1 Assciate Dean + Leadership Team Meeting Ntes January 19, 2018 Discussin regarding Buve's "Prir Missin and Visin" Please share yur reflectins n the Buve Missin and Visin- is this smething that yu've used in yur day as leaders? Are we true t it? Are there places where we are falling shrt? Smething missing- IPE healthcare leaders speaks t the healthcare preparatin side f the cllege. I think we need t wrk n that and expand that Next generatin: I have a lt f peple in their 40's and 50's in my classrm. What abut the "here and nw"? Preparing fr wrk this year I see it as inspiring the wrk as a glbal cmmunity With IPE- Hw are we training ur students? Are we training them "interprfessinally"? Or are we training them t wrk as interprfessinal leaders? What are we ding t train them "as leaders"? Bth the missin and visin read very clinical. It desn't resnate with the "academic" r "educatin" side because ur graduates are als entering fields ther than specifically healthcare prviders. It shuld reflect all f ur graduates Hw can we encmpass the artificial intelligence and rise f technlgy? It reads quite static. It shuld relate in a brad manner, nt just healthcare The wrd "create" sunds like we're building a rbt. It desn't really ring true t what we d The wrd chice culd be mre strng and active "We embrace" as ppsed t "We seek t embrace" "Disseminating new knwledge" abut things that are nn health and healthcare. Visin- add a frward lking cmpnent- t thrive in an increasingly technlgical landscape. Ex. T "adapt" t the changing landscape. Als "resilience". What abut thse wrking n basic science? Peripherally related t health care, but nt fcusing n it? Is there anyne here that isn't wrking in health? Will there be transparency after this meeting? Yes. 2 We aligned these with what the university's plan had created. These are timeless values. Are there any thers that culd be added withut clutter r diluting? Engagement- wh d we engage with? Hw d we engage with them? Grups have questined whether we are engaging with urban cmmunities. Netwrks: This seems t relate t the NU 2025 What is "ppulatin health"? Is it "epi"? What is excellence? Hw d we define it? Hw are we excellent? What abut "individual health"? Many f us are preparing clinicians t take care f individuals These have t align with earlier strategic research initiatives. We have t be cnsistent Hw des this align with ur "clinical" and "IP pprtunities" that are specific t ur ppulatin? Experiential Opprtunities are nt really captured in the values but stressed in the 2025 plan Lk at the "Essence f Nrtheastern" Are these themes aligned with Buve? Shuld anther categry be an aspect we aspire t? This wuld help us recruit new faculty t help create this We dn't have a NU academic medical center. One aspiratin culd be t enhance and build n ur relatinships with these facilities. An area f excellence is ur "Plicy and Practice" Where d we excel cncerning this Strategic Plan as ppsed t the last Strategic Plan? Did we evaluate the last strategic plan? Gal 1 we need t d a lt in IPE Diversity f faculty we need t d a lt f wrk What is meant by "Glbal" cllege? What des it mean t be glbal? Des it mean we bring internatinal students? Des it mean we send ur students internatinally? There is a survey getting ready t g ut t cllect the metrics f this frm a variety f perspectives Strive t make the next set f gals specific and measurable. We need t chart where we are alng the way Instead f repackaging gals every 5-6 years, lets track ur prgress Is anything missing? Our missin and visin- includes impacting the envirnment. D we want t be the university wh graduates the next batch f researchers wh g n t becme X Y Z? Innvatin and entrepreneurship are buzzwrds that are nt mentined. These wrds were nt n the radar back in 2012

We shuld scrap "t becme" Increasing ur cmmunity engagement culd imprve ur messaging Wrding- culd be strnger. We want t be "the epitme f diversity" Discussin arund Strategic Plan Framewrk Innvatin is a buzzwrd. Glbal als. What des that mean? What d these guiding principles mean fr Buve? What might be missing? Academic excellence vs. Clinical excellence. Many f us are preparing clinicians. I fell that needs t have a place. Innvatin frm a pedaggical and curricular perspective. Where d we want t have students have cmpetence? Taking a changing set f cmpetencies that students are required t meet when they graduate and designing new educatinal tls t get them there Are guiding principles and values the same r different? I think we shuld preserve the values I see the Guiding Principles as different than Values Academic excellence shuld always be tp and centered Innvatin means t teach students t think utside f the bx and nt think incrementally Innvatin means technlgy and lking at hw we can innvate health care Innvatin is applied creativity. Cming up with new slutins t prblems Educating the students Innvatin is preparing fr what hasn't happened yet In 5 years, many things will be ut f date Innvatin- we as an educatinal system have nt changed in hundreds f years. The university system has nt changed with its prcess and pririty and revenue Is this where we shuld cntinue t g in the future? Are there different ways t measure academic prgress twards degree paths Impactful research- what des this mean? There are many ways t cnsider ur research impactful Similar with interdisciplinary appraches. It culd mean different things in different cntext We all need t agree n which mdel we shuld apply t each f these Guiding Principals Nt t cnfuse the Values with the Guiding Prinicpals Values in the previus dcument were Principals. These principals are mre like Guiding Practices

4 Innvatin- I dn't see it as innvatin educatin because that is implied in Academic Excellence. Innvatin isn't Impactful Research Innvatin is inventin. Entrepreneurship. Bringing things t market fr the public gd Innvatin is already packaged in the ther Guiding Principles, s the nly cntext that is left ut is Entrepreneurship Innvatin- implies an implicit cmparisn t ding smething differently than what is already the gld standard Hw are we ging t back up r justify ur innvatin in whatever area? Innvatin- is being pen t steering ff the status qu Academic Excellence- we all claim that every prgram is excellent, but in reality, nt s much Even these Guiding Principals shuld be quantifiable and data driven Shuld we have t use all six Guiding Principles in ur daily academic life? D we need every single class t be experiential? N These Guiding Principles culd be simplified by weaving in the HOW (specifically) These Principals are mre like a cmplicating Vann diagram. They are nt islated We are cmmitted t creating a diverse wrkfrce I dn't see that up there In HS there is a cntentin with Academic Excellence as being defined abve and ur wn effrts t diversify ur wrkfrce Hw are we ging t priritize hw we are ging t pick ur battles Glbal and Diversity are ften in cnflict with each ther I think f underrepresented flks, nt Glbal Des a fcus n being Glbal take away frm ur effrts t invest in the surrunding cmmunity? 5 Schlarly activities culd be nntraditinal (nndidactic ex. Writing a textbk that crsses int different areas) Financial Stability and Reputatin These are byprducts and enablers They d need t be here. These things are utcmes f a strng cllege, but nt the gals in and f themselves Is this a pillar that has t be elevated? The cnversatin shuld be "What is the value f educatin"? And the byprduct is revenue I'm wrried whenever dllars drive the decisins. We miss ding what is best fr the students smetimes Operatins have t be a part f the mix. If yu keep financial stability, then yu shuld keep excellence in Student Services Fcus Areas- these culd be any schl's fcus areas Where is the mentin t clinicians? Our clinical wrk utside f academics is nt mentined as a pririty What abut the stake hlders? The buy ins? What abut all the places where we teach ur students?
