t hst webinars and ask the expert events Phase 1 launched in early June 2011 ( Phase 2 launched in December 2011

6 BUSINESS ENGAGEMENT: IMPLEMENTATION ENHANCED OUTREACH TO BUSINESS The Secretariat is cntacting key business partners in a wide variety f sectrs t encurage them t adpt prvisins f the Cnventin and share their experiences Thrugh the website, newsletters, wrkshps and ther events, the Secretariat hpes t reach ther businesses (especially SMEs) further dwn the supply chain Will engage leading cmpanies glbally t assist in this endeavr Related t this, the Secretariat is als lking at the issue f Green Public Prcurement as a way f encuraging further demand fr ec-friendly prducts

9 BUSINESS ENGAGEMENT: IMPLEMENTATION GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP FOR BUSINESS AND BIODIVERSITY Stemming frm decisin X/21/1d and X/21/3a The Glbal Partnership links tgether the natinal and reginal initiatives with CBD Secretariat as the Glbal Fcal pint Partnership will encurage synergies and sharing f best practices amngst the natinal and reginal initiatives Varius wrking grups and virtual meetings f the Partnership First Meeting f the Partnership in Tky (December 2011) Secnd Meeting scheduled during COP 11 in Hyderabad, India (Octber 2012)

10 Targeting Leveraging Necessary t ensure that we reach a range f cmpanies acrss all sectrs; Large champins can help set the example; Imprtant t target SMEs and Supply Chains As Partnership develps, limited number f players and resurces; Imprtant t ensure that ideas and best practices shared acrss Partnership; Encurage engagement in cmmn prjects Synergizing BUSINESS ENGAGEMENT: IMPLEMENTATION GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP FOR BUSINESS AND BIODIVERSITY While each cuntry has its wn needs, cnsistent messaging glbally is imprtant; Cmmn appraches can allw fr greater impact and credibility; Particularly imprtant fr multinatinals, wh will want t ensure supply chain in different cuntries all n the same page; Wrk clsely with established glbal NGOs and IGOs t ensure maximum penetratin t cmpanies at reginal and natinal levels

11 BUSINESS ENGAGEMENT: IMPLEMENTATION SYNERGIES WITH OTHER CONVENTIONS Bidiversity issues can smetimes be perceived as cmpeting with ther envirnmental cncerns The Business Unit f the SCBD is wrking with a variety f partners including the ther Ri Cnventins Ri Cnventins Pavilin features business day (Ri+20 June 18) Pavilin is nw present at all COP meetings Psitive actins in ne area can have psitive effects in thers

12 TOWARDS COP 11 The next COP will take place in Hyderabad in Octber 2012 The Secretariat is in the prcess f planning a number f business events arund COP including: High level meetings between business leaders and gvernment fficials A green business exhibitin Meeting f the Natinal Business and Bidiversity Cuncils COPs are very imprtant in the life f the Cnventin, and businesses frm arund the wrld are strngly encuraged t participate As ur planning cntinues, we will pst updates n the Glbal Platfrm Website
