3 Activity 1 Wants vs Needs 20 minutes 1) Start this first activity with introductions. Tell the girls your name and where you work. Put your name on a name tag. Let each girl introduce herself and put her name on a name tag. 2) Tell the girls to turn to page 3 in their workbooks (sample copy is provided in the back of this booklet). Explain that throughout the day, there will be answers and important points to listen for in order to complete the workbook. The girls can use this workbook to help them remember what they learn today. 3) Tell the girls The first topic we ll talk about today will be wants and needs. Ask the group: What is a WANT? What is a NEED? Remember to tell them that there is no right or wrong answer! Define a want and a need for them they should write this on page 3 of their workbooks. Want something you would like to have Need something necessary for survival 3) Tell the girls to turn pages 4 and 5 in their workbook. Have the girls each pick one object from pages 4 or 5. Ask each girl if she thinks that s a want or a need. Ask her why she thinks that. Ask: Does anyone from the group disagree? Ask: Could this be a want and a need? Have the girls record the objects on their Wants/Needs/Both sheet, page 6.

4 4) Ask the girls: If you had to pay for these items, what would be the top three items on your priority list? The top three can be from the want or need list. The three top priorities will be on page 6 in their workbooks. Ask each girl why she chose those top three things. Tell the girls: Whether it s a want or a need, you need money to buy it! Some people put their money in a piggy bank. Ask the girls - Why do you think people do this? Tell the girls to turn to the Draw a Piggy Bank on page 7 in their workbooks. Each girl has 5 minutes to draw a piggy bank that would encourage someone to put their money in it. Pencils should have been provided by the troop leader. Ask each girl why did you design it like you did? Why would your design make someone more likely to put their money in?

5 Activity 2 Smart Shopping 20 minutes 1) Have the girls turn to page 8 in their workbooks. 2) Ask - What does it mean to be consumer savvy? Give the girls the definition of consumer savvy. Consumer savvy means you are a smart buyer who knows how to shop for a good deal. This will be on page 8 of their workbooks. 3) Ask the girls - Where can you find advertisements? Give examples they may have missed: TV, newspaper, magazines, the Internet, on the radio, billboards, on the side of the bus. Have them write this in their workbooks. Ask - What is the goal of an ad? Define the goal of an ad this will be on page 8. The goal of an ad is to get you to buy something you probably don t need. Ask the girls - What do you think advertisers put in their ads to make you interested in the product they are selling? Examples: actors/actresses and singers from show popular with your age group, cartoon characters, kids your age, music you like. Ask the girls if you were making a magazine ad to sell Girl Scout Cookies to each other, what would you put in it? 4) Ask the girls - What does it mean to comparison shop? Define comparison shopping this will be on page 8. Comparison shopping to shop at more than one place to compare the price of a product Ask - Why do you think people comparison shop? What are the benefits? 5) Tell the girls to turn to pages 9 and 10 in their workbooks. Tell each girl to choose one product in one of the circulars they might like to buy.

6 Have them find the price of the item at this store. Is there any fine print under the ad? What does it say? Is there a sale deadline? Do you have to buy more than one to get the sale price? Do you have to use your Store Brand card to get the price? Ask the girls - Where else can they comparison shop for the product they chose from the circular? How can they do this without physically going to every store? Some examples: internet search, calling the store, buying the Sunday newspaper to find circulars from other stores Tell the girls to turn to page 11. Explain that they each have $20 to spend. Would they have enough money to buy the item they wanted? Ask the girls- Are you buying a want or a need?

7 Activity 3 Setting Savings Goals 20 minutes This activity will be split into 2 sections the first lasting 15 minutes. For the final 5 minutes, the girls will be filling out the Sharing sheet. 1) Have each of the girls name something they d like to buy in the future. This would be something they pay for, not something they will ask for a birthday or holiday. If they are having trouble choosing an item, go back to the ad they had out earlier. Have them turn to page 12 in the workbook. Have them fill in the Goal line what they would like to buy. 2) Ask the Girls - How much does your goal cost? There s a list of some items with corresponding prices immediately following this activity in this instructors manual. If they are unsure, help them estimate a cost. Have them fill in the Amount Needed to Reach Goal line. Ask them - How can you find out the price if you are unsure? Have them list three places they could look in order to comparison shop on the I can comparison shop for this here: line. 3) Ask the girls What is income? Define income this is on page 13 of their workbook. Income money received over a period of time. Let them know that you may have a weekly income, a monthly income, a yearly income, etc. 4) Ask the group how they earn money. Examples may be babysitting, birthday money, an allowance. Have them fill in the first 3 lines under My Income on their worksheet. Remind them that it s okay to have $0 on those lines.

8 5) Ask the girls - Do you have money saved? They can estimate if they re not sure. Remind them that it s okay to have nothing saved. Have them put their savings amount on the Savings line. Add the Weekly Income and Savings lines. 6) Ask the girls Do you have enough money to reach your goal? Subtract the Weekly Income and Savings TOTAL from their goal. Have the girls put this amount in the I need to reach my Goal line. 7) Ask the girls - How else can you earn money? Have them list some other activities they can do to earn money. After they list a few, add some more ideas: dog walking, car washing, a lemonade stand, gardening, helping a neighbor, etc. Remind them to get their parents permission before doing any of these activities. This portion of Activity 3 is done. Please turn to the Sharing sheet in your manual.

9 Sample Price List This may help the girls estimate what their goal will cost. 10 Sharing Exercise Have the girls fill out this page in their workbook (page 14). When everyone is finished, ask for volunteers to share their answers. A scout from each group can deliver the answers. 1) Tell everyone what you would put in a magazine ad to sell Girl Scout cookies. 2) Earning money is hard work! What are some of the ideas you came up with to earn money? 3) Your volunteer is a CPA. Tell the group what CPA stands for.
